Blueair Classic 403 incorporates the award-winning Blueair Classic 405‘s high-end performance into a simple, non-smart device. However, the starting price isn’t lower than its smart brother, so where can you get a more proper air purifier at the right price? Let’s find out in our Blueair Classic 403 Review.
UPDATED: The Blueair HealthProtect 7470i and HealthProtect 7770i are the best air purifiers you can get from this Swedish brand right now. Additionally, as the Blueair Classic 403 appears to be fully sold out, I recommend properly checking our deal before reading this review, as the review itself is pretty lengthy.

Blueair is a monument in the air purifier industry, with expertise that matches even top-tier companies like IQAir or Coway. While the Blueair Classic 403 is a forgotten air purifier at the moment, as its brother, the Blueair Classic 405, keeps the same price tag for more high-end smart features, the device is worth looking for. But why? Let’s search for the answer in our Blueair Classic 403 review.
Other Blueair’s Air Purifier Reviews:
Blueair Classic 403 Price
The Blueair Classic 400 Series actually starts with the Blueair Classic 403 first, like how the company brings the Blueair Classic 203 into the 200 Series. This is the foundation for a new audience with a higher demand for heavy air purifiers.
The 400 Series now seems complete with the addition of the Blueair Classic 405 and Blueair Classic 480i, which were Amazon’s Choice for several years. The Blueair Classic 405 is even awarded as Best Buy’s air purifier, as well as being recommended by both the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association and Today’s Parent. Apparently, there is no reason to buy the old Blueair Classic 403.
And maybe Blueair doesn’t want to clear the stock for the classic air purifier, as it doesn’t reduce the price of the Blueair Classic 403. It is still $549, a price tag that rivals the most high-end air purifiers at the moment, like the Rabbit Air MinusA2, Dyson TP04, Airmega Icon or Winix XLC. While other big brands start adding more smart features into their devices, the Blueair Classic 403 remains “classic”, while it has no power to match the industrial machines like Austin Air HealthMate or Medify MA-112.
Finally, the Blueair Classic 403 has been discontinued.
Another Europe air purifier brand, Dyson has reduced the price of its basic Dyson Pure Cool Tower and Dyson Pure Cool Link long time ago, saving place for the flagships. So why Blueair can’t do the same for this Blueair Classic 403?

Blueair Classic 403 Design and Size
Blueair chose a giant form of the previous Blueair Classic 205 to apply into the 400 Series, giving the Blueair Classic 403 an air purifier made of steel. I feel a certain heft as this air purifier is 23 inches in height and 20 inches in width, just like the Blueair Classic 405.
In fact, for the design section, you won’t find any different between these two in 400 Series. The Blueair Classic 403 only keeps the knob, meaning it isn’t a smart version, from the old Blueair Classic 203.
So far, we have the back-to-front airflow system concept from the first Blueair Classic air purifier, which is the winner of Excellent Swedish Design award, as well as a permanent spot in Stockholm’s National Design Museum.

For the weight, the Blueair Classic 403 is 33 lbs. This is truly a heavy air purifier, so you shouldn’t move it around your home often.

Blueair Classic 403 Filters
Just like all Blueair Classic air purifiers, the Blueair Classic 403 uses only one air filter for trapping the allergens. However, don’t make light of its performance.
- Particle Filter/ DualProtection Filter – You can choose from the Particle Filter with the power to capture 99.97% of pollutants such as pollen, dust, pet dander, mold spores, viruses and bacteria down to 0.1 microns. Otherwise, you can pay more for DualProtection Filter, which is most likely the combination of a True HEPA filter and an Activated Carbon Filter.
HEPASilent technology is the exclusive air filtration method for Blueair air purifiers that combines both mechanical and electrostatic filtration. The result, the Blueair Classic 403 can trap even the particles as small as 0.1 microns in size.
Source: Amazon
If you worry about the household odors or chemicals, you should get the DualProtection filter instead. With an additional Activated Carbon filter, this filter can trap all common gaseous pollutants, made by only high-quality materials.
As the in-house air filter of a top-class air purifier brand, the filter is naturally anti-bacterial and 100% recyclable.
Well, the same test is applied for the Blueair Classic 403 like its brother in 400 Series, in a room of 300 square feet and I let it run in 1 hour. Blueair Classic 403 easily scored 99.93% for trapping any particles down to 0.3 microns, which is the same as the Aprilaire Allergy9550, Honeywell HPA600B, and higher than the Alen BreatheSmart.
The filter for the Blueair Classic 403 costs only $59, but it only lasts for 6 months, so the annual filter cost of a Blueair air purifier is still really high.

Blueair Classic 403 Room Coverage
It wouldn’t be wrong to say the high-end air purifier can deal with extra-large spaces easily. The larger room coverage, the more expensive. Blueair Classic 403 is under the 400 Series, which targets only the medium to large rooms. Therefore, this Blueair Classic 403 is capable of cleaning a room up to 434 square feet, verified by the AHAM.
The ACH of Blueair Classic 403 is 5X. High-end fan power allows the Blueair Classic 403 to exchange the air every 12 minutes.
The CADR of Blueair Classic 403 is 240 Dust/ 240 Smoke/ 240 Pollen (cfm). This CADR rating is a bit less than the Blueair Classic 405, resulting in a drop in efficiency.

Blueair Classic 403 Sound
The core technology of Blueair – HEPASilent means the air purifier can go as quiet as possible even with high fan power. Well, the Blueair Classic 403 keeps the noise level to be only 32 decibels (dB) on lowest speed, which is just like the whisper.
On highest speed, the noise level reaches 52 decibels, which is better than the 600 Series like the Blueair Classic 680i or Classic 603. It is not too loud if compared with other air purifiers with the same fan power.

Blueair Classic 403 Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.
Blueair gains another Energy Star air purifier with the Blueair Classic 403, effectively keeps the power consumption to be as low as 30 watts. The highest rated power of this air purifier is also lower than the Blueair Classic 405, to be just 80 watts.
For running a Blueair Classic 403 8 hours per day, you only need to pay from $11 to $29 annually.

Blueair Classic 403 Additional Features
We should skip this section totally, because the Blueair Classic 403 is built to be the first foundation of 400 Series, therefore it doesn’t have any additional features. The only exception is the countdown timer, which alerts you when your filter needs to be changed.
If you want to taste the high-end smart features, I recommend you to buy the Blueair Classic 405 or Classic 480i instead.

Our verdict
The Blueair Classic 403 is still a great air purifier, because its internal power is too good to ignore. But with the same price tag as the smart Blueair Classic 405, this device is no longer recommended for your next purchase.
It is discontinued at the moment.
