Blue Pure 511 Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

The Blue Pure 511 didn’t exist when we took a break three years ago, but it is now the most budget-friendly Blueair air purifier you can still buy, especially after models like the Blue Pure 411 Auto and Blue Pure 411 have gone out of stock. With how quickly Blueair removes old products, we decide to write the hand-on Blue Pure 511 review as soon as possible.

Blue Pure 511 ranks C+ in our air purifier ranking list. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

In Breathe Quality, we have reviewed all air purifiers under these sections. Also, we guarantee that:

  • We provide honest reviews (both pros and cons) so that everyone can make the best decisions.
  • We do not (and never will) exaggerate one product just to let you click the links and buy that product blindly.

Blue Pure 511 review
PROS

  • HEPASilent is high performance, and silent
  • AHAM and Energy Star rating
  • 2-year warranty
CONS

  • Not a single additional feature
  • Annual filter cost is high

Founded in Stockholm, Sweden in 1996 by Bengt Rittri, Blueair has built its reputation on a single proprietary technology: HEPASilent, a dual-layer filtration system that combines mechanical and electrostatic filtration to capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns with less noise and energy than conventional HEPA alone. Time for my Blue Pure 511 review.

Other Blueair’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Blue Pure 511 Price

One thing we don’t like about Blueair is that it makes good, even great, air purifiers but then discontinues them for new designs without a clear reason. This may be due to its acquisition by Unilever, as the brand now seems more focused on design than on developing new technology. In the case of the Blue Pure 511, if it weren’t for our audience’s request, we wouldn’t have bought it for review.

Why? It looks and feels so similar to the Blue Pure 411 Auto, but has the score of the pure old Blue Pure 411 in the past. The Blue Pure 511 is priced at $99, and since the old Blue Pure 411 is long gone, we can reasonably consider it a 411 v2.0.

At the moment, the Blue Pure 411 v2.0, sorry I mean Blue Pure 511, is competing against far better competitors like the TCL Breeva A2, GermGuardian AC3000, Honeywell HPA125 and Levoit Core 300. They all share the same performance, but the TCL, GermGuardian and Honeywell all have Smart Sensor – which is a very convenient feature for monitoring indoor air quality.

Not to mention the Blueair Mini Restful in the same lineup, but it has some interesting features that you will want to have. To make thing worse, the Blue Pure 511i Max is available and ready to win the low-range market with its better performance, smarter features and overall newer design.

So, we know Blueair is trying to clear the Blue Pure 511 out of stock, but as long as it is available, it should go to our air purifier ranking list.

Blue Pure 511 Design and Size

The Blueair Blue Pure 511 is a rather compact desktop purifier – its small cylindrical footprint made it feel like a bedside-table appliance rather than a floor-standing unit. It is basically the Blue Pure 411 Auto if you own the device, but even smaller. The old appliance is 16.7 inches in height, while the Blue Pure 511 is only 13.4 inches.

However, the Blue Pure 511 is slightly heavier at 4.2 lbs than its predecessor. This may be due to a more powerful motor, as it’s otherwise difficult to explain how a smaller unit ends up heavier.

Other than that, it’s the “pure” Blue Pure family design: washable pre-filter, Scandinavian design, 360° air intake and one-touch control. It makes the Blue Pure 511 as minimalist and simple as possible.

Upon release, the Blue Pure 511 is available in three washable pre-filter colorways – gray, navy, and blue, although we only tested it in the standard configuration.

Blue Pure 511 Filters

We check the performance of one air purifiers based on its air filters’ quality and material, as well as the number of air filter types in the testing device. The Blue Pure 511 runs the same 3-stage air cleaning system as usual.

  1. Pre-filter – It’s worth noting that the fabric pre-filter of the Blue Pure 511 is outside the air purifier. This is one great advantage of this pre-filter, because you can easily check its status and vacuum or wipe the contaminants out immediately.
  2. Particle filter – Instead of using a True HEPA filter, the Blue Pure 511 runs a polypropylene fiber filter to help capture 99.97% of all allergens as small as 0.3 microns like dust, dust mites, pet dander, pollen and fungi (HEPASilent technology).
  3. Activated Carbon filter – The Activated Carbon filter is added inside the Particle filter and effective against smoke, odors, gases and VOCs.

At its heart, the Blue Pure 511 uses the very same Particle filter like every air purifiers in Blue family. It uses HEPASilent™ technology consisting of a mechanical particle filter combined with an electrostatic layer, capturing at least 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns. Inside the filter is a layer of carbon which absorbs light gases, including VOCs, smog, chemicals and household odours from pets, smoke and cooking.

The Breathe Quality test for the Blue Pure 511 is conducted in a 100-square-foot room, running continuously for one hour. The Blue Pure 511 captures 99.97% of all particles down to 0.3 microns, which is better than the Honeywell HPA125 and Coway Airmega 50, and shares the nearly same result with the TCL Breeva A3 and GermGuardian AC3000.

Blue Pure 511 review

Normally, the Blue family will asks you to replace filter every 6 months. And the Blue Pure 511’s filter cost is quite high at $36.

Blue Pure 511 Room Coverage

The Blue Pure 511 is another Blueair air purifier being certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). Its suggested room size is 189 square feet, but if you’re okay with the air purifier exchanging air 2 times per hour, the room coverage goes up to 432 sq ft.

The ACH of the Blue Pure 511 is 5X. All AHAM-verified air purifiers run at recommended room size will exchange air 5 times per hour.

The CADR of the Blue Pure 511 is 123 Dust/ 122 Smoke/ 123 Pollen (cfm). It is better than the Blue Pure 411 Auto in the past, but not as good as the Blue Pure 511i Max.

Blue Pure 511 Sound

The Blue Pure 511 is designed specifically for bedroom, with motto to be powerful yet whisper-silent. The lowest noise level is only 24 decibels (dB), and yes, it is quieter than the whisper. However, it is still not as good as the Blueair Mini Restful.

On its highest fan speed, the noise level of the Blue Pure 511 is only 49 decibels. For context, it is very similar to moderate rainfall’s noise.

Blue Pure 511 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.

Again, the Blue Pure 511 is an Energy Star air purifier, being a device under Blueair name. It has very impressive integrated energy factor of 7, and a power wattage of 16 watts only. While it is not as good as the Blue Pure 411 Auto, it is still better than most modern air purifiers today.

So to say, if you’re running the Blue Pure 511 for 8 hours per day and everyday, the annual cost is around $7.

Blue Pure 511 Additional Features

The Blue Pure 511 reflects how we use the Blue Pure 411 in the past, so it has only one simple button to turn on and well, not anything else. Therefore, I am sad to say that you will not have any Smart Sensor, and no timer.

We still have the LED indicator for filter replacement, which is the least one air purifier could do.

Our verdict

It is certainly Blueair’s most affordable air purifier, and it reminds us of an era of minimalist, simple Blue family designs. The Blue Pure 511 will likely go out of stock soon, but if you just want a simple, compact, plug-and-play air purifier, don’t hesitate to buy one.
