As a Swedish air purifier for 20 years, Blueair has expanded its market in more than 60 countries. There aren’t many air purifiers on the market can be quite like the Blueair Classic 605. It’s unashamedly huge, seriously expensive, and jams pretty much every high-end feature into a surprisingly air purifier machine. It’s closest competitor is the IQAir HealthPro Plus and others in Blueair Pro family. Heading on our Blueair Classic 605 Review to decide if this air purifier is your next investment or not.

Other Blueair’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Blueair Classic 605 Price

The Blueair Classic 605, even now, lives up to “the next big thing” slogan we so often hear from Blueair. It has a ridiculous size, powerful fan, a top-notch performance rating and an equally out-size price, which has not fallen since launch.

Just how big is the Blueair Classic 605? You’re looking at a 26-inch height that far and away makes it one of the best big high-end air purifier you can buy – if you can handle it. The “smaller” 23-inch Classic 405 and Classic 480i exist if you can’t, or if you want something even bigger with a handy stylus, there’s the Blueair Pro L or Blueair Pro XL.

Being the flagship of the Blueair Classic family (besides the Blueair Classic 680i), the Blueair Classic 605 is a much better air purifier than its brother – the Classic 405. That being said, this air purifier might just be worth that $829 price tag.

Of course, this is not the only exciting air purifier in high range segment, but there is not many competition. The Rabbit Air MinusA2, Airmega Icon and Honeywell HPA600B provide a better price, but with a huge reduction in fan power and CADR rating. The Austin Air HealthMate Plus and Rabbit Air A3 arguably do more with a medical-grade True HEPA filter, but also with a much less fan power. I bet that the most suitable challengers to the Blueair Classic 605 at the moment are the Medify MA-125 and Alen BreatheSmart 75i, with a large room coverage of up to 1300 square feet.

Blueair Classic 605 Design and Size

If you’ve seen the Classic 405, then you will feel the design of the Blueair Classic 605 with the addition of four casters. Blueair, on the other hand, has released a new air purifier with a completely different design. Blueair Classic 605 is the first with a three-dimensional air interaction (from the bottom and two sides). To clarify, the Blueair Classic 605 has one air input and one air output grill on each side of the air purifier. As a result, any polluted air inhaled from any direction will be released fresh from the same direction.

In addition, from the top and bottom of this Blueair Classic 605 are the air output and input, respectively. This unrivaled design optimizes the airflow you have with this air purifier, which is by any means the best so far. Wherever you put this Blueair Classic 605, you will have fresh air directed at you.

Most importantly, I must emphasize that no other air purifiers could adopt this look completely with such highly engineered perfection. With this unique design, it increases the reaction level of this air purifier to any impurities. In fact, the only major concern I have is that this smart design is limited to the Blueair Classic 605, not other models in this brand’s other families. So if you opt for a lower-budget air purifier with the same design, it is unfortunate that you can’t find one.

With a full steel body, this air purifier weighs 35 lbs and is bigger than most of common air purifiers from other brands. If you are looking for a lighter air purifier in the same price range, the Airmega 400S is only 24.7 lbs and the Alen BreatheSmart 75i is even 21 lbs. But with a necessary installation of 4 casters, I am in love with this Blueair Classic 605 more.

Blueair Classic 605 Filters

I feel that the following words have been present in every high-range Blueair air purifier review I’ve ever written: “Blueair Classic 605 is a very powerful air purifier.” As the most important criteria to decide an air purifier’s power, we need to test the performance rating of its air filters and check the air filter types. This Blueair Classic 605 only offers three sets of the same air filter as below.

  • Particle Filter/ DualProtection Filter – You can choose from the Particle Filter with the power to capture 99.97% of pollutants such as pollen, dust, pet dander, mold spores, viruses and bacteria down to 0.1 microns. Otherwise, you can pay more for DualProtection Filter, which is most likely the combination of True HEPA filter and Activated Carbon Filter.

You have two options for this Blueair Classic 605’s air filter. The more affordable option is a typical Blueair particle filter with thermally bonded fibers containing polypropylene and polyethylene. This air filter is free of chemicals and naturally anti-bacterial. And thanks to the unique HEPASilent technology (an advanced combination of both mechanical and electrostatic filtration), Blueair Classic 605 can capture even the tiny 0.1 microns of airborne pollutants. This is the most efficient HEPA filter for the money.

If you are willing to pay more, you will have a Dual-Protection filter, a Particle version with an Activated Carbon filter, and a Particle version with a layer of Activated Carbon filter. The activated carbon is composed of magnesium dioxide and copper oxide impregnation. In short, the Blueair Classic 605’s DualProtection filter is one of the highest-quality air filters on the market, being 100% recyclable.

