The Coway AP-1512HHS (or Airmega AP-1519P) is a slight upgrade that’s still a solid air purifier. Compared to the famous Coway AP-1512HH, the Activated Carbon filter of the Coway AP-1512HHS is more powerful, and it has all the smart features of an Airmega model (the name of Coway’s premium lineup). These are all just tweaks, though, so we need a complete Coway AP-1512HHS Review to see if we should pay more for the newer device or not.

Update: We have a new air purifier in the name of the Coway Airmega Mighty 2, which is the more efficient form of the today Coway AP-1512HHS. However, we believe the newer Coway Airmega 350 is a better value for the price.

Adding a smart air purifier version seems to be favored more and more in the low-range segment. Many big air purifier brands are adding smart features to their most popular budget products to give everyone with a tight budget a taste of high-end technology.

The Coway AP-1512HHS is such a device, bringing all the smart features from the luxury Airmega lineup, like the Airmega 300S or Airmega 400S, to the most popular Coway AP-1512HH. If you are looking for the Airmega AP-1519P, that is exactly our today’s unit. Finally, the Airmega air purifier we want to have (not the Airmega 200M, without any upgrades from the original one).

It seems the Airmega 250S is the next-gen air purifier from the South Korean brand to continue the success of the Coway AP-1512HHS.

It looks quite identical to the original model, and you might think that not a lot has changed – but it’s inside where the differences lie.

In terms of the price, the good (ish) news is that it hasn’t risen too much from the incredibly successful AP-1512HH, with the Coway AP-1512HHS coming in at $299 at launch.

The alternatives to this air purifier should be the smart versions from big competitors of the original one, like the Honeywell HPA8350, Winix 9800 and Winix C909. The Levoit Core 600S are the best you can get for the money, but they are also the most expensive. Well, the latest Coway AP-1512HHS is still the most affordable air purifier to get, so do you find it more interesting?

Coway AP-1512HHS Design and Size

First impressions: the Coway AP-1512HHS has improved color selection, at least in my opinion. With less white and more pink, the air purifier brings an alternative look to Coway’s device. It feels closer to rose gold than anything else, but there’s a definite coffee tinge to the coloring that I’m not wholly enamored with.

Beyond that, the design of the Coway AP-1512HHS is familiar because it is exactly the same as the old Coway AP-1512HH. The same shape, frame, and 16.8 x 18.3 x 9.6-inch footprint are used, and the temptation to copy and paste the previous year’s words here is high.

I will persevere though, as it’s only fair to discuss what works on this newer Coway AP-1512HHS and why, in its own right, it’s still one of the best-designed air purifiers on the market right now. It is truly the iconic design of this #1 Korean air purifier company.

And yes, the bottom-to-top airflow system concept is used here, with the air intake behind the signature iPod-like front plate of the Coway AP-1512HHS. I was mightily impressed with the beauty of the air purifier blending with my home’s decor.

The number of buttons on the top control panel is a bit different, but they are still the classic buttons that I prefer to touch and feel. As you can see, simplicity is simply the best.

The Coway AP-1512HHS weighs only 12.3 lbs, just like its predecessor, so you can easily move it from room to room.

Coway AP-1512HHS Filters

I’ve described the air filtration system of the Coway AP-1512HH as “close to perfection”. The Coway AP-1512HHS welcomes some new changes, but one thing remains: the high efficiency of capturing airborne allergens. Let’s take a look at the 3-stage air-cleaning system of this air purifier.

1. Pre-filter – A washable pre-filter will help you capture the large particles of contaminants, such as pet hair, human hair, and mold. Keep in mind that this pre-filter is washable and therefore permanent.
2. Activated Carbon filter – This improved honeycomb carbon filter works its best to deodorize and trap harmful gases to keep your place fresh and odor-free. It reduces more than 90% of volatile organic compounds and fumes such as NH3 and CH₃CHO.
3. True HEPA filter – The high-performance composite True HEPA filter captures 99.97% of allergens, virus particles, pollen, mold, and fungi down to 0.3 microns.

Though it is built on the core of an old True HEPA filter, the HEPA filter made by Coway is still one of the most powerful filters you can get in the world. It is high-quality and exceptional, dealing with all types of airborne allergens, virus particles, pollen, mold, and fungi particles as small as 0.3 microns.

