And it’s that final part that’s the Blue Pure 121’s only major issue. It comes with a hefty price tag of $439, putting it in direct competition with some very strong alternatives. In another family of Blueair, the Blueair Classic 280i provides the same powerful filtration technology with some tricky smart features. Though the Classic 205 doesn’t have much power for the price, in a modern day, using a Smart air purifier is always more likely than a classic one.

Other competitors with strong foundation in air purification industry are the GermGuardian AC9600W, Airmega Icon, Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0, Winix XLC and Levoit EverestAir. They provide a variety of unique features at a reasonable price to be settled in your home. But for the design, the top dog that has the most potential to compete with the strong power of the Blue Pure 121 is the Levoit LV-H134.

Blue Pure 121 Design and Size

Being a flagship of this family, the Blue Pure 121 is actually the first of its kind. Apparently, the Blue Pure 121 is just a super-sized Blue Pure 211, at least that’s exactly what it looks like. There’s a more to it than that when you dig a little deeper, though. The big differentiator is that the huge 28-inch in height (the Blue Pure 211 is only 20 inches). Apart from that, it is still 13 inches in both width and depth, making the Blue Pure 121 not a very different proposition to its little sibling.

Blueair is rarely bold with its color choices for Blue family, and with this Blue Pure 121 things are still remaining. You will choose from a variety of colors for your back-to-front fabric pre-filter: from the Buff Yellow, Crystal Pink, Diva Blue, Dark Shadow and Lunar Rock. Our testing unit in this review is a Dark Shadow edition, which is a truly mysterious black color.

With that huge spandex fabric pre-filter, you can imagine a huge 360° intake air grill under it. This design concept is the most proper to utilize the efficiency of the Blue Pure 121’s fan power. The airflow will direct the clean air to the top of this air purifier. A simple and powerful airflow system, which is mimicked by other competitors like the tower air purifier of Levoit brand – the Levoit LV-H133. This Levoit air purifier is also considered as the closest competitor to the Blue Pure 211.

The Blue Pure 121 is well balanced and light enough too at just 18 lbs. You’ll happily move it around your home without much effort like other Blueair air purifiers, for example the Blueair Classic 405 (33 lbs) or Blueair Pro M (24 lbs). The Levoit LV-H133 is also heavier with a weight of 20.9 lbs.

Blue Pure 121 Filters

As the most important criteria to decide one air purifier’s power, we check the performance rating due to the materials of the filters and the air filter types are used. As the flagship of one family in the well-known Blueair brand, the Blue Pure 121 delivers a powerful 3-stage air cleaning system as below.

1. Pre-filter – The fabric pre-filter of the Blue Pure 121 is outside the air purifier and can catch the large particles. This pre-filter is washable or vacuumable.
2. Particle filter – Instead of using a True HEPA filter, the Blue Pure 121 uses a polypropylene fibers filter to help capture 99.97% of all allergens as small as 0.3 microns like dust, dust mites, pet dander, pollen and fungi (HEPA technology).
3. Activated Carbon Filter – The Activated Carbon filter is added inside the Particle filter and effective against smoke, odors, gases and VOCs.

Like any other air purifiers in Blue family, the Blue Pure 121 doesn’t use a True HEPA filter. Instead, to remove allergens, pollen, mold spores and other irritants, the Blue Pure 121 makes use of its Particle Filter and HEPASilent technology, to combine both mechanical and electrostatic filtration. With a simple air filtration like that, the Blue Pure 121 can even match the Levoit LV-H133 with True HEPA filter in terms of air filtration performance.

The keywords using in this Blue Pure 121 is “simple”, and “strong”. The Blue Pure 121 operates at a pace no air purifier could do. To test the performance and compare with others, I put the new Levoit LV-H134, Sharp FP-A80UW and GermGuardian AC9400W in one room of 400 square feet. After one hour of running, the final result is interesting. Blue Pure 121 was the best performer with high efficiency of 99.92% of removing any particles down to 0.3 microns. The Sharp FP-A80UW only secured the runner-up with 99.91%, while both the GermGuardian AC9400W and Levoit LV-H134 were in third place with 99.9%. That’s how strong this Blue Pure 121 is.

Most importantly, the polypropylene fibers in this air purifier are free of chemicals and naturally anti-bacterial. Also, this particle filter is 100% recyclable.

Only one downside, the filter cost of the Blue Pure 121 is $109, which is higher than most of proper True HEPA filters from other brands. A filter of the Coway AP-1512HH is about $45, or a pack of 3 filters for the Honeywell HPA300 costs only $68. Blue Pure 121 Room Coverage

As the most powerful air purifier in one family of Blueair, the Blue Pure 121 can also cover the largest space of polluted air. For our testing unit, the room coverage of the Blue Pure 121 is up to 620 square feet. This room coverage is no doubt the largest among air purifiers in $350 price range. The Rabbit Air BioGS 2.0 can cover 625 square feet, but with a more expensive cost. Others like the Winix WAC9500 and Levoit LV-H133 can’t cover more than 550 square feet.

The ACH of Blue Pure 121 is 5X. Blueair always highlight its air purifiers’ power through an impeccable fan. 5X is among the highest ACH rating, which results in a frequency of 5 times air changes per hour.

The CADR of Blue Pure 121 is 400 Dust/ 400 Smoke/ 400 Pollen (cfm). This CADR rating is truly impressive, which brings the fan power of this $350 air purifier to equal with other high-range machines, like the Austin Air HealthMate Plus (with 400 cfm CADR) or Oransi Erik 650A (with 413 cfm CADR).

Blue Pure 121 Sound

Even with stable and helpful technology like HEPASilent to reduce the noise level, the Blue Pure 121 is still an air purifier for large rooms with a huge fan. Generally, an air purifier with such fan power can’t be quiet, especially at the highest setting.

However, this air purifier still hold a common noise level from 31 to 56 decibels (dB) like its little brother – the Blue Pure 211. What you gain with an unrivaled fan power only exchange for an acceptable noise level. At the lowest setting, the noise level of 31 decibels is only half the noise level of library (which is truly quiet). Even if you try to run this Blue Pure 121 at the highest setting, the noise level is just like normal conservation at home. For some people, this is just the white noise and can help them sleep easily.

We highly recommended to use it in a large public places like your offices or dorms.

Blue Pure 121 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is designed to run for a long time to be efficient. Therefore power consumption is always one important criteria when you decide to buy one air purifier.

Blue Pure 121 Additional Features

One thing never change in Blue family of Blueair brand, there is no additional features for this one-button air purifier. You can’t expect any additional features in this Blue Pure 121, and with that said, no air sensor or timer. That’s how the Blueair calls “simple”.

To compensate for a powerful fan and high-quality materials, it’s inevitable to lose some smart features. If you are looking for a smart air purifier, you need to cut off some fan power, like in this TruSens Z-3000. Alternatively, a Vornado PCO575DC with half the CADR rating but more useful features.
