Other Blueair’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Blueair Classic 205 Price

Though being the little brother, and the most affordable smart air purifier in Classic family, the Blueair Classic 205 is still under the entry mid-range in the market. Like a great many Blueair devices at the moment, this Blueair Classic 205 features an unique and powerful air filtration technology to remove even the particles with size as small as 0.1 microns.

The Classic family has always been about offering good performance at a mid to high-range cost, and this Blueair Classic 205 is no different. The official price starts from $349, and for that, the Blueair Classic 205 is even more expensive than some other brands’ flagships, like the GermGuardian AC9600W or TruSens Z-3000. Other good air purifiers you could consider in this price range is the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 – one masterpiece of modern air purifiers, and the new Levoit EverestAir, Winix XLC and Airmega 250.

If you are looking for a smart air purifier, the Blueair Classic 205 is a good start. However, after the unveiling of the Blueair Sense+ and Blueair Classic 280i, which are admittedly above-average, you can enjoy all these necessary Smart features with nearly the same price.

Blueair Classic 205 Design and Size

As the first one of its smart kind, the Blueair Classic 205 remains the classic design from the first air purifiers. That being said, we will have a durable steel air purifier, with solid built-in body and pure look. We still have the characteristic metal front with Blueair logo and an LED on/off indicator.

The size of this Blueair Classic 205 is a little bit smaller than its brother, with only 21 inches in height and 17 inches in width. Though smaller than the Blueair Classic 405 and Blueair Classic 605, this air purifier is still easy to control while sitting or standing.

We will have a big air intake grill from the back and an air outlet grill on top. This is the original design concept of the Blueair’s air purifiers, to make use of the classic airflow structure from side-to-top. This design concept can help maximize the efficiency of its fan power, and is popular in other air purifier brands in same price range, like the GermGuardian AC9200WCA, Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 or Sharp FP-A80UW.

Also on top of this air purifier, the Blueair Classic 205 features the recognizable digital control panel with easy-to-read LED icons let you see the status of your air purifier’s Wi-Fi connection, operating speed and filter.

Just like the Classic 405, the Blueair Classic 205 doesn’t come with a set of casters. Luckily, this air purifier is only 24 lbs and is lightweight enough to move around your home. However, if you value the weight of the air purifier much, you need to check the lightweight ones like the Blue Pure 411 (also from Blueair), Levoit LV-H132 or Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0.

Blueair Classic 205 Filters

When it comes to the performance and power of an air purifier, we decide based on how many air filters it has and the air filter types are used. Not like any other brands, Blueair uses the same air filter structure for all of its Sense and Classic air purifiers. This will guarantee a top-notch performance for whatever air purifier you choose from this brand, even in the little Blueair Classic 205.

  • Particle Filter/ DualProtection Filter – You can choose from the Particle Filter with the power to capture 99.97% of pollutants such as pollen, dust, pet dander, mold spores, viruses and bacteria down to 0.1 microns. Otherwise, you can pay more for DualProtection Filter, which is most likely the combination of True HEPA filter and Activated Carbon Filter.

This is the same HEPASilent filter being used in the Blueair Classic family. With a combination of both mechanical and electrostatic filtration, the HEPASilent technology can trap even the tiny 0.1 microns airborne particles of pollutants, with an efficiency rate of 99.97%. It is safe to say that the air filtration technology of Blueair is one of the best at the moment. Having a Blueair Classic 205 is a guarantee of clean air in your home.

If you are willing to pay more, you will have the DualProtection filter, which adds an extra layer of Activated Carbon filter. This Activated Carbon filter is made of magnesium dioxide and copper oxide impregnation, which is highly effective against all kinds of common gaseous pollutants like Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), traffic exhaust, smog, odors, and smoke.

Bringing the Blueair Classic 205 into a test is, luckily, one of the easiest tasks for me. There is no doubt for the good performance rating from all of Blueair air purifiers. In this test, I chose the Winix AM90 to compare with my Blueair Classic 205. With Alexa function, the Winix AM90 would be a worthy challenger for our today Blueair Classic 205. The test conditions are simple, running for one full hour in a room of 200 square feet. As the result, Winix AM90 easily passed with a high efficiency of 99.95% for trapping any pollutants as small as 0.3 microns. But, it is amazing that the Blueair Classic 205 also scored this high efficiency of 99.95%. That’s the true power of HEPASilent technology, which even pass the most difficult test.

And don’t forget that all of Blueair Classic air filters are naturally anti-bacterial and 100% recyclable. That’s why in Breathe Quality, we truly value the Blueair brand in terms of high quality and green materials.

