Blueair filled up the most popular Classic lineup with the flagship of 200 Series, in the name of the Blueair Classic 280i. As one of the best products made by the giant Swedish company, with more than 10,000 customers, we all have high expectations for the Blueair Classic 280i. But will it satisfy us? Let’s find out in today’s Blueair Classic 280i Review.

Other Blueair’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Blueair Classic 280i Price

If you’re looking for Blueair’s ultimate top-end device you will want to opt for the Blueair Classic 480i or Classic 680i, but if you happen to have a much smaller home or want to save a bit of money, this is the best Classic air purifier to go for.

The final flagships of Classic family are out and ready for you to buy, and you heard us right – it’s now a range of flagship air purifiers than just one. Though these devices are not equal to the Pro lineup of Blueair, they are all the smart air purifiers and can be controlled with smart app or voice commands.

Now integrating with a built-in air sensor, the Blueair Classic 280i is ready to push the price point higher, up to $429 in the official Blueair website. It is at least $70 higher than the Blueair Classic 205 and Blueair Sense+. You can find a sweeter deal on Breathe Quality, as low as $365 for a limited time.

The Blueair Classic 280i is joining a mid-range party, where it competes against the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0, Winix XLC, Airmega 250S and Oransi mod. It is also the same price point to look for the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool, Dyson Pure Cool Link or Dyson Pure Cool Tower.

Blueair Classic 280i Design and Size

While many would says it’s not new, the Blueair Classic 280i defies the fact in every department if not design. It’s quite evidently an incremental upgrade over the previous Classic 205 with an integrated air sensor. So far, for this section, you can skip completely if you’ve already been an user of Classic 205.

Yes, the dimensions remain the same, with the height of the Blueair Classic 280i is 21 inches and the width is 17 inches. Still, we are using a solid air purifier with durable steel material. There is only an extra button in the top control panel, nothing more different than the previous model.

Blueair Classic 280i uses a bottom-to-top airflow system concept, with the air intake from the side. This airflow system concept is changed in the next Blueair Classic 480i, but returns in the top-tier Blueair Classic 680i.

Blueair Classic 280i is a bit heavy, with a weight of 22 lbs. Without the casters, it would be difficult for you to move this air purifier from room to room.

Blueair Classic 280i Filters

The Blueair Classic 280i keeps using the same air filter as the Blueair Classic 203 and Blueair Classic 205. With top-class HEPASilent technology, the air filtration system of the Blueair Classic 280i is one of the best things you would want for your home.

  • Particle Filter/ DualProtection Filter – You can choose from the Particle Filter with the power to capture 99.97% of pollutants such as pollen, dust, pet dander, mold spores, viruses and bacteria down to 0.1 microns. Otherwise, you can pay more for DualProtection Filter, which is most likely the combination of True HEPA filter and Activated Carbon Filter.

Blueair has always sold its HEPASilent filtration as the key feature of the lineup, and this time it’s no different. As a combination of both mechanical and electrostatic filtration, the Blueair Classic 280i can trap even the smallest particles down to 0.1 microns.

You can also choose the DualProtection air filter, to improve the efficiency of trapping gaseous pollutants like Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), traffic exhaust, smog, odors, and smoke. It is because of the high quality of its Activated Carbon filter, made of magnesium dioxide and copper oxide impregnation.

The filter of the Blueair Classic 280i is naturally anti-bacterial and 100% recyclable. It’s the type of gimmick we ended up liking – usually.

So what’s exactly new here? I put the Blueair Classic 280i in the same test as the Classic 205 to see the difference. In a room of 200 square feet, I let this air purifier run for 1 hour. The gap between the Classic 280i and Classic 203 seems to be a lot larger than the gap between the Classic 480i and Classic 403.

blueair classic 280i review

With the air filter from the first model of 200 Series, you only need to pay just $49 for the Particle filter of the Blueair Classic 280i. However, the air filter lasts for only 6 months, so the annual filter cost of this air purifier is actually double.