The Coway AP-1512HHS uses an improved honeycomb activated carbon filter, which is widely used in the Airmega product line and is more efficient at trapping odors and chemicals. In real use, I can’t say I noticed things looking exceptional—that’s not to say that the more advanced carbon filter isn’t impressive, but the current carbon filter from Coway is overall too good.

It also doesn’t have the vital ionizer feature, so the Coway AP-1512HHS is 100% ozone-free. Because recent air purifiers are more and more getting rid of this feature, I’m not surprised of this removal by Coway. Thus, this air purifier is certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for ozone emission safety.

With not many changes in the internal power but a higher price tag, the Coway AP-1512HHS needs to take a more difficult test in Breathe Quality. As you can see, the performance of the Coway AP-1512HHS is still decent at trapping 99.7% of all particles down to 0.3 microns, which is still better than Alen BreatheSmart 35i and LG PuriCare AS401VSA0.

With the new carbon filter, of course, the price for a set of the Coway AP-1512HHS filters is more expensive, at around $69. You need to find an air filter compatible with the Airmega AP-1519P to get the right filter, which lasts for 1 year.

Coway AP-1512HHS Room Coverage

Coway doesn’t necessarily need to change everything inside this Coway AP-1512HHS from the original product. The fan power is the same, so I believe the room coverage is 360 square feet.

The ACH of the Coway AP-1512HHS is 5X. With such high air changes per hour rating, this air purifier can clean your room every 12 minutes.

The CADR of the Coway AP-1512HHS is 246 Dust/ 233 Smoke/ 240 Pollen (cfm). It is enough to clean the suggested room size of 360 square feet.

Coway AP-1512HHS Sound

Usually in this section, I’d talk about the noise level test for the air purifiers. As the smart version of the best air purifier for bedroom, as well as the best air purifier for babies, it is only natural for the Coway AP-1512HHS to be impressive at silent operation.

Keeping only 3 fan speeds, the Coway AP-1512HHS runs at only 24 decibels (dB) on its lowest speed, which is even quieter than a whisper. On highest speed, the noise level is measured at only 54 decibels, and it won’t disturb you when working with such noise because it is a soothing white noise that can improve your work’s efficiency.

Coway AP-1512HHS Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifiers must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criterion for reviewing how much energy this air purifier will consume.

It’s always struck me as odd that Coway never really chases good power consumption in its air purifiers, maybe to force users to use the Eco Mode. Well, the lowest power consumption of the Coway AP-1512HHS is only 5 watts, but it can be as high as 78 watts. For an air purifier with the original Energy Star rating, the Coway AP-1512HHS is decent.

If you use the Coway AP-1512HHS for 8 hours per day, you need to spend from $10 to $30 annually, depending on the most frequently used fan speed.

Coway AP-1512HHS Additional Features

Coway is making progress to bring smart air purifiers to everyone. The Airmega lineup is the pioneer, as all air purifiers now have at least one smart version.

That being said, the Coway AP-1512HHS, or actually the Airmega AP-1519P, can be connected to the IoCare app by Coway. Now you can monitor your air purifier anytime, anywhere, by using your smartphone. Moreover, as a product of the Airmega, the Coway AP-1512HHS is certainly able to connect with Alexa and the Dash Replenishment Service, meaning you can use voice control.

And don’t forget the already-good Smart Sensor of the Coway AP-1512HHS. You can always check the air quality indicator on the top control panel, and the Smart Sensor also activates the auto mode to adjust the fan speed accordingly to reduce particles.

Well, Eco Mode is still the signature additional feature of Coway air purifiers, for it can help reduce energy consumption easily. By continually tracking the indoor air quality, Eco Mode can ‘know’ when to stop the fan power, and it will remain passive for 30 minutes. This is why the Coway AP-1512HHS is the best air purifier to save on your energy bill.

We still have the basic settings, like the timer or LED indicator for filter replacement. Both these features work fine on this Coway AP-1512HHS and make your life much easier.

Our verdict

The Coway AP-1512HHS costs more obviously, but it brings many high-end features from Coway flagships to a more affordable price point. However, I don’t like the IoCare app, as it has a lot of bugs to live with. If Coway doesn’t try to fix its app, perhaps I will stick with my Coway AP-1512HH for a while.

Also, with the release of the new Coway Airmega Mighty 2, the Coway AP-1512HHS feels more expensive for little gain.
