Blueair’s old Classic family flagship is still an absolute looker and it also won the Best Buy award from Which? – one of the UK’s largest independent consumer organizations, even though the Classic 605 and the Classic 480i is now available. Read our Blueair Classic 405 Review to see why you still have to buy this air purifier instead of bigger machines.

Blueair Classic 405 Price
If you’re after a modern air purifier with a stunning performance, Blueair Classic 405 is for you. Being the older flagship of Blueair Classic family, this Blueair Classic 405 is not a cheap air purifier.
So to have one Best Buy award air purifier, you need to pay for at least $549. At the time of writing, there is not any discount deals for this air purifier. In the same mid-range level, you can pay more for a larger room coverage machine like Rabbit Air MinusA2. Other notable air purifier brands with the same price range are Alen with their Alen BreatheSmart FIT50, or Sharp with the latest humidifying air purifier Sharp KC-860U.

Blueair Classic 405 Design and Size
The Blueair Classic 405 doesn’t feel as “classy” as the Classic 605, but it is still the classic steel design from the bulky air purifiers. It adds a few tweaks in the air grills from previous model to make it more viable in purifying the air, and the 23-inch in height is a nice compromise between the 21-inch Classic 205 and 26-inch Classic 605. It looks very much like a Classic 605 without the casters.
There are air grills from both sides of this Blueair Classic 405, with an intake air grill and an outlet one, meaning a classic back-to-front air flow system. But there is no disadvantage here, thanks to its smart design concept, you can easily put this Blueair Classic 405 anywhere without worrying of performance rating reduction. However, this air flow system is mostly used in lower-range devices. Back to a $500 air purifier, it mostly makes use of the common bottom-to-top or side-to-top air flow, so the clean air will direct to the users.
On top of this air purifier is a digital control panel with easy-to-read LED icons to let you read the status of your air purifier’s Wifi connection, operating speed and filter. There is no outlet grill on top of this Blueair Classic 405 like featuring in previous model, for example Classic 203 Slim and Blueair Classic 205.
Blueair Classic 405 weighs around 33 lbs, which is much bigger and less mobility than most of common air purifiers in the same price range. To move this air purifier is not an easy task, especially with the dumb handles and no casters. For the price, the Alen BreatheSmart FIT50 is only 16 lbs and the Sharp KC-860U is 25 lbs, which is much lighter than our Blueair Classic 405.
P/s: If you don’t need the Smart features, you can switch to the Blueair Classic 403, which has the same powerful as the Smart Blueair Classic 405.

Blueair Classic 405 Filters
Being rated as Best in Test by the independent Nordic test institute Testfakta, Blueair Classic 405 is no ordinary air purifier. This Blueair Classic 405 will feature an unique but powerful air filter which is exclusively for the Classic family of Blueair brand alone.
- Particle Filter/ SmokeStop Filter – You can choose from the Particle Filter with the power to capture 99.97% of pollutants such as pollen, dust, pet dander, mold spores, viruses and bacteria down to 0.1 microns. Otherwise, you can pay more for SmokeStop Filter, which is most likely the combination of True HEPA filter and Activated Carbon Filter.
Just like the flagship Classic 605, Blueair Classic 405 possess the same high performance from HEPASilent technology, to combine both mechanical and electrostatic filtration and slay even the as small as 0.1 microns airborne particles of contaminants. The smallest size of trapped ultra-particles is what proves the performance of this Blueair Classic 405 the best, being one of the most powerful air purifiers in the world.
Also, you can pay more for the SmokeStop filter and have an extra layer of Activated Carbon filter. This Activated Carbon filter is made of magnesium dioxide and copper oxide impregnation, which is highly effective against all kinds of common gaseous pollutants like Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), traffic exhaust, smog, odors, and smoke.
Most importantly, all of Blueair Classic air filters are naturally anti-bacterial and 100% recyclable.
But that is just the theory, and I’d like to put everything into a practical performance test. To do that, I put the Blueair Classic 405, the Alen BreatheSmart FIT50 and even the $649 Blueair Pro M into a room of 300 sq ft. I let them run in a full hour, to guarantee the air purifiers have enough time for cleaning tasks. It is no surprise that both the high-end devices of Blueair can trap 99.97% any airborne allergens as small as 0.3 microns. The Alen BreatheSmart FIT50’s result is only 95%.
As the medium version in Classic family, Blueair Classic 405 filter is more affordable than the big Classic 605, with only $59. This filter replacement cost is also among the lowest possible for this mid-range segment, while the filter cost of Alen BreatheSmart is about $89, or the Medical-grade filter of Austin Air HealthMate is $240. However, it still lasts for only 6 months, and even with cheap cost, you will not be happy for any annual filter replacement.

