It’s a shame, though, that it’s also the most expensive Coway to date – and that, ultimately, may hold it back. Let’s talk about it in the new Coway Airmega ProX review.

Coway Airmega ProX Price

The Coway Airmega ProX is the closest thing to a commercial-grade inflection point in residential air purification we have at the moment. It’s by far the most capable large-room air purifier Coway has ever made – remarkably powerful, remarkably quiet, exquisitely built, undeniably effective, and full of smart auto-adjusting features – and goes straight to the top of our list of the best air purifiers for large spaces you can buy.

I like it so much that I find myself frantically searching for weaknesses. I probe each part looking for a place where Coway may have miscalculated and, with very few exceptions, I can’t find any weaknesses.

If I had to pinpoint where Coway trips up, it would be in two areas: the omission of Wi-Fi connectivity, which leaves the Airmega ProX unable to integrate with any smart-home platform or companion app, and the price, which now flirts with $999. That’s a lot to spend for any air purifier, though in fairness this really is like two commercial-grade units in one – a dual-motor purifier and a dual-filter system – and so you might be able to justify the outlay.

With the Coway Airmega 400S coming close to the $749 point, we think it makes sense to consider the Breathe Quality deal for the Coway Airmega ProX, which lowers the price to around $849. At that price, the Airmega ProX feels reasonably justified given its extremely powerful airflow performance. However, you would give up the Wi-Fi connectivity available on the Airmega 400S.

The Coway Airmega ProX is also Coway’s answer to the highly competitive $1,000 air purifier segment, which is still dominated by non-smart models like the Austin Air HealthMate Plus and the Airpura R700. The Airmega ProX can deliver similarly powerful airflow performance while finally adding the Smart Sensor features many users have been waiting for at this price level.

It may not be the perfect premium air purifier yet, but for now, we are still waiting for a truly complete option in this price range.

Coway Airmega ProX Design and Size

If you think the pace of large-room air purifier innovation feels somewhat ho-hum, you probably haven’t seen or touched the new Coway Airmega ProX. We love the South Korean air purifiers, from the LG PuriCare AS560DWR0 that we made a review long time ago, to this new Coway Airmega ProX. They all feel modern, innovative and smart.

Today, it seems Coway is experimenting with the new tower design for its air purifiers, with both the lineup of the Airmega 450 and Airmega 350 using this design. The Coway Airmega ProX stands tall at 36.6 inches, taller than what we could think about the Airmega 400S, and you shouldn’t worry about its performance, because the flagship Airmega ProX has a 360° air intake, especially to maximize its fan power.

Even the weight is notable. Between versions, Coway added a full dual-motor system, the same way we saw from the previous Coway flagships, so the Coway Airmega ProX is super heavy at 51 lbs. And this is the weight of an air purifier using mostly plastic for its materials. Thankfully, we can roll the Airmega ProX into a room with its hidden wheels. A must have feature for an air purifier with such weight.

Size and weight aside, the Coway Airmega ProX feels authoritative in a room because of the excellent materials. Its cabinet is built from 30% post-consumer recycled plastic, with a smooth, matte-finish panel on the front and back. A substantial, integrated control cluster sits prominently on the top of the unit.

Once again, the Coway Airmega ProX is available in two main color options, following the same approach seen in many recent Coway air purifiers since the Coway Airmega 250S. Our testing unit comes in beige, though you can also choose the white version if you prefer a cleaner and more neutral look.

Coway Airmega ProX Filters

To evaluate an air purifier’s performance, we usually start by checking the types of filters it uses and the number of filtration layers included in the system. We have the same 2-stage air cleaning system from the Coway Airmega ProX, just like the Airmega 400S before it.

1. Pre-filter – A powerful washable pre-filter is outside the main filter to capture large objects of contaminants.
2. Max2 filter – Combining both an Activated Carbon filter and a True HEPA filter, this filter can capture up to 99.97% of airborne particles smaller than 0.3 microns. It also reduces more than 99 percent of volatile organic compounds and fumes, such as NH₃ and CH₃CHO.

