Winix P450 Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

The Winix P450 (Winix WACP450) is the biggest brother of the FresHome family and together with the next-gen Winix U450, this air purifier can finally match the fan power with famous things like the Honeywell HPA300 and Whirlpool WPPRO2000. We are ready to end up the final candidate of Winix FresHome family in our Winix P450 Review.

The Winix P450 is discontinued, so if you want a great performer at the same price point, you don’t need to find anywhere because the Winix AM90 is so great to be your best companion. Also the latest Winix 9800 is released, packing with more power.

Winix P450 ranks B in our air purifier ranking list. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

In Breathe Quality, we have reviewed all air purifiers under these sections. Also, we guarantee that:

Winix is ready to end the series of FresHome air purifiers with the introduction of the biggest brother – the Winix P450. Apart from the apparent increase in size, the Winix P450 follows the core of Winix P150 and Winix P300 since beginning. This review is only to answer one question: Is it worth to upgrade to the Winix P450 from Winix P300 and Winix P150? Let’s find out in this Winix P450 Review.

Winix P450 Price

The Winix P450 (together with the Winix B451) is pricier than previous generations, but with an even more fan power than the previous Winix P300, to cover a room of up to 450 square feet and make this the most complete-feeling one in FresHome family yet.

When the Winix P150 arrived back in 2015, it was a revelation for budget air purifier with high efficiency air filtration system. It showed us that an air purifier under $150 didn’t have to come with just only one HEPA filter and dodgy performance. Now we are onto the third version of FresHome model.

What’s new here? Of course, the bigger size and better fan power. And just like what Fellowes is doing with its AeraMax air purifiers, Winix does the same with the Winix P450: just only change the size, and keep the whole design concept. Why do you need to change the design concept if it’s too good to use?

Therefore, the price of the Winix P450 is just a next upgrade from the previous Winix P300, and this time it is $279 for the official price. However, the Winix P450 has been discontinued.

Without mentioning the Winix brothers, the Winix P450 is still under a very difficult competition with a lot of strong contenders, like the Blue Pure 211 and Honeywell HPA300 with even better fan power and much lower price. And you can’t forget the smart air purifiers like the Levoit Core 600S, Airmega 250 and again, Honeywell HPA250B. You see, there are a lot of air purifiers to select, and even among the Winix army, the Winix P450 is still not the best, the new Winix 9800 and Winix C909 are better.

Winix P450 Design and Size

The Winix P450’s design is very similar to the older models, but also borrows a new bigger size to indicate this air purifier is for a larger room size. Look at both the front and back and you will see that this is almost impossibly simple. The Winix P450 is just that, with one front plate and a simple seal to change the air filters from the back. Other than that, it is just a bigger Winix P300.

Just a couple of years ago, even native air purifier brands like the Honeywell and Austin Air tried to keep the same appearance for its air purifiers, only change the size to hint the actual room coverage. While it helps you easily tell one air purifier from a specific brand, it is really boring to have a similar air purifier over and over again. It doesn’t work that way for the Winix, as it still prefers to change the appearance a lot of time, as you can see from different products like Winix 6300-2, Winix WAC9500, Winix HR950 or Winix QS. They are all different, and if you don’t have much experience, you won’t know that they are all from the same company.

The size of this Winix P450 is quite big, with 25.6 inches in height and 17.3 inches in width. You can easily see the difference in size between the three models as below: the Winix P150, Winix P300 and Winix P450.

You will get the same bottom-to-top airflow system concept from the Winix P450. There is no innovation for design concept in this Winix P450, like how this company did with the Winix C535 and the next Winix C555. However, the Winix P450 can still make use of the 360° air intake to pull in more polluted air than the straightforward airflow like in the Winix 5300-2 or Winix 5500-2.

Winix P450 weighs 19.4 lbs, and with only one inconvenient handle, it will be a more difficult task to move this air purifier around your home.

Winix P450 Filters

Here’s a bit I need to stress: the Winix P450 is bigger, meaning it the True HEPA filter will have a larger size, and obviously more filter media than the predecessors. Tellingly, though, it’s the same 3-stage air cleaning system in this Winix P450.

  1. Pre-filter – The polluted air must pass through a built-in pre-filter. This pre-filter will help capture the large objects of contaminants, such as pet hair and even some kinds of pet dander and skin. The pre-filter is also attached with an Activated Carbon filter to help reduce the pet odors and smoke, as well as some common household chemicals.
  2. True HEPA filter – The True HEPA Filter that captures 99.97% of as small as 0.3 microns allergens, virus particles, pollen, mold and fungi particles.
  3. Winix PlasmaWave – This technology is one kind of ionizer, which can further reduce the amount of pollutants. Can be switched on/off.

The Winix P450 is not an air purifier that’s all about packing in extra air filters. If you want loads of extra little bits of new air filters, you must aim for the Winix U300 or Winix U450. This review is just not the place to be.