Blueair Classic 405 Room Coverage
The medium size of Blueair Classic family targets straight to the medium and large room coverage. This air purifier can cover for an area up to 434 sq ft with no difficulty. For the price, you can target much larger room coverage if you have an Alen BreatheSmart FIT50 or Alen BreatheSmart (with 900 sq ft and 1100 sq ft, respectively). Another US brand you can rely on is the Austin Air HealthMate, with a huge room coverage of 1500 sq ft.
The ACH of Blueair Classic 405 is 5X. Any room coverage specs from Blueair brands are not bluffing, mainly because their air purifiers can clean a room once every 12 minutes.
The CADR of Blueair Classic 405 is 300 Dust/ 280 Smoke/ 300 Pollen (cfm). However, CADR rating is not the criteria to decide the performance of one air purifier, only to check the power of its fan. And the CADR rating of Blueair Pro M suits perfectly for its room coverage. If you still consider CADR rating as one essential criteria to decide an air purifier, you should be happy because Blueair Classic 405 CADR rating is one of the best for the price, and can easily beat the Alen FIT50 with only 220 cfm.

Blueair Classic 405 Sound
Thanks to the HEPASilent technology, the Blueair Classic 405 as quiet as a mouse. This is mainly because this technology (from the air filter) can reduce the fan power while still maintain the high CADR rating.
For a 3-fan-speed air purifier like Blueair Classic 405, the noise level at the lowest setting is only 32 db, which is still lower than library noise level. Compared with others in the same price range, Blueair Classic 405 is one of the lowest available.
At the highest setting, Blueair Classic 405 only runs with 52 db, and is still better than the bigger brother Classic 605 a lot. If you want to run this Blueair Classic 405 for your bedroom or your office, it is highly recommended.

Blueair Classic 405 Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.
The Blueair Classic 405’s power consumption continues to be one of the best for large room air purifiers at the moment.
With HEPASilent technology, the power consumption of this air purifier can be as low as 15W. At highest setting, the power consumption is about 90W, which is fairly high but not sky-high. If you need an energy-saving air purifier (the dream of everyone), Blueair Classic 405 is the right one for you.
For running a Blueair Classic 405 8 hours per day, you only need to pay from $5 to $32 annually.

Blueair Classic 405 Additional Features
Blueair Classic 405 is a smart air purifier, which means you can connect this device to Wifi and control it easily via a mobile app named Blueair Friend App (available both for iOS and Android). Moreover, if you have Amazon Echo, you can use Alexa to control Blueair Classic 405 via voice commands.
Other high-end additional features like Night Mode (to reduce the fan speed and stop the light) and Timer are all available in this Blueair Classic 405. In addition, you will not need to note the date of filter replacement, because this air purifier comes with a handy LED indicator to remind you.
However, the Blueair Classic 405 has a very weird weakness. It doesn’t have a built-in air sensor, so it can’t detect the air quality in your room. To fix this weakness, Blueair has released a model named Classic 480i, of course with some charged fee.
Blueair Classic 405 Customer Service
As one of the best recommended air purifier brands in 2019, Blueair focuses strongly on the customer service. With a lot of local stores and a dedicated supports from both phone and email, you are guaranteed to reach them as soon as possible.
If you need to find a local store of Blueair in all over the world, you can use the store locator function of their website. They will be available for you from Monday to Friday, with the exceptions of U.S holidays.
Remember only one thing, you need to complete the Product Registration form within 60 days of purchase or register through the Blueair Friend mobile app to secure the 5-year warranty. Otherwise, you only benefit from 1-year warranty. Moreover, do not attempt to bring the air purifier outside of the United States or Canada, or your warranty will be void immediately.
Being recommended by the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association, this Blueair Classic 405 has just raised the bar for every other medium to large room air purifiers. However, if you can afford the price, you should look for other great performers, like Breathe Quality’s best air purifier – the Rabbit Air MinusA2.
- Cleaning Power
- Power Consumption
Still an excellent air purifier with a great air filtration system, smart features and amazing noise level. It’s not the Blueair Classic flagship anymore, but don’t let that put you off.