Do you know one thing? It is really difficult to set up a test performance for the high-end air purifiers. The result will always be the upper limit of HEPA filtration technology, and to review a high-range unit, you can’t just only look at the filtration result. In this high-end test, luckily, I have had the Alen BreatheSmart 75i, IQAir HealthPro Compact and of course, our Blueair Classic 605 to have a comparison. I wished that I didn’t return the Airmega 400S, but 2 samples are quite enough for a test.

With lots of fan power, the Blueair Classic 605 is the clear winner, having the highest efficiency of trapping 99.97% all particles as small as 0.3 microns in the air. The IQAir HealthPro Compact  secured an amazing efficiency of 99.95%, while Alen BreatheSmart 75i dropped to only 99.9%.

Also, in this high-range segment, the filter cost of this Blueair Classic 605 is really low, from $75 for a set of Particle filter. Compared with the cost of total $139 from the Alen BreatheSmart 75i or $129 from the Airmega 400S, we will be happier with this air purifier. Only one big issue, with only 6 months for this air filter to last, the cost to maintain this powerful machine still can cause enough headache to you.

Blueair Classic 605 Room Coverage

As one of our best large room air purifiers, this Blueair Classic 605 is a true beast with huge room coverage. My Blueair Classic 605 can cover an area up to 775 square feet with ease. While the room coverage is still smaller than other high-range air purifiers, like the Alen BreatheSmart 75i (with 1300 square feet) or the Airmega 400S (with 1560 square feet), this Blueair Classic 605 still can beat them all because of the high ACH and CADR rating.

The ACH of Blueair Classic 605 is a massive 5X rating. All air purifiers manufactured from Blueair company can exchange air in the room coverage 5 times per hour.

The CADR of Blueair Classic 605 is also one of the most impressive with 400 Dust/ 450 Smoke/ 450 Pollen (cfm). In real-world use, this air purifier can clean even a 1000-sq-ft room with no problem. I must confirm that no air purifier from any brands could compete with the Blueair Classic 605 in the same price range.

Blueair Classic 605 Sound

For the best part, all products from Blueair are quiet thanks to the HEPASilent technology. This technology can greatly reduce the noise the fan made in the lowest setting. However, it can’t reduce the noise from a large room air purifier like the Blueair Classic 605.

At the lowest setting, the Blueair Classic 605 runs HEPASilent mode, with only 33 decibels (dB), which is even lower than library noise level. This lowest noise level of the Blueair Classic 605 is still higher than most mid-range air purifiers like the Rabbit Air MinusA2 or a high-range like the Austin Air HealthMate Plus.

At the highest setting, the noise level can be as high as 62 decibels (dB). For a classic 3-fan-speed air purifier, the noise level is a bit louder than normal ones. If you plan to have a Blueair Classic 605 in quiet places, you should think again. I suggest you to swap for the Blueair Pro L, with same power and better quiet than its Classic family’s brother.

Blueair Classic 605 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.

As one of the most criteria when deciding to buy an air purifier, power consumption is what Blueair air purifiers always surpass other competitors.

Blueair Classic 605 with HEPASilent technology can reduce the power consumption to as low as 15 watts. Unfortunately, once you switch to the highest setting, the power consumption will go to the level of 100 watts. With an average power consumption of 60 watts, the Blueair Classic 605 is really energy-efficient with all its power and features, gaining it the honored Energy Star rating. If you want a much lower energy consumption device, you should go for the Alen BreatheSmart 75i, with only 45 watts at highest setting.

For running a Blueair Classic 605 8 hours per day, you only need to pay from $21 to $36 annually, depending on which mode you run the most.

Blueair Classic 605 Additional Features

Without the remote control to change fan speed like other classic machines, the Blueair Classic 605 is a real smart air purifier for modern era. Whether or not Alexa Control is a viable alternative to remote control will likely be down to your personal taste. Personally, I prefer it, it’s faster and works in a wider range of situations. For other folks who are used to use a remote control, you can control your air purifier via a Blueair Friend App (available both for iOS and Android).

As a high-end machine targeting at home use, the Blueair Classic 605 makes use of a Night mode. This mode will automatically reduce the fan speed to lowest setting, and stop any light from this air purifier. Even if you need some source of light, you can easily adjust the LED intensity of the light on the front of the Blueair Classic 605. However, the Blueair Classic 605 doesn’t come with a handy air sensor, so it can’t automatically adjust the fan speed according to the current air quality in your home. It is really a weakness when all the competitors are doing so well with the handy Smart Sensor, like the Honeywell HPA600B or Rabbit Air MinusA2.

If you really want an air quality monitor for the Blueair Classic 605, you need an additional Blueair Aware Indoor Air Quality Monitor. However, the air quality monitor only alert you, and it can’t adjust the fan power of the Blueair Classic 605 automatically. To get such feature, you need the Blueair Classic 680i.

Other common additional features like Timer and LED filter replacement indicator also feature on any air purifiers under Blueair Classic family.
