Coway Airmega 250S Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

The Coway Airmega 250S is a solid mid-range air purifier with a few standout features – but the standard Airmega 230 is still a better buy. Of course, if you can afford a mid-range air purifier, the Coway Airmega 250S is still a decent option. Let’s find out why in our Coway Airmega 250S Review.

Coway Airmega 250S ranks A- in our air purifier ranking list. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

PROS

  • Good smart sensors
  • 3-year warranty is okay
CONS

  • Still only has dust sensor
  • Is more expensive

Coway finally brought the newest smart air purifier from its Airmega lineup – the Airmega 250S, and its standard version, the Airmega 250, to the mid-range market, which fills the gap between its popular air purifiers, the Coway AP-1512HH and Airmega 300S. How does the middling do? We will know in our latest Coway Airmega 250S Review.

Other Coway’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Coway AIRMEGA 250S Price

The Coway Airmega 250S comes in a price range that used to be where the famous Coway AP-1512HH did in the past, with all the latest modern features from its flagship, a new all-in-one air filter, and very good performance for a mid-range air purifier. It would be easy to recommend if there weren’t a reason. The release of the new Airmega 230 and Airmega 240 with even better performance has set the bar for a reduction in price for the Airmega 250S.

Yes, the price is $349 for the standard Airmega 250, and that goes up to $399 for our today’s unit, the Airmega 250S. Right now, the price is far higher than the Coway AP-1512HHS, which has happened to be our recommendation for the best air purifier.

While the Airmega 250S offers lots of the features of that premium Airmega 400S that’s more modestly priced, it cuts a few corners here and there to keep that price low. Because of the deep cut, the Airmega 250S isn’t really a better air purifier compared with others in the Airmega 200 series.

And we can’t forget the competition, as the Levoit Core 600SWinix 9800 and Winix AM90 are doing even better for less. If you need only raw performance, the Blue Pure 211 Auto can clean faster than this Airmega 250S.

Overall, though, I was impressed with the Airmega 250S during our testing. It’s the best of its lineup, but it’s just a shame it won’t be the standout member of the big Coway family, as the Coway AP-1512HHS is still cheaper with relatively few downgrades.

Coway AIRMEGA 250S Design and Size

The design language of the Coway Airmega 250S has changed dramatically from any of its predecessors. It is thick and chunky, which is inherited by its successors, the Airmega 230 and Airmega 240. At 19.7 x 18.5 x 8.3, the Airmega 250S has a square-shaped appearance that helps it blend with any decor.

On both sides of the air purifier, we have handles, which is very important when you need to move the air purifier around. This design feature is quite small that many manufacturers forget (including Coway; look at the 230), but for an air purifier at 20.3 lbs, the handles are necessary.

A nice improvement over the first Airmega 150 is that the front air outlet extends to both sides, which improves the input airflow a little bit. Note that the Airmega 250S still runs the same bottom-to-top airflow system concept, but it doesn’t have a 360° air inlet like the high-end Airmega 300 and Airmega 400. Coway did it to reduce the depth dimension, so you can easily snug this air purifier into a kitchen table.

The bigger front air inlet can also improve the accuracy of the air sensor on the side. Coway called it the EZ release design” because it is very simple to remove the pre-filter as well as the air inlet for regular maintenance.

The top control panel of this Airmega 250S is quite similar to that of its brothers, with minimalist buttons and a real-time air quality indicator. Coway has locked a part of the top air outlet for unknown reasons, and I think it can limit the clean air output.

Coway AIRMEGA 250S Filters

By checking the amount of air filters and the types of air filters used, we can guess a part of an air purifier’s performance of cleaning indoor air. The Airmega 250S features the top-tier air filtration system of this brand with 2 stages.

  1. Pre-filter – An extractor-type washable pre-filter will help you capture the large particles of contaminants, such as pet hair, human hair, and mold. It is easy to remove, so you can maintain your unit easily. Slide out, rinse, and hang to dry.
  2. Max2 filter – Combining both an Activated Carbon filter and a True HEPA filter, this filter can capture up to 99.97% of airborne particles smaller than 0.3 microns. The HEPA filter adds antimicrobial treatment to prevent mold, bacteria, and viruses.

