The Coway Airmega 230 and its twin brother, the Airmega 240, are a big update on their predecessors and create a new path for modern Coway Airmega air purifiers in the U.S. market. The company has done everything to stay high in the competition, where it can’t just rely on the classic design of the Coway AP-1512HH. So far, let’s check out our trusted Coway Airmega 230 Review.
In Breathe Quality, we have reviewed all air purifiers under these sections. Also, we guarantee that:
- We provide honest reviews (both pros and cons) so that everyone can make the best decisions.
- We do not (and never) exaggerate one product just to let you click the links and buy that product blindly.
- Good-looking design
- Better fan power
- Good air sensor
- Top-class 3-year warranty
- Still only has dust sensor
- Lacks smart features
Coway has made air purifiers for more than 30 years, and the popularity of this company is top-notch in the Asian market. In the U.S. market, however, the company lacks serious competition in the mid-range segment, which it’s going to fix with the new series, starting with the air purifier that I tested in this Coway Airmega 230 Review.
Other Coway’s Air Purifier Reviews:
Coway AIRMEGA 230 Price
Never has Coway’s rivalry with other U.S. manufacturers like Levoit and Bissell been so pronounced: the same year the latter companies declare the flagship devices with better design, Coway comes along and does everything the same, starting with the first Airmega 150.
You can think of the Airmega 230 as the direct upgrade of the Airmega 150, with a bigger size, bigger air filters, and a more powerful fan. When I wrote this Airmega 230 review, it wasn’t the latest air purifier from the company, though the Airmega 250S needs more time for revision.
You can buy the Airmega 230 for $269 for both color options. This is also the same price for the Airmega 240, which is definitely the same air purifier as the Airmega 230. For context, the Airmega 230’s initial price does match the Coway AP-1512HHS at the moment, but it ranks a bit lower.
Moreover, the Airmega 230 is in the same price range as the Blue Pure 311 Auto, Levoit Core 600S, Winix 9800 and Airthereal AGH550. That’s stiff competition, with all of them being in our recommendation for the best air purifier.
So, what are the Airmega 230’s advantages over the competition? Perhaps an extra 1-year warranty is more than what Levoit and Blueair can offer. Or the variety of color options for both the 230 and 240 models. I don’t know, because my No. 1 pick is always the Levoit Core 600S.

Coway AIRMEGA 230 Design and Size
The Airmega 230 is the evolution of the Airmega 150, just like the Airmega 240 is the evolution of the Airmega 160 (sorry, I’m a fan of the new Pokemon Violet and Scarlet). But it doesn’t have anything different, despite the size, so the past review can easily cover this section.
The Airmega 230 isn’t the company’s biggest model, but this is the biggest one in the latest released products, with dimensions of 22.8 x 16.7 x 8.3 in. At 20.5 lbs, the Airmega 230 is sturdy enough, though you shouldn’t move it very much because there are no handles.
The Airmega 230 has combined the air filter into one, making air filter installation much easier. It also prevents the dusty mess when cleaning the air filter, thanks to the easy-to-remove pre-filter, which has been the core design since the Airmega 150. The new air filter helps increase space for the bigger fan, resulting in higher fan power.
I really like the new front air outlet of the new Airmega 230, which covers the whole front of the air purifier. It maximizes the efficiency of the fan power and has a better aesthetic. If the smaller Airmega 150 can be mistaken with the Winix AM90 and AM80, the new Airmega 230 is very different.
However, it only provides two different color options: Sage Green and Dove White. Perhaps the pink option is the one with the lowest sales.
The new air outlet makes the work of the air sensor much more accurate. The Airmega 230 doesn’t have issues with the false reading like the Compact 150, which is also the problem with many other air purifiers on the market.
Well, the same bottom-to-top airflow system is how the Airmega 230 operates. It doesn’t have the 360° air outlet, but this design can make placing the air purifier easier. On top of the Airmega 230, the control panel has more buttons as the device has more additional features than its predecessor.

