A passable effort at a 2-in-1 air purifier (the Coway Airmega Aim) – but for one that had us so excited by a first-of-its-kind oscillating fan we felt sorely let down. Let’s talk a bit in this interesting Coway Airmega Aim review.

Coway Airmega Aim Price

The Coway Airmega Aim is the most distinctive compact purifier yet from Coway, with a capable oscillating fan and a clean design, but it doesn’t really offer enough filtration power to rise above the slew of units already at this entry-level price point.

Better known for its flagship Airmega whole-home air purifiers, Coway seems keen to stake out some ground in the budget-friendly, 2-in-1 air purifier+fan market too. It’s the first air purifier we’ve seen from the South Korean firm that combines filtration with a directional oscillating fan, which is quite unique for this price range.

Yes, the Coway Airmega Aim is only $149, which is $100 cheaper than the Honeywell HPA6000 for the same function. However, choosing the Coway Airmega Aim means passing on the Coway Airmega 150, which offers noticeably better performance. Even the more affordable Coway Airmega 100 delivers stronger air filtration performance than the Airmega Aim.

It’s going up directly against the likes of the Blue Pure 511i Max, Winix A230 and the Levoit Core 300S, and that means the air purifier has a tough fight on its hands.

Coway Airmega Aim Design and Size

The Coway Airmega Aim is something of an oddity in many ways: it looks set to appeal mainly to compact-space shoppers and in the US it comes as a package with a detachable remote control. It offers some unusual features like dual-axis oscillation and 360° air intake, which makes it an oscillating air purifier.

The key question is: has Coway done enough to make the Airmega Aim stand out in a crowded mid-range field? Or is it another purifier destined to sink without trace outside of small apartments and dorm rooms?

First thing first, the design. The Coway Airmega Aim is a neatly designed, light, compact unit with a perforated mesh body and a rounded swivel pedestal, and it’s functional without being spectacular (something of a running theme for this purifier).

The unit measures 10.6 x 9.2 x 16.7 inches and weighs in at a very light 7.3 lbs – that’s notably lighter than the Coway Airmega 200M, but it is taller than the Airmega 100. Thanks to the oscillation setting, you can adjust the air purifier’s height for the better benefit.

Our review unit is the Marshmallow version of the Coway Airmega Aim, though you can also choose the White version, which is amusingly not completely white. Notably, Coway has always been strong when it comes to offering multiple color options for its air purifiers, and even a budget-friendly model like the Airmega Aim comes with two different color choices.

The Coway Airmega Aim features a clean and easy-to-read base control panel with responsive buttons and an LED air quality indicator. The unit can also tilt vertically up to 90°, making it suitable for use either as a fan or as an air purifier with a simple bottom-to-top airflow system concept.

Coway Airmega Aim Filters

To evaluate an air purifier’s performance, we usually start by checking the types of filters it uses and the number of filtration layers included in the system. The Coway Airmega Aim still runs the same 3-stage air cleaning system like its other Airmega brothers.

1. Pre-filter – A vacuumable pre-filter is outside the main filter to capture large objects of contaminants.
2. True HEPA filter – It is rated to capture up to 99.97% of airborne particles smaller than 0.3 microns; and 99.5% of particles down to 0.1 microns.
3. Activated Carbon filter – A deodorization layer inside the HEPA filter, to deal with odors and smoke.

Even for a unique model like the Coway Airmega Aim, Coway still uses the same well-known HEPA filtration technology found in many of its air purifiers. The filter has achieved very high efficiency ratings in laboratory testing, although real-world conditions can vary. Still, Coway air purifiers generally have a strong reputation for reliable filtration performance in everyday use.

With a performance similar to the Airmega 50, the Airmega Aim will struggle in its own test, at space of 150 square feet. As you can see, the performance of the Airmega Aim is only 96.31%, far behind the competition like the Levoit Core 300S, Medify MA-25 or Sharp FP-F30UH.

For the filter replacement, the Airmega Aim asks you 8 months to replace the new, and the cost is good at ony $29.

Coway Airmega Aim Room Coverage

The Coway Airmega Aim feels more like a personal air purifier than a full-room unit. Coway rates it for spaces up to 492 square feet, but that coverage area seems overly optimistic. We would recommend using it in rooms up to around 150 square feet for more effective air cleaning performance.

The ACH of the Airmega Aim is 2X to 4X. If you’re using the air purifier in the Coway’s suggested room size, the air purifier will exchange air only once per hour.

The CADR of the Airmega Aim is 75 Dust/ 66 Smoke/ 88 Pollen (cfm). It is even weaker than the Airmega 100, but we must again remind you that this is a personal air purifier.

Coway Airmega Aim Sound

Being a fan, the Coway Airmega Aim can’t run as silent as other standalone air purifiers like the Airmega 100. The lowest noise level is measured at 38 decibels (dB), which is similar to a portable fan.

On highest speed, the Airmega Aim can reach 56 decibels (dB), which is strangely quieter than the Airmega 50. For most users, the noise level should not be distracting unless you are particularly sensitive to sound.

Coway Airmega Aim Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.

As a fan-focused device, the Coway Airmega Aim is not as energy-efficient as a traditional standalone air purifier. It requires a different type of motor to generate stronger airflow for cooling, and that results in a higher power consumption of 33 watts.

If you’re using the Airmega Aim for at least 8 hours per day, you need to pay $14.46 annually, much higher than the Airmega 100.

Coway Airmega Aim Additional Features

Even for a budget-friendly 2-in-1 air purifier and fan like the Coway Airmega Aim, Coway did not skip extra features. The Airmega Aim includes a Smart Sensor, just like many other models in the Airmega lineup. It works with the Auto mode to automatically adjust the fan speed based on the surrounding air quality conditions.

As a fan, the Coway Airmega Aim includes an automatic oscillation feature with coverage of up to 80 degrees. You can also adjust the settings conveniently using the included remote control.

Finally, as an air purifier, the Airmega Aim has a Child lock setting, a Timer up to 24 hours, and Night light feature. The air purifier has a LED indicator for filter replacement, which is handy, just remember to reset after you replace the new filter.

Our verdict

As a 2-in-1 device, you should not expect the Coway Airmega Aim to perform like a dedicated full-size air purifier. Instead, it makes more sense to view it as a personal fan with added air purification capabilities, and for that purpose, the Airmega Aim performs quite well.
