Shark got its start in 1994, when Mark Rosenzweig founded the company in Montreal. It built its name around vacuum cleaners with No-Loss-of-Suction technology, launching the Shark brand in 2007 before adding Ninja to the family in 2009. Let’s take a look at our Shark HP201 review.

Other Shark’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Shark HP201 Price

The Shark HP201 shows that the vacuum cleaner company’s move into large-room HEPA purifiers with the Clean Sense line was more than a one-off experiment – although the last couple of years have certainly brought some curveballs for the brand’s air purifier strategy.

The Shark HP201 is one model in its HP200 series, which is the bigger version of the HP100 series like the Shark HP102 that we’ve made a review recently. It is certainly for larger rooms, so the Shark HP201 asks you to pay $329 for its more powerful fan.

However, as an old unit, and it seems Shark is going to discontinue the unit soon, the price of the Shark HP200 series has dropped dramatically, and you can get the Shark HP202 (the black version of the Shark HP201) at only $199.

At this new price, the Shark HP201 (and HP202) is competing against the Blue Pure 311i Max, Levoit Vital 200S, Levoit Core 400S, Winix T810 and Coway Airmega 200M. It is still behind, though it is easier than facing the Blue Pure 211i Max or Levoit Core 600S instead.

Shark HP201 Design and Size

On the surface, the Shark HP201 looks a lot like the Shark HP102, only bigger. It has the same rounded-top console as before, situated as a single freestanding unit, with the same circular control layout. The sensors and vents here are functionally similar to the HP102.

The matte white plastic shell, complete with Shark’s logo on the front, and the signature AQI display is the selling point of the Shark HP201’s design. If you’re looking for the black color, again, you should check the Shark HP202 instead.

Shark HP201 review

The Shark HP201’s dimensions are 10.82 x 10.82 x 22.47 inches, and it weighs 10.9 lbs. It’s a touch lighter than some rivals in its coverage class, but by so fine a margin that you probably won’t notice unless you compare them side-by-side.

It is still using the bottom-to-top airflow system concept, which is the most common for a cylindrical air purifier.

Shark HP201 Filters

We check the performance of one air purifiers based on its air filters’ quality and material, as well as the number of air filter types in the testing device. The Shark HP201 uses the same all-in-one air filter from its previous Shark HP102.

  1. Pre-filter – The mesh pre-filter is able to capture larger contaminates like dust, hair and lint. It combines with the Activated Carbon filter to protect against household odors from cooking, cleaning products and more.
  2. True HEPA filter – The True HEPA filter can capture all ultra-fine particles down to 0.3 microns, with efficiency up to 99.97%.

For the performance, the Shark HP201 did quite good for $200-range, when it can capture 99.79% of all particles as small as 0.3 microns, in 1 hour. But when you enlarge the room size which is designed for its original price ($329), the Shark HP201 struggles a lot.

As you can see, the performance of the Shark HP201 can only capture 98.38% in the true test for its price. Such performance is behind the Winix 9800, Blue Signature SP3i and Coway Airmega Mighty 2.

Shark HP201 review

We need the new HE2FKPRO filter for the Shark HP201, and it costs a little higher than the HP102 at $79. The filter is required to be replaced after 1 year, as usual.

Shark HP201 Room Coverage

Again, we have another Shark air purifier with a room-size rating larger than it can actually handle. 1000 square feet for the Shark HP201 is not recommended by Breathe Quality, actually you should aim for 250 square feet.

The ACH of the Shark HP201 is 5X. If you’re going to use the air purifier in the manufacturer’s suggested room size, the Shark HP201 only exchanges 1 time per hour.

The CADR of the Shark HP201 is 182 Dust/ 165 Smoke/ 178 Pollen (cfm).

Shark HP201 Sound

The Shark HP201 is built with powerful air cleaning, as it is one of the key pillars of its marketing. As a result, the Shark HP201 doesn’t have good noise level reduction, and the lowest speed is recorded at 40 decibels (dB). It is the standard of library noise level, but it isn’t the best in terms of quiet operation.

On it highest setting, the Shark HP201 can run as high as 60 decibels. Remember that the Shark’s fan power is actually very high, but it is hindered by the HEPA technology.

Shark HP201 Power Consumption

As one of the most criteria when deciding to buy an air purifier, one of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?”. In fact, an air purifier needs to run for a long time (usually more than 8 hours) to be efficient.

It seems the Shark HP201 was once in the Energy Star database, but not anymore. We calculated the rated power of the Shark HP201 at 36 watts, so it has better performance per watt than the previous Shark HP102.

If you’re going to run the Shark HP201 at least 8 hours per day, the annual cost will be $15.78.

Shark HP201 Additional Features

We have the Shark HP201 as a part of the “Clean Sense IQ” series, which is Shark’s take on automatic air-quality tracking. You will get the key benefit of hands-off operation like a percentage readout and auto fan adjustment. This is the convenience of the Smart Sensor, which is a must-have feature for modern air purifiers.

For Clean Sense IQ, there are a few extra features over a basic auto mode, including an Odor Lock setting to reduce cooking and pet smells for a set amount of time. Some of these seem a little basic though – primarily, the child lock, which you access by holding the power button for two seconds.

Other than that, we still have a Timer, a light dimmer, and an LED indicator for filter replacement. The Shark HP201 is very basic on its own, but for many people, a good basic air purifier is the best air purifier.

Our verdict

The Shark HP201 is decent at this price point, with a clear AQI display and not-bad performance. At its current ranking, you can tell that the air purifier is only worth the purchase if you especially want a Shark air purifier, and if it doesn’t get a discount, it loses to the Shark HP302 by a wide margin.
