Blueair uses the Blue Signature series to mark the brand’s most deliberate departure from conventional air purifier design: a cylindrical, furniture-grade lineup built to double as a functioning side table while delivering great performance. It’s the new idea, and with this Blue Signature SP3i review, we will figure out if this air purifier is worth buying over the Blue Pure 211i Max at the same price range.

Other Blueair’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Blue Signature Medium SP3i Max Price

It’s pretty reasonable for an air purifier brand to stick with its existing designs and focus on what it does best. But Blueair is always introducing new designs, and over the years we’ve seen many models discontinued, even near-perfect ones like the Blueair HealthProtect 7770i, to make way for newer products. The Blue Signature Medium marks the beginning of a new air purifier-furniture combo concept, as it is designed to function as a tabletop as well.

We consider OdorFence to be the biggest innovation. It’s a clever way to replace the thin impregnated carbon layer used before, while retaining most of the HEPASilent electrostatic-plus-mechanical technology that has made Blueair’s particle removal so consistently effective. It also makes the Blue Signature Medium feel more affordable when compared to air purifiers from other companies that charge $500 or more for a better Activated carbon filter.

For these new features, the Blue Signature Medium SP3i launches at $299, despite offering similar performance to the medium-sized Blue Pure 311i Max. It costs as much as the Blue Pure 211i Max, and as a result, it sits in the same category as the GermGuardian AC3200, Airmega 350 or Levoit Core 600S.

You can check our Breathe Quality deal for a better 15% OFF. The Blue Signature SP3i is only $254 after the price reduction, though it’s still higher than the 211i Max.

Blue Signature Medium SP3i Design and Size

The first thing you will notice about the Blue Signature Medium SP3i is its newer design, which distinguishes it from the traditional Blue family. It uses a side air outlet with a 360-degree design to distribute air around the room, instead of relying solely on a top outlet like the Blue Pure 211i Max. You can see it from the budget Blueair Mini Restful, too, which is only released this year.

It is a thoughtful design for an air purifier that wants to function as a table. You can place your belongings on top, and the height of the Blue Signature Medium SP3i is enough to direct airflow toward the user, provided you use a standard armchair in your home. The Blue Signature Medium is slightly taller than its larger sibling, the Blue Signature Large, at 19.3 inches in height. However, it is a bit slimmer, with a diameter of 11.7 inches.

Remember that you can increase the height slightly with accessories like the wooden legs or chrome disc. These are available on the Blueair website, but you need to purchase them separately, starting at $69. I don’t think the wooden legs are worth the money, though they are intuitive to install, because they are simply too expensive.

Blue Signature SP3i review

Many people will argue that 19.3 inches is too tall for this air purifier, and they would prefer a way to reduce the height rather than increase it. For us, that’s true, and we actually prefer the design of the Blue Signature Large, which is shorter.

Other than that, it is the same Blue air purifier with removable pre-filter, cylindrical design and top control. The top control is quite special because it can sense your motion, and the real-time interactive display is easy to read. Bravo, Blueair.

At 9.5 lbs, the Blue Signature Medium is a bit heavier than the Blue Pure 311i Max. It is supposed to be your table, so heavy weight is necessary.

Blue Signature Medium SP3i Filters

We check the performance of one air purifiers based on its air filters’ quality and material, as well as the number of air filter types in the testing device. The Blue Signature Medium will use the similar 3-stage air cleaning system from the Blue family.

  1. Pre-filter – It’s worth noting that the fabric pre-filter of the Blue Signature Medium is outside the air purifier. This is one great advantage of this pre-filter, because you can easily check its status and vacuum or wipe the contaminants out immediately.
  2. Particle filter – Instead of using a True HEPA filter, the Blue Signature Medium runs a polypropylene fiber filter to help capture 99.97% of all allergens as small as 0.3 microns like dust, dust mites, pet dander, pollen and fungi (HEPASilent technology).
  3. Activated Carbon filter – The Activated Carbon filter is added inside the Particle filter and effective against smoke, odors, gases and VOCs. It uses enzymes and minerals to break down odors molecules, instead of storing them.