Being an air purifier for small room, the Blueair Classic 205 filter is the most affordable in this family to purchase, from $49 for the Particle Filter. The raw cost of this filter is also among the lowest if you compared with other $300 air purifiers, like the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 with $85 or the Winix NK105 with $100. However, the downside of this Blueair Classic 205 filter is the lifetime of 6 months, which translates into 4,380 hours of use. This lifetime is quite shorter than others, especially for a mid-range air purifier.

Blueair Classic 205 Room Coverage

Blueair Classic 205 is ideal for a small room, with a room coverage of 279 square feet. This room coverage is even way smaller than any well-known $200 air purifiers like the Honeywell HPA300 or Coway AP-1512HH. For the price, if you want to deal with larger room, you should check the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 (with 625 square feet) or at least the Oransi OV200 (with 400 square feet).

The ACH of Blueair Classic 205 is 5X. This is the common ACH rating from any devices in Blueair Classic family, which allows this Blueair Classic 205 to clean your room every 12 minutes.

The CADR of Blueair Classic 205 is 200 Dust/ 180 Smoke/ 200 Pollen (cfm). The CADR rating is perfect for its room coverage, and with a high ACH rating as 5X, we believe this Blueair Classic 205 can even clean a room up to 360 square feet in size.

Blueair Classic 205 Sound

Even with the HEPASilent technology, the Blueair Classic 205 is not as silent as expect. This problem is mostly because of the high fan power of this air purifier.

With 3 fan speeds, the Blueair Classic 205 has the same noise level with the bigger Classic 405, which is 32 decibels at the lowest setting. This is higher than most of the silent air purifiers like the Vornado PCO575DC, Airthereal AGH550 or Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0. However, since the library noise level is 40 decibels, the noise level of the Blueair Classic 205 is mostly acceptable in low setting.

At the highest setting, the noise level is even higher than the Blueair Classic 405, at 56 decibels (dB). However, this noise level is just the same level as normal conservation in your home. And if you keep this air purifier mostly in the low speed, I believe that you can run this air purifier at public and quiet spaces like the office or library.

Blueair Classic 205 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is designed to run for a long time to be efficient. Therefore power consumption is always one important criteria when you decide to buy one air purifier.

Using the old technology of HEPASilent, the Blueair Classic 205 has a higher power consumption than others from this brand at lowest setting, with 20 watts. At the highest setting, the power consumption is about 80 watts. If you value the energy-saving air purifier (admit it, everyone does), you should choose other devices from this same brand, like the Blue Pure 211 or Blue Pure 121. Or else, I recommend you to look for the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 – one of the best energy-saving air purifiers for the price.

However, I still need to remind you this Blueair Classic 205 is an Energy Star air purifier, and you should look for a device like this for your home.

For running a Blueair Classic 205 8 hours per day, you only need to pay from $7 to $30 annually. If you mostly run the Blueair Classic 205 in the lowest setting, the cost you need to pay can easily be missed.

Blueair Classic 205 Additional Features

Blueair Classic 205 is a smart air purifier, which means you can connect this device to Wi-Fi and control it easily via a mobile app named Blueair Friend App (available both for iOS and Android). Moreover, if you have Amazon Echo, you can use Alexa to control the Blueair Classic 205 via voice commands.

Other high-end additional features like Night Mode (to reduce the fan speed and stop the light) and Timer are all available in this Blueair Classic 205. In addition, you will not need to note the date of filter replacement, because this air purifier comes with a handy LED indicator to remind you.

But there is no Smart Sensor (which help you automatically adjust the fan speed according to the air quality) in this Blueair Classic 205, which is not available in Classic 405 and Classic 605, either. For a $300 air purifier, you will not believe that Blueair can’t integrate the air sensor into its devices. This feature is more or less must-have, especially when other competitors have done it so well. We can tell a few names like the Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0, Levoit LV-H134 or even the $200 ones like the Airmega 200M or GermGuardian CDAP5500BCA.

If you really want an air quality monitor for the Blueair Classic 205, you need an additional Blueair Aware Indoor Air Quality Monitor. However, the air quality monitor only alert you, and it can’t adjust the fan power of the Blueair Classic 205 automatically. So if you didn’t own the Classic 205, I recommend you to look for the Blueair Classic 280i.

Otherwise, you only benefit from a 1-year warranty. Moreover, do not attempt to bring the air purifier outside of the United States or Canada, or your warranty will be void immediately. Blueair air purifiers from the Blue family have only a 2-year warranty from the date of purchase (with valid proof of purchase). One quick reminder: Blueair doesn’t cover warranties from third-party sellers, so buying from Breathe Quality’s deals is highly recommended.

Our verdict

A good and smart air purifier, but the price is high for a small room device. Blueair Classic 205 is also old and noisy, which makes customers prefer the Blueair Classic 280i much more, with better high-end features.