Blueair Classic 280i Room Coverage

It’s no surprise to see a large room coverage on any Blueair air purifier. In fact, this Swedish company can produce the Blueair Pro XL with CADR rating of 1000 cfm. Even for an air purifier designed for small to medium rooms, the Blueair Classic 280i is capable of cleaning a room of 279 square feet, rated by the AHAM.

The ACH of Blueair Classic 280i is 5X. This is just another Blueair air purifier with the great air changes per hour rating, to clean your room every 12 minutes.

The CADR of Blueair Classic 280i is 200 Dust/ 180 Smoke/ 200 Pollen (cfm). There is no difference in CADR rating between this air purifier and the previous Blueair Classic 205.

Blueair Classic 280i Sound

The Blueair doesn’t call its air filtration system HEPASilent for nothing. I found the Blueair Classic 280i, with similar fan power as the predecessor, to keep the noise level at 32 decibels (dB) on lowest speed. Such noise is just like the whisper, and it won’t disturb you while sleeping or working.

On highest speed, the noise level is 56 decibels, which is strangely higher than even the bigger Blueair Classic 480i. You really need to get the Blueair Classic 280i in the 200 Series, because its Smart Sensor can keep the fan speed as low as possible.

Blueair Classic 280i Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is designed to run for a long time to be efficient. Therefore power consumption is always one important criteria when you decide to buy one air purifier.

Blueair Classic 280i deserves to be an Energy Star air purifier, with the rated power as low as 20 watts. However, it consumes too much energy on highest speed, up to 80 watts for an air purifier with average CADR rating of 200 cfm.

For running a Blueair Classic 280i 8 hours per day, you need to pay from $7 to $30 annually.

Blueair Classic 280i Additional Features

If we look at the target customers of the Blueair Classic 280i, they love to enjoy the high-tech life. Blueair Classic 280i is much more a device of future than an ordinary air purifier, so it can connect to Wi-Fi, and be controlled with a Blueair Friend App (available both for iOS and Android). Do you have Amazon Echo? Because you can also use voice commands to control this air purifier.

Of course, everyone just wants a real smart air purifier, one that they can set and forget it. The Smart Sensor is born to help automatically change the fan speed, based on the current air quality status. That’s something you can’t find on the Blueair Classic 205.

Thanks to the smartphone app, you can set the timer to schedule the time off, or activate the Night Mode for bedroom use. Finally, there is a LED indicator for filter replacement, which lets you know when it’s time to change your filter.

Blueair Classic 280i Customer Service

As one of the best air purifier brands, Blueair focuses strongly on customer service. With a lot of local stores and dedicated support via phone and email, you are guaranteed to reach its customer service as soon as possible.

If you need to find a local store of Blueair anywhere in the world, you can use the store locator function on its website. To reach customer service, you can choose between calling 888-258-3247 or emailing info@blueair.com. Customer service is available for you from Monday to Friday, with the exception of U.S. holidays.

Remember only one thing: you need to complete the Product Registration form within 60 days of purchase or register through the Blueair Friend mobile app to secure the 5-year warranty. Otherwise, you only benefit from a 1-year warranty. Moreover, do not attempt to bring the air purifier outside of the United States or Canada, or your warranty will be void immediately. All Blueair warranties are non-transferable.

Blueair air purifiers from the Blue family have only a 2-year warranty from the date of purchase (with valid proof of purchase). One quick reminder: Blueair doesn’t cover warranties from third-party sellers, so buying from Breathe Quality’s deals is highly recommended.

Our verdict

If you are reading this to take a buying decision, you are probably considering to buy the Blueair Classic 280i over the Blueair Classic 205. If you have a heavy budget, you should. Unless you have a bigger house and need the bigger Classic 480i, the Classic 280i can meet most of your demands. Otherwise, perhaps the no-sensor Classic 205 is enough to deal with your everyday air cleaning tasks.
