PROS

  • Good filter life

CONS

  • Performance is behind competition

Coway is a South Korean home appliance company founded in 1989, best known for its water purifiers and air purifiers. Its Airmega line has become one of the more recognized air purifier ranges in the US market, spanning compact personal units like the Airmega 50 all the way up to large whole-room models like the Airmega ProX. Time for the personal Coway Airmega 50 review.

Coway Airmega 50 Price

Coway started selling its Airmega line in the US, and alongside the Airmega 100 and Airmega 150 came the Airmega 50, the brand’s attempt to get into the ‘mini air purifier’ market with a super-low-price device.

It is a strong effort from Coway, a Korean air purifier brand with many models that are not available in the North American market, aside from the well-known Coway AP-1512HH. Coway appears to be aiming to compete across every market segment, as the company clearly has the potential and resources, but still lacks consistent execution.

The Coway Airmega 50 costs just $79, so it’s designed to pose some serious competition to similarly priced purifiers from Levoit and Blueair, most notable the Levoit Core 200S and Blue Pure 511. We also see older American brands making a stronger push in the competition with models like the GermGuardian AC3000 and the Honeywell HPA125.

Coway Airmega 50 Design and Size

The Coway Airmega 50 has a plastic body, but the air purifier doesn’t feel as cheap as many other plastic purifiers we’ve tried. The unit weighs 3.5 lbs and measures 6.7 x 12.6 x 6.7 inches, so it’s one of the tiniest air purifiers you can buy at the moment. It is exactly the “mini” Coway Airmega 100.

On the top of the Coway Airmega 50, above the air outlet, there’s a touch panel with fan speed and mode controls embedded into the surface. It’s easily-reachable and very snappy to use, and we found it made switching between modes super easy.

We tested the white model, but we heard of a black model for this Coway Airmega 50. The body has a clean cylindrical design that catches ambient light across the smooth housing, and we liked the resulting appearance. It uses the standard 360° air intake and bottom-to-top airflow design, a setup found in more than 90% of air purifiers in this price range. We must thank the Levoit LV-H132 as a trendsetter.

Coway Airmega 50 Filters

The air filtration system of Coway is usually an all-in-one air filter, which is mainly for easy replacement. Deep inside the Airmega 50, we have a simple 3-stage air cleaning system.

  1. Pre-filter – A vacuumable pre-filter is outside the main filter to capture large objects of contaminants.
  2. HyperCaptive filter – It is actually a True HEPA filter, which is rated to capture up to 99.97% of airborne particles smaller than 0.3 microns; and 99.5% of particles down to 0.1 microns.
  3. Activated Carbon filter – A deodorization layer inside the HEPA filter, to deal with odors and smoke.

The Coway Airmega 50 uses a 3-in-1 filtration system, which is essentially the standard setup found in most budget cylindrical air purifiers today. Of course, a HEPA filter from a well-known brand like Coway is significantly better than one from an unknown Chinese brand, and the difference can be substantial. One important rule when buying an air purifier: avoid random, untested products.

In our most basic test for budget air purifiers, the Coway Airmega 50 performed fairly well, although its results were slightly behind some competing models, for example the TCL Breeva A3 and GermGuardian AC3000.

Coway Airmega 50 review

The filter of the Airmega 50 can last for 8 months, which is longer than the usual 6 months from other brand. It costs cheaper, too, at only $21.

Coway Airmega 50 Room Coverage

The Coway Airmega 50 is best suited for rooms up to 104 square feet. It also appears that Coway no longer submits some of its air purifiers for official AHAM testing, likely as a cost-saving measure, although that does slightly affect the brand’s credibility.

The ACH of the Airmega 50 is 5X. In its suggested room size, the Airmega 50 can exchange air 5 times per hour.

The CADR of the Airmega 50 is 74 Dust/ 67 Smoke/ 96 Pollen (cfm). Performance-wise, the Coway Airmega 50 is behind the competition, but nothing serious.

Coway Airmega 50 Sound

Generally we find modest CADR figures don’t add much noise to your bedroom, which is reasonable, because the fan power is small. That’s exactly the case here, as the Coway Airmega 50 operates at only 18.4 decibels (dB) on its lowest fan speed.

If you push the device to its maximum setting, however, the noise level can be a bit high at 57 decibels. Luckily, the Airmega 50 has the Auto mode to keep its fan power as low as possible.

Coway Airmega 50 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.

The Coway Airmega 50 is an Energy Star air purifier, just like its brothers, and the rated power is only 11 watts. Honestly, it is good, and Energy Star itself promotes this air purifier as the latest most efficient device.

If you’re using the Airmega 50 for at least 8 hours per day, you only need to pay $4.82 annually.

Coway Airmega 50 Additional Features

It’s 2026, and even a budget air purifier under $100 like the Coway Airmega 50 should include a Smart Sensor. It can automatically adjust the airflow based on air quality conditions and allows you to monitor indoor air quality, making everyday use much more convenient. More so than with most automatic air purifier modes at this price, Auto mode feels closer to what you’d find on a more premium unit. It uses a dust sensor to read conditions and respond.

Other than that, the Airmega 50 has Night light feature, Child lock setting and a simple Timer, which you can schedule up to 8 hours. Finally, the Coway Airmega 50 has a LED indicator for filter replacement.
