I bet that most of you – the audiences of Breathe Quality, are looking for Winix is because of the today Winix HR900. Of course, this Korean brand has a strong foundation and development in American air purifier market, since 2004. The Winix HR900 is also one of the best air purifiers reviewing from many other websites (and us, too) in the previous years. So, even after the release of the new Winix HR1000, what is the reason to buy this air purifier? Let’s find out in the Winix HR900 Review.

Winix HR900 Price

The Winix HR900 is the cheaper alternative to the Winix HR950 and Winix HR1000, of course, the name tells us everything. However, you should know that the Winix HR900 is the only one of the three Ultimate Pet Series to have the double pre-filtration. This air purifier trades away advanced features like the anti-microbial layer, and moreover, the Smart Wi-Fi function to knock the price down to a level budget buyers will be more comfortable with.

And yes, it still has stunning value and is also one of the best air purifiers in the class of $300-ish. Funny, others that can compete with the Winix HR900 are nothing but its brothers, the Winix P450 and Winix U450. Both the latter models feature a much higher CADR rating, allowing them clean your room much quicker.

This Winix HR900 price was $349, but is has dropped to a point you can easily buy, as low as $219 from Breathe Quality’s deal. Actually, most Winix air purifiers can be found with much lower price than the official price from Winix website, so you should always check deal from Breathe Quality first.

But what about others? Some of them are great in this price range, for example the Airmega 230, Medify MA-40 and Airmega 250, as they have the modern smart functions, just like the new Winix AM90 can do. The Levoit LV-H133 is powerful and more popular than the Winix HR900, thanks to its very loyal community. If you can afford more, you can select between the Levoit Core 600S, GermGuardian AC9400W and Sharp FP-A80UW. They have more fan power than our today unit, as well as some new cool air filtration technologies.

Winix HR900 Design and Size

The first generation of new Ultimate Pet air purifier marks the first time Winix has used this design concept in this series. Well, aside from the front panel, which has been filled with perforated grill and lately removed from the Winix HR950.

And yes, it is the innovative design from this company, which allows your air purifier to pull in as much polluted air possible from not only the front, but also the sides and the bottom. It is also featured on other series like the Winix U300 or Winix U450, but only the Winix HR900 makes use of the perforated grill. To be fair, the perforated grill is what makes the Winix C535, and later, the Winix C555 the most successful air purifiers in Korean market.

The Winix HR900 is 23.6 inches in height, a similar height for nearly every air purifier in low-range segment of this brand. It keeps the air purifier steady and firm enough to hold on the ground.

Other than that, you have the same traditional bottom-to-top airflow concept from this Winix HR900, which runs through the air intake grill 360° around the front plate to the top air outlet grill. This air purifier is the old device at the moment, and it won’t have the automatic opening function for air outlet like the Winix HR950 and Winix HR1000.

There are a few important elements that make the plastic body seem quite classy. First the Winix HR900 is white, and the white color is still the best option for the plastic body. And the side air grill is covered with rubber instead of just being plain like in the cheap ones. It is also increasing the efficiency of the Winix HR900 against pet hair and fur.

About the top control panel, for who are familiar with the Winix HR950, it is exactly the same control panel. If you don’t know, I will talk about it more in the Addition features section later.

Winix HR900 Filters

One thing that you can find in all Winix air purifiers is the number of stages in the air cleaning system. Normally, to decide the performance of an air purifier, we should look at how many air filters and what air filter types are used. The Winix HR900 uses 5-stage air cleaning system, but it is quite different from the one featured in the flagship Winix HR1000.

1. Ultimate Pet Pre-filter – The first line of defense which can trap the largest particles like pet hair, fur and even pet dander. For optimal performance, it is recommended to change this filter once every month.
2. Pre-filter – Then the polluted air will pass the fine mesh pre-filter, which is washable and can extend the lifetime of remaining filters by removing the large objects of pollutants.
3. Activated Carbon filter – The Activated Carbon filter is able to deal with the pet odor by adsorbing it. This air filter can also deal with the chemicals and VOCs.
4. True HEPA filter – The True HEPA Filter that captures 99.97% of down to 0.3 microns allergens, virus particles, pollen, mold and fungi particles.
5. Winix PlasmaWave – This technology is one kind of ionizer, which can further reduce the amount of pollutants. Can be switched on/off.