Coway AIRMEGA 230 Filters
By checking the amount of air filters and the types of air filters used, we can guess a part of an air purifier’s performance of cleaning indoor air. The Airmega 230 features a very traditional air filtration system with two stages.
- Pre-filter – An extractor-type washable pre-filter will help you capture the large particles of contaminants, such as pet hair, human hair, and mold. It is easy to remove, so you can maintain your unit easily. Slide out, rinse, and hang to dry.
- Max2 filter – Combining both an Activated Carbon filter and a True HEPA filter, this filter can capture up to 99.97% of airborne particles smaller than 0.3 microns. The HEPA filter adds antimicrobial treatment to prevent mold, bacteria, and viruses.
Finally, Coway has managed to bring down the flagship’s air filtration system from the Airmega 400S into a more budget-conscious device like the Airmega 230. More and more air purifier users appreciate the all-in-one air filter, which is simple to replace and maintain. Its marketing name is HyperCaptive filtration, which is not really a good name. Still, A for effort.
The performance of the Airmega 230 is exceptional, as it holds its own against the Blue Pure 211+, which is a very powerful air purifier. It managed to capture 99.95% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns in our test, which was better than the GermGuardian AC5109W, Filtrete FAP-ST02 and Bissell air320.
However, the new Max2 air filter of the Airmega 230 costs more than even the Coway AP-1512HHS in the same price range, at $84 for only 1 year before it needs replacing. One more reason for its lower ranking with the stablemate.

Coway AIRMEGA 230 Room Coverage
The Airmega 230 is packed with good air filters, so it only needs good room coverage to be competitive in this price range. And it is. The Airmega 230 has a room coverage of 488 square feet, according to the Energy Star.
The ACH of Coway Airmega 230 is 4X. With this air changes per hour rating, the Airmega 230 can clean your room every 15 minutes.

Coway AIRMEGA 230 Sound
You can also take advantage of using a Coway Airmega air purifier with quiet operation, which trims the noise level to as low as 21 decibels (dB). It is, in fact, even lower than the Airmega 150, and you won’t notice it running.
The noise level at the highest speed is just 51 decibels, so it’s not really loud, and it could be one of the best air purifiers for bedroom in our next revision.

Coway AIRMEGA 230 Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifiers must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criterion for reviewing how much energy this air purifier will consume.
The Airmega 230 is another Energy Star air purifier from Coway. This means that it uses very little energy. The power consumption of this Airmega 230 is only 60 watts.
If you’re going to use the Coway Airmega 230 for 8 hours per day, you only need to pay $22 per year.

Coway AIRMEGA 230 Additional Features
The Airmega 230 is at the same level as the Coway AP-1512HHS, but it doesn’t include a Wi-Fi capability feature. It does, however, feature the air sensor from the first Coway AP-1512HH, which changes the fan speed according to the air quality thanks to the dust air sensor. Real-time monitoring keeps you informed of the status of your air quality, and you can also turn off the light if you need to sleep.
You can adjust the air sensor sensitivity up to 3 levels. The higher the value, the more active its air sensor will be in responding to changes in the air quality index. Coway adds the Timer feature to the Airmega 230, selecting between 1, 4, or 8 hours.
Finally, we have LED indicators for filter replacement. This feature will keep reminding you when to change the filter for optimal performance.
Coway AIRMEGA 230 Customer Service
As one of the top electronic brands in Korea, Coway is somehow as huge as Samsung. This brand not only carries out clean innovations for the customers, but Coway also delivers its direction as Coway Trust. That’s why Coway always places a strong focus on its customers and community. With global subsidiaries and regional dealerships that serve over 60 countries, you should believe in the customer service of the company.
Moreover, you can contact Coway’s customer service via phone at 800-285-0982 or via email at email@example.com. Normally, customer service will try to contact you within 24 hours.
All air purifiers made by Coway have their motor and electronic parts warranted for 3 years, while other internals are warranted for 1 year.
Coway Airmega 230 is a product headed in the right direction, with the caveat that it doesn’t have as many features as the older Coway AP-1512HHS. However, its new design concept is great, and we could expect the Airmega 230 to appear on our list in the near future.