There are two things you should notice about the Blue Signature Medium compared to the rest of the Blue family. First, it uses a clasp-designed air filter, which improves seal integrity and reduces air bypass inside the purifier. This change is mainly due to the side outlet design, so it’s not something you need to worry much about.

Second, besides the common HEPASilent technology, Blueair introduces a new activated carbon filter that uses bio-based enzymes and minerals. Called OdorFence, this filter includes an enzymatic stage that is effective at breaking down common VOCs like acetaldehyde (CH₃CHO). Zeolites are used as the final layer, and they are highly effective at adsorbing chemicals. Normally, this technology is found only in high-end air purifiers, but the Blue Signature Medium uses it as well, though to a lesser extent.

We use the same test for the Blue Signature Medium SP3i as the Blue Pure 211i Max, in a closed space of 300 square feet, after 1 hour. Our today air purifier is as good as the Winix 9800, but is slightly behind the Medify MA-50 and Levoit Core 600S. However, the result is good, and the Blue Signature Medium SP3i is one of the best air purifiers at its price range.

Blue Signature SP3i review

The Blue Signature Medium SP3i uses a different filter from the Blue Pure Max series, but the filter cost is similar at $69. However, the actual annual filter cost is lower, because Blueair recommends to replace the filter after 1 year.

Blue Signature Medium SP3i Room Coverage

The Blue Signature Medium SP3i is verified by the AHAM, to run mainly for rooms up to 498 square feet. Such performance is similar to the Blue Pure 311i Max.

The ACH of the Blue Signature Medium SP3i is 5X. In the suggested room size, the unit exchanges air 5 times per hour.

The CADR of the Blue Signature Medium SP3i is 309 Dust/ 321 Smoke/ 330 Pollen (cfm). It isn’t as good as the Blue Pure 211i Max, but don’t underestimate the power of the Blue Signature Medium SP3i.

Blue Signature Medium SP3i Sound

Putting side-by-side, the Blue Signature Medium SP3i runs a bit quieter than the Blue Pure 311i Max. The difference isn’t noticeable, but it is definite there. We measure the lowest noise level of the Blue Signature Medium at only 19 decibels (dB), which is below the noise level of rustling leaves.

On the highest speed, the noise level of the Blue Signature Medium SP3i is only 54 decibels. Running this air purifier isn’t as loud as the Blue Pure 211i Max, and we feel it is perhaps the best air purifier for bedroom at this size.

Blue Signature Medium SP3i Max Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.

The Blue Signature Medium SP3i is an Energy Star air purifier, with an impressive performance per watt, as its power consumption is only 31 watts. It reminds us of the past, when an air purifier with this level of fan power would require 120 watts or more.

So if you use the Blue Signature Medium for your house, 8 hours per day, you only need to pay $13.6.

Blue Signature Medium SP3i Additional Features

The Blue Signature Medium is built on a strong base, the Blueair base. It is supported by a smartphone app by nature, so the Wi-Fi capability is like bread and butter. Through this app, you can set Child lock function, turn on Night mode, or simply remote control the air purifier. But the Blue Signature Medium lacks voice control, unlike the Blue Pure 311i Max.

Instead, there are two improvements for the Blue Signature Medium. The Wave-to-wake feature is a simple motion sensor in the top display. In Blueair app, we have the AirSense, a function to periodic refresh air.

The Blue Signature Medium SP3i has both smoke and dust air sensors, just like the Blue Pure Max series. It can activate Auto Mode to automatically adjust the fan speed based on the surrounding pollutants.

Finally, the RealTrack filter life prediction is available on the Blue Signature Medium. It is a smart, usage-based filter replacement alert exclusive to newer Blueair air purifiers.

Our verdict

From the Blue Pure 511i Max, we know that Blueair is now focused on making top-ranked air purifiers. One thing is certain: the Blue Signature Medium SP3i has lower performance than the Blue Pure 211i Max. Still, it earns a top score at Breathe Quality, so don’t assume it is suitable only for medium-sized rooms.