In low to mid-range segment, we can only find the Winix HR900 to have the double pre-filtration. However, unlike the premium air purifiers like the Austin Air HealthMate or Rabbit Air MinusA2, the Ultimate Pet pre-filter is just like a paper filter, to capture the large dust and pet hair. This pre-filter can easily be broken, and needs to be replaced regularly.

Don’t forget that the signature air filtration system of Winix offers the combination of True HEPA filter and PlasmaWave Technology to not only trap the contaminants, but create the hydroxyls to break the contaminants into water molecule. So to say, the Winix HR900 is one great air purifier for the price.

To test the performance of the Winix HR900, I still used the large room of 200 square feet, and locked the Winix HR900 running for 1 hour against many types of pollutants. I added the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0, Oransi OV200 and Levoit LV-H133 to test the performance of this air purifier. As the result, the Winix HR900 can’t clean as quick as the Winix HR1000 and Levoit LV-H133, but the efficiency is still very high, up to 99.92% for trapping any particles down to 0.3 microns. The Oransi OV200 is the lowest performance of all, with only 99.5%.

Just like the successors, the Winix HR900 uses the filter T, costing you around $99 for annual filter replacement. Of course, it is higher than others in the same price range, like Levoit LV-H133 is only $84, or Alen BreatheSmart 45i with only $59.

Winix HR900 Room Coverage

With the suggested room size for only 300 square feet, we can predict the Winix HR900 to have much lower fan power than the Winix HR1000.

The ACH of Winix HR900 is 4X. The Winix HR900 is still great at cleaning your room every 15 minutes.

The CADR of Winix HR900 is 200 Dust/ 194 Smoke/ 220 Pollen (cfm). The CADR rating of this air purifier is capable for the room coverage of 300 square feet, but it is still a bit lower than a $200 Coway AP-1512HH.

Winix HR900 Sound

The internals of the Winix HR900 looks much like the mixture of the Winix P300 and Winix HR950, so we can expect a very silent operation running in its vein. Perhaps the section is also one of the strongest advantages of Winix, as it can keep all air purifiers around the threshold of 26 decibels (dB), a noise level of a whisper.

So to say, the Winix HR900 can handle the noise far better than even the Alen BreatheSmart 45i or Levoit LV-H134.

Winix HR900 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.

In contrast with the silent operation, the power consumption is always the disadvantage of this Korean brand. For a portable home air purifier like the Winix HR900, the power consumption of 56 watts is quite higher than the Alen BreatheSmart 45i (only 38 watts) and Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 (as low as 5 watts). Still, the Winix HR900 has been certified by Energy Star for being energy efficient.

For 8 hours of using per day, the Winix HR900 would cost you around $20 per year.

Winix HR900 Additional Features

This could easily be the most important area to cover in any air purifiers of Winix, because whatever the air purifier you are going to use, it will have the Smart Sensor. Talking about the Smart Sensor, this is the key factor to buy one air purifier. It responds to any change in indoor air quality, and reports via the light notification on the front. With 3 different colors, you always know the quality of your air.

Moreover, by activating the Auto Mode, you can utilize the Smart Sensor to next level. The Winix HR900 can automatically adjust the fan speed to meet the demand of your indoor air, meaning it will run on Turbo setting if the air quality is poor, and reduce whenever it is fine again.

The Winix HR900 still has the Sleep mode to be selected specially in the bedroom, which switch to low fan speed and disable the light notification. The light can also be turned off automatically while this air purifier is in Auto Mode, as the Winix HR900 packs a light sensor to detect the amount of ambient light in your room.

Finally, just like the Winix HR950, you will have the child lock and timer functions in this Winix HR900.