A wider and taller cabinet means not one, but two complete filtration stacks. The washable pre-filter is now a full-width mesh panel on each side, and we have the signature Max2 filter for the Coway Airmega ProX – the green True HEPA rated to capture 99.97% of 0.3-micron particles and 99.999% of particles down to 0.01 microns.

It is backed up by a strong fan power, and the Coway Airmega ProX can deal with a much larger test than we used to work with $1000 air purifiers in the past. The result is super impressive as the Coway Airmega ProX can trap 99.79% of all particles down to 0.3 microns, after 1 hour. This is a better result than the TruSens Z-6000 and Airdog X8.

Even for a high-end air purifier like the Coway Airmega ProX, Coway still uses the old technology for its Max2 filter, and it lasts for only 1 year. Luckily, the filter cost is only $199, which is decent for a $1000 air purifier like this one.

Coway Airmega ProX Room Coverage

Coway is aiming to deliver the highest-performing air purifier in its lineup with the Coway Airmega ProX. It is a massive unit that Coway claims can cover entire homes up to 4,253 square feet. However, we recommend using the air purifier in spaces of around 894 square feet instead, which aligns more closely with the coverage recommendation listed on the Energy Star certification page.

The ACH of the Coway Airmega ProX is 5X. If you want to use the Airmega ProX in a room of 4253 square feet, the air purifier will exchange air only once per hour.

The CADR of the Coway Airmega ProX is 586 Dust/ 577 Smoke/ 450 Pollen (cfm). It’s a step up from the Coway Airmega 450, and the Coway Airmega ProX is also among the most powerful air purifiers in the world.

Coway Airmega ProX Sound

Not only does the Coway Airmega ProX pack a powerful binary motor, it’s a dual-motor system built specifically for Coway’s largest residential unit: the HyperCaptive dual-stack configuration. The difference between the standard Airmega and the Airmega ProX is large and measurable, but how about its noise level? The answer, the Coway Airmega ProX is still great at 23 decibels (dB), the same as the Airmega 450.

I measured the noise levels across all three fan speeds, and the Coway Airmega ProX reached 58 decibels (dB) at its highest setting, which is quite reasonable considering its extremely powerful airflow. Modern fan and motor technology clearly play a major role in maintaining such strong performance while keeping the noise level relatively controlled.

Coway Airmega ProX Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.

The Coway Airmega ProX is another impressive Energy Star-certified model from Coway, and it may be the company’s most innovative and energy-efficient air purifier to date. Despite its extremely powerful airflow, the Airmega ProX consumes only 56 watts of power, which is even more efficient than the Airmega 350, another Energy Star-certified model with significantly lower airflow performance.

If you’re using the Airmega ProX for at least 8 hours per day, you need to pay only $23 annually.

Coway Airmega ProX Additional Features

When it comes to smart features, the Coway Airmega ProX takes a surprisingly restrained approach. For a flagship model, it lacks the app connectivity that has become a core feature across many premium Coway Airmega air purifiers. Perhaps we will see an “Airmega ProX S” with Wi-Fi support in the future, but so far, Coway has not announced anything officially.

Back to the Smart Sensor, which is a plus for the Coway Airmega ProX (ironically) in this high-range segment. Just look at the Austin Air Bedroom Machine or Airpura V700, we trade off the convenient lifestyle for, well, a full-steel body. With the Smart Sensor, the Airmega ProX reacts with your indoor environment automatically, so you only need to turn the air purifier on, and forget about it.

The Coway Airmega ProX also includes Coway’s signature Eco mode, which helps conserve additional energy by placing the air purifier into standby mode after detecting “very good” air quality for 30 consecutive minutes. As soon as air pollution is detected again, the Airmega ProX automatically powers back on and increases the fan speed to respond quickly to changing air conditions.

Finally, we have the same additional features on the Coway Airmega ProX like its residential air purifier brothers: Child lock setting, light sensor and indicator for filter replacement.

Our verdict

The Coway Airmega ProX still has a few minor drawbacks here and there, but overall, it is an exceptionally powerful and efficient air purifier that is difficult to ignore. If you are planning to spend around $1,000 on an air purifier, the Airmega ProX is arguably the strongest option currently available.