What this air purifier excels at, just like the Winix P300, is getting the basics right. The extras you do get here are the True HEPA filter is larger to sync with the better fan power, so your Winix P450 will clean your room a lot quicker.

If you hadn’t already guessed, the Winix P450 is still the very usual combination of True HEPA filter and PlasmaWave technology to deal with your everyday air quality’s problems. The mechanical True HEPA filter of Winix is the real deal to eliminate 99.97% of any airborne allergens including of pollen, mold spores, dust, pet dander, microbes and even small bacteria and viruses. And the PlasmaWave technology is the extra protection to guarantee the removal of airborne allergens.

Because the Winix P450 is one of the mid-range air purifiers of this brand, I must raised the bar of my performance test to a room of 250 square feet. This is a more difficult test than any other Winix air purifiers in the same price range, like the Winix AM90, Winix HR900 or Winix NK100. Surprisingly, there are not much opponents to compete with the Winix P450 in this price range, and using the low-fan devices like the Oransi OV200, Alen BreatheSmart FLEX, Philips 2000i or Sharp FP-F50UW will be much easier for the Winix P450.

The result, as you can see from the chart below, the Winix P450 was the clear winner with the high efficiency of 99.95% to trap any particles as small as 0.3 microns, while others can only reach the efficiency of 99.8% and less. You can also see the extra performance of this Winix P450 over other Winix devices in the same price range, like Winix AM90 and Winix HR900.

winix p450 review

The Winix P450 will use the filter E from this brand, and the filter cost is higher than the previous models. Its price is about $89, and the True HEPA filter can only last for 1 year. Yes, if you compare with the devices from other brands, you can see they are all slightly cheaper than the Winix P450. For example, the Oransi OV200 is just $79 and the Sharp FP-F50UW is even $86 for a 2-year HEPA filter.

Winix P450 Room Coverage

Winix claims that the fan power of this Winix P450 will be for a room of 450 square feet. From my experience with the Winix P300, the Winix P450 can manage to clean a large room thanks to high CADR rating.

The ACH of Winix P450 is 4X. Even for a large room air purifier like the Winix P450, it still exchanges the air in the room every 15 minutes.

The CADR of Winix P450 is 298 Dust/ 291 Smoke/ 343 Pollen (cfm). This could easily be the highest CADR rating for an air purifier in low to mid-range budget of Winix. If you demand an air purifier with better CADR rating, you should look for the Sharp FP-A80UW, Whirlpool WPPRO2000 or Blue Pure 121.

Winix P450 Sound

If you’ve already read the sound section of the Winix P150 or Winix P300, then your expectation for the silent operation of Winix P450 is probably pretty high.

And so it should be, as the Winix P450 can run smoothly with the lowest noise level of only 28 decibels (dB), such noise level of the whisper only.

Winix is an air purifier brand with fame in making low noise level air purifiers. Even with a much more fan power, this company improves the fan to reduce the noise level as low as possible. This is also the effort Winix tries to do to reduce the ozone emission from its PlasmaWave technology.

So to say, the Winix P450 is a great air purifier for the large bedroom, or the office.

Winix P450 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.

High power consumption was the biggest issue with the early products of Winix, and the Winix P450 is not an exception. With nearly triple the fan power of the previous Winix P150, you can easily guess the rated power of this Winix P450 to be triple the number of 40 watts. To be exact, the Winix P450 has a high power consumption of 110 watts. For an Energy Star rating air purifier, it is still lower than the 130-watt Honeywell HPA300.

For using the Winix P450 8 hours per day, it would cost you $40 per year.

Winix P450 Additional Features

The “Set and Forget” function of the Winix P450, just like any other air purifiers of this brand, is all about the Smart Sensor and Auto Mode of this air purifier. With this function, the Winix P450 can automatically adjust the fan power to match the current indoor air quality. Though the sensor is only the odor sensor (accept it, even the Winix U450 has only the odor sensor), this Winix P450 is a necessary device to help you forget about any complicated control.

Winix P450 can easily be controlled by the remote when you are far from this air purifier (only 20 ft from the air purifier). Moreover, when in the Auto Mode, this air purifier activates the light sensor, which can detect the amount of ambient light in the environment and automatically dims the control panel light and changes the fan speed to low.

And finally, you still have the LED indicator for filter replacement in this Winix P450.

Our verdict

Winix P450 is the best air purifier for performance in the mid-range segment of Winix, and if you ignore the Smart Wi-Fi function in the Winix NK105 and Winix HR1000, you should really consider the Winix P450. Of course, the air filtration process is the old one of Winix, but it is still great, by the way.

Winix P450 has been discontinued, along with its brothers. However, you have the Winix AM90 and/or Winix 9800 with the same great performance and much better features.