On paper, the Airmega 250S’s Max2 air filter is arguably one of its biggest downgrades from the Airmega 230 and Airmega 240; that’s not to say it’s bad, but the Airmega 250S is at least $50 more expensive than its brother, whereas it seems that Coway is focusing on other sections of the air purifier.

It is still a great Max2 air filter that I’d love, and it is one of the reasons we put the Airmega 400S at the top of our list of recommendations for the best air purifier. In a performance test of 200 square feet, the Airmega 250S did quite well, as it captured 99.95% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns in 1 hour. It is as good as the latest flagship of Guardian Technologies – the GermGuardian AC9600W. It is also better than many air purifiers in the same price range, including the Vornado PCO375DCMedify MA-35 and Blueair DustMagnet 5240i.

coway airmega 250s review

One reason you may think the air filter of Airmega 250S is a downgrade from the 230 is its cheaper air filter, which is only $79 and can last for 1 year. However, I feel both air filters are exactly the same material, and perhaps the lower price is because of their smaller size.

Coway AIRMEGA 250S Room Coverage

Like all Coway air purifiers, the Airmega 250S’ room coverage is completely tested in many labs in South Korea. It is recommended for any room up to 465 square feet.

The ACH of Coway Airmega 250S is 4X. With this air changes per hour rating, the Airmega 250S can clean your room every 15 minutes. If you need to clean a 930-sq-ft room, the Airmega 250S can only clean your room twice per hour, or every 30 minutes.

The CADR of Coway Airmega 250S is 261 Dust/ 249 Smoke/ 230 Pollen (cfm). The CADR of the Airmega 250S is a bit lower than others in the Airmega 200 series, but it is still better than the Coway AP-1512HHS, resulting in it cleaning a bit quicker.

Coway AIRMEGA 250S Sound

While the low noise level was one of the Airmega 250S’ best features, the result isn’t as good as the Airmega 230 and Airmega 240. But I must repeat that the Airmega 250S is still one of the best air purifiers for bedroom.

The Airmega 250S performs quietly at the lowest speed, at only 22 decibels (dB). In fact, you won’t notice the air purifier running or not. It’s likely the motor of the air purifier is inherited from the top-end models of Coway, so it can trim the noise to such a level.

On the highest speed, the noise level is still very tolerable at 54 decibels. It is by no means the most quiet air purifier, but if you want it for your bedroom, the Airmega 250S can nail it.

Coway AIRMEGA 250S Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifiers must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criterion for reviewing how much energy this air purifier will consume.

The Coway Airmega 250S isn’t certified as an Energy Star air purifier at the time of writing, but I believe it should be in the near future. The rated power of the Airmega 250S is only 64 watts, despite its high performance.

If you’re going to use the Coway Airmega 250S for 8 hours per day, you only need to pay $23 per year.

Coway AIRMEGA 250S Additional Features

While the standard Airmega 250 does resemble the Airmega 230 and Airmega 240 in terms of additional features, the Airmega 250S is the king here. It can be connected to a smartphone app, and you can monitor the device from your smartphone app. It is also compatible with voice controls like Google Assistant and Alexa.

It still features a dust air sensor that can detect the air quality index and adjust the fan speed based on any changes in the indoor air quality. Real-time monitoring keeps you informed of the status of your air quality, and you can also turn off the light if you need to sleep.

You can adjust the air sensor sensitivity up to 3 levels. The higher the value, the more active its air sensor will be in responding to changes in the air quality index. The Coway Airmega 250S has a timer feature that can be selected between 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours.

It seems the signature Eco Mode returns to the Airmega 250S. If the air sensor detects only “Good” air quality for 10 minutes continuously, it will stop the fan. After 30 minutes of idle time or whenever the air sensor detects “Bad” air quality, it will resume the air purifier.

Finally, we have LED indicators for filter replacement. This feature will keep reminding you when to change the filter for optimal performance.

Our verdict

The Coway Airmega 250S is certainly what loyal fans of Coway would want: a mid-range Airmega air purifier with a Max2 filter and Wi-Fi capability. However, the price is a bit too high for what it’s worth in comparison with the Coway AP-1512HHS, and the Airmega 230 performs a little bit better than the standard Airmega 250 while being cheaper.
