PROS

  • Solid built
  • Even better than the old Winix performers
  • Great performance for the price
  • Dual air sensors
CONS

  • The power consumption isn’t great
  • Only 1-year warranty

Winix celebrates its 50 years of making air purifiers with the Winix C909, which is meant to achieve more market share in the low mid-range. The Winix C909 is a potential air purifier with verified performance, smart features and easy-going filter replacement. In this Winix C909 Review, we will tell everything you need before deciding to buy this air purifier or not.

Winix C909 Price

Finally an air purifier in C series, which is the prominent upgrade to the popular Winix C545, a device that’s really special for us, who’ve tested more than 400 devices of air purifying. Sadly, both the Winix C909 and C545 are going underground, as the company isn’t active at selling it on popular marketplaces. That’s the fate of the old Winix C555, which has been discontinued without anyone knowing.

The Winix C909 feels like a fusion of both the C545 and the new Winix 9800. Everything you read about Winix 9800 is true of the Winix C909, with the exception of the design. You’re getting the same internals, fan power, and even smart features that’re available on the widely-accepted 9800.

As the Winix C909 isn’t mentioned on Winix website, we can only guess its initial price to be $329 just like the Winix 9800. It is $280 at the moment, if you get it via our deal.

Yes, the most discussed air purifiers at the moment are the Coway AP-1512HHS and Airmega 230, from the South Korean rival. However, being a smart air purifier, the Winix C909 needs to compete against the Levoit Core 600S, which is holding the title of Breathe Quality’s best air purifier.

Winix C909 Design and Size

The Winix C909 is a newcomer to the Winix lineup, supplanting the old Winix C555 which apparently failed to inspire buyers like the most favorite Winix C535. With this more affordable smart air purifier, Winix hopes to attract those who aspire to the new features like voice control, but don’t have the budget to afford it.

So far, the Winix C909 just plainly borrow the design from its predecessor, with a new coating of black. It really feels like the black sheep of the company, just like how the Winix C545 was. And it’s a pity, because the design language is pretty stylish and good on this air purifier.

Other dimensions are largely the same as the C545 in my memory, being 23.6 inches in height, with 4 legs. However, the perforated holes on the front panel of Winix C909 isn’t as good as the old C545, and we have a new logo of Winix, obviously.

Well, the Winix C909 does resembles the Winix 9800 with its bottom-to-top airflow system concept. It has a control panel that’s lean to the front, which is quite typical of Winix. For this part, the Winix C909 feels exactly the same as its brother.

The Winix C909 weighs 19 lbs, so I recommend you not to move it regularly.

Winix C909 Filters

Winix C909 is just a redesigned Winix 9800 so it doesn’t have any difference for the internals. It is the same 4-stage air cleaning system in any Winix air purifier.

  1. Pre-filter – The polluted air must pass through a mesh pre-filter. This pre-filter will capture the large objects of contaminants, such as pet hair and even some kinds of pet dander and skin. It is washable.
  2. Activated Carbon Filter – The air filter can adsorb household odors from cooking, pets, and smoke and reduce VOCs.
  3. True HEPA filter – The True HEPA Filter that captures 99.97% of as small as 0.3 microns allergens, virus particles, pollen, mold and fungi particles.
  4. Winix PlasmaWave – This technology is somehow an ionizer, which can further reduce the amount of pollutants. Can be switched on/off.

If you’re concerned about the Winix C909 not being on the official Winix website, the air purifier is still certified by both the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) and California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Winix C909 has good performance, as it is tested in the same conditions as its brother 9800. Its result was the same as the Oransi Max and GermGuardian AC9600W, but just a little bit behind the TruSens Z-3000. The Winix 9800’s power was better than the Blueair DustMagnet 5210i.

winix c909 review

We still use the same Filter A from the Winix AM90 in this Winix C909. This is the most basic air filter of Winix, and it does fairly good that the company doesn’t need to change new air filter. Even in the new Winix XLC, the filter X2 seems to be the same as the filter A of this Winix C909.

Winix C909 Room Coverage

Being an AHAM-verified air purifier, the Winix C909 deserves a plus in performance ranking. The air purifier is able to clean up to 500 square feet, and the manufacturer even suggests to run it in 1000 square feet.

The ACH of Winix C909 is 4X. It will clean your room every 15 minutes.

The CADR of Winix C909 is 336 Dust/ 323 Smoke/ 384 Pollen (cfm). The Winix C909’s CADR rating is exactly the same as the Winix 9800, which is really powerful for the price.

Winix C909 Sound

Winix C909 is one air purifier that tries to be as good as its predecessors in terms of keeping the noise level low. Normally, the PlasmaWave technology will create a buzz sound of static, but if you run the Winix C909 on its lowest speed, you won’t hear that annoying noise.

The noise level of the Winix C909 is measured to be only 25 decibels (dB), so it is quite suitable for the bedroom.

Winix C909 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.

Winix C909 is an Energy Star air purifier, just like its brothers. However, the power consumption of the Winix C909 isn’t good at 95 watts, so its Smoke-free CADR per watt is 3.6, meaning it’s behind the older Winix AM80 or HR900, in terms of energy saving.

If you use the Winix C909 at least 8 hours per day, the annual cost would be $34.

Winix C909 Additional Features

The Winix C909 is a Wi-Fi enabled air purifier, which is not a surprise because the predecessor Winix C545 has the same feature. You can manage the air purifier settings on your smartphone app, as well as control it via voice commands. Such convenience, is it?

The dual air sensors return to the Winix C909, this time it is implemented the same as the Winix 9800. Its Auto Mode can be enabled, to measure and adjust the fan power according to the real-time air quality. Winix C909 also has a light sensor, and if it doesn’t detect ambient light, it will automatically run and fix on the Sleep Mode, which is its lowest speed. It also disables PlasmaWave to stop the crackling noise made by the ionizer.

There is a LED indicator for filter replacement, which is the common between Winix air purifying units.

Our verdict

Winix C909 is a step up from the Winix C545 with higher performance, and it does keep the same juice that we love from the previous air purifier. Sadly, it’s quite hard to order this air purifier, as even Winix doesn’t upload the product on its website.
