Coway Airmega 450 Price

Ever since Coway committed to releasing a cylindrical line of Airmegas – starting with the introduction of the compact Airmega 50 – that extra-large entry has always felt like it’s struggled to find favor with buyers in the same way as its siblings. Most people are familiar with the large console-style air purifiers from Coway, but few really know how well the company can perform when it comes to manufacturing tower-style air purifiers.

The new Coway Airmega 450 is Coway’s attempt to bring the premium experience of the Coway Airmega 400 to a more accessible price range. It aims to deliver many of the flagship’s strengths while costing around $499, similar to the Coway Airmega 300. In reality, the Airmega 450 can often be found for even less if you check the deals we share at Breathe Quality.

Launching alongside the Airmega 350, the Airmega 450 targets a higher segment, and it primarily competes against the Blue Signature Large and AeraMax SE. We are not sure whether you should choose another air purifier over the Blue Pure 211i Max, but the Coway Airmega 450 will certainly appeal to people who already trust and prefer Coway. Sometimes, brand reputation alone can be the deciding factor for many buyers.

Coway Airmega 450 Design and Size

At a glance, the Airmega 450 looks very much like the Airmega 350. But closer examination reveals a newly taller design, at dimensions of 13.4 × 13.4 × 29.5 inches, so the Airmega 450 can’t use the same filter as the Airmega 350. It’s also been put through Coway’s award-winning design process, earning recognition for its minimalist cylindrical aesthetic.

So long as you appreciate understated elegance, this year’s lineup of Airmega 450 (and Airmega 350) colors includes two finishes (white and a truly refined mocha beige), both of which showcase a clean, cohesive exterior, with the dust-resistant intake grill seamlessly integrated into the body panel. It’s a good look, and probably one of the most refined air purifier designs in this price category ever.

Aside from a tweak to its inside fan motor and color palette, the body of the unit still plays host to a cylindrical 360º intake design and a bottom-to-top airflow system concept. So far, the Coway Airmega 450 has nothing alike to the flagship Airmega 400. The Coway Airmega 450 is quite heavy at 25 lbs, and the hidden handle just barely supports you whenever you need to move the air purifier.

Coway Airmega 450 Filters

To evaluate an air purifier’s performance, we usually start by checking the types of filters it uses and the number of filtration layers included in the system. We have a 3-stage air cleaning system from the Coway Airmega 450, which is exclusive to the 350 and 450 lines.

1. Pre-filter – A vacuumable pre-filter is outside the main filter to capture large objects of contaminants.
2. True HEPA filter – Aside from the standard HEPA filter that catches 99.97% of all particles down to 0.3 microns, you can select two different custom filter options for your specific needs:
   • Allergen absorber coating, which is mostly tannic acid, is able to chemically denature allergens like pet dander and dust mite.
   • Intense Smoke absorber coating, which is potassium permanganate (KMnO₄), similar to the coating of the high-end Airpura V700, but to a much lesser content. The coating is effective against VOCs.
3. Activated Carbon filter – The Activated Carbon filter is effective against smoke, odors, gases and VOCs.

Performance-wise, the filtration system may look the same as the Airmega 400 before it, but the Airmega 450’s filtration setup has a big secret. The filter assembly that has – for the longest time – been a fixed dual-stage Max2 design, is making the leap to a modular 3-in-1 custom system, complete with side-access filter replacement.

Being customizable, the new filter of the Airmega 450 is highly versatile, and you can choose which one that’s the most suitable for your home or office. The system comes in three distinct variants – Fresh Starter for everyday use, Allergen for pet dander and seasonal pollen, and Intense Smoke for wildfire smoke or heavy cooking – and owners can switch between them at any replacement cycle, giving the Airmega 450 a degree of long-term adaptability the older fixed-format filters simply couldn’t offer.

At its price point, the Coway Airmega 450 faces much tougher competition and therefore undergoes more demanding performance comparisons. Even so, it easily achieved top marks in our test by capturing 99.99% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns.

The more affordable Airmega 350 also delivers excellent performance for the price, outperforming competitors like the AeraMax SE and the Blue Pure 211+ with ease.

Every year, you need to replace the air filter of the Airmega 450 for optimal performance, but the filter is a bit higher than we expected at $109. If you want to buy the Allergen or Intense Smoke filter, you need to pay an extra $10.

Coway Airmega 450 Room Coverage

Again, we would not take Coway’s advertised coverage claim of 3285 square feet too literally. Although the Coway Airmega 450 is certainly designed for large rooms, a more realistic coverage area is around 687 square feet based on Energy Star standards.

The ACH of the Airmega 450 is 5X. If you want to use the Airmega 450 in a room of 3285 square feet, the air purifier will exchange air only once per hour.

The CADR of the Airmega 450 is 454 Dust/ 443 Smoke/ 450 Pollen (cfm). This CADR rating is even better than the Airmega 400, at a cheaper price.

Coway Airmega 450 Sound

We have Coway’s Sleep mode bringing the unit down to a whisper-quiet 23.6 decibels (dB) for overnight use, without compromising filtration effectiveness. That’s truly impressive for a large-room air purifier like the Coway Airmega 450.

On the subject of Turbo mode noise, at the time of writing, several user reviews have raised concerns over a more prominent sound level that seems to span the entire new Airmega cylindrical line in Turbo Mode (meaning the issue isn’t isolated to just the Airmega 450 – the Airmega 350 shares a similar noise profile at maximum speed). It doesn’t appear to be a defect, and while the 57.7 dB ceiling is within Coway’s published specification, it is audibly noticeable in open-plan spaces during active purification cycles.

Coway Airmega 450 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.

The new HyperVortex fan motor is truly better than the older fan architecture, as the Coway Airmega 450 has a power consumption of only 66 watts. It deserves the Energy Star rating, rivaling even the flagship Airmega 400 in terms of performance per watt ratio.

If you’re using the Airmega 450 for at least 8 hours per day, you need to pay only $29 annually.

Coway Airmega 450 Additional Features

At the time of writing, we have not yet tested the Coway Airmega 450S in our lab, and the Coway Airmega 450 reviewed here is only the standard version of the air purifier. As you might expect from the naming, it does not include Wi-Fi connectivity or voice control features.

Instead, the Coway Airmega 450 offers one notable advantage over its smaller sibling, the Coway Airmega 350, and that is its advanced Smart Sensor system. The Airmega 450 includes a full range of particle sensors, including PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 detection. As a result, it provides highly accurate air quality readings, and the Auto mode responds almost instantly to changes in the environment.

One thing you should never forget about Coway air purifiers: the exclusive Eco mode. By switching the air purifier into standby mode, the Eco mode can reduce the power consumption of the Airmega 450 by up to 30%. It is a great thing to have, especially on an Energy Star air purifier.

Finally, the Coway Airmega 450 includes all the essential features users would expect, including a Child Lock, Timer, Night Light, and a filter replacement indicator. Overall, the Airmega 450 provides a well-rounded feature set that covers nearly all everyday needs.

The Coway Airmega 450 is definitely the strongest candidate for the title of the best air purifier from this South Korean brand. However, we recommend you to also look for the Coway Airmega 450S, for a “smarter” experience.
