Shark HP102 Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

Shark continues to sell the Shark HP102 as the entry point into its air purifier range, and the lineup has since grown to include the sealed-filter BreatheClear Compact Pro (Shark HP062), which trades the HP102’s replaceable filter for a six-year NeverChange cartridge at a similar price. Okay, time for the Shark HP102 review.

Shark HP102 ranks B- in our air purifier ranking list. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

In Breathe Quality, we have reviewed all air purifiers under these sections. Also, we guarantee that:

PROS

  • Compact size, very impressive AQI display
  • Good performance per watt
  • 2-year warranty
CONS

  • Low actual performance
  • High annual filter cost

Shark, part of SharkNinja, entered the air purifier market by leaning on the brand recognition it built in vacuums, positioning its air purifiers around straightforward, easy-to-live-with performance. The Shark HP102 review will share you one of the first air purifier models of this brand.

Other Shark’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Shark HP102 Price

The Shark HP102 is perhaps the oldest air purifier from this brand that is still available in stock, along with the Shark HP132. Each Shark air purifier is advertised through a term, and for the Shark HP102, it’s the “Clean Sense IQ”. It means the Shark HP102 wants to emphasize in its Smart Sensor, and somehow it’s one of the rare things 6 years ago.

This is also the start of a family, as you can search for the Shark HP202 for a more powerful air purifier. Overall, the Shark HP102 is still quite expensive for its performance at $199, but you can grab our deal below to buy the new item at only $144.

For the price, the Shark HP102 is against the top-tier air purifiers at this moment: like the Blue Pure 311i Max, Levoit Vital 200S, Levoit Core 400S, Winix T810 and/or the Coway Airmega 200M. Even if you can quickly grab our deal, the Shark HP102 is still not the best performer in its price point, for you should look for the Levoit Vital 100S or Blue Pure 511i Max instead.

Another option is to buy the Shark HP102 in a renewed condition, which is basically a second-hand product at a cheaper price. As a result, you won’t get the 2-year warranty from SharkNinja, and we can’t guarantee that the product won’t be defective.

Shark HP102 Design and Size

The Shark HP102 presents itself as a compact, no-frills unit, with a level of fit and finish that’s respectable for the price, not least because it shares in the cylindrical console design language of Shark’s larger HP200-series air purifiers, like the Shark HP202 we will make a review later.

The glossy white plastic shell is superb at hiding scuffs but has a fairly plain, utilitarian look, meaning it blends into a nightstand easier. It’s worth noting that if you don’t like the white color option from the Shark HP102, you can search for the Shark HP100 instead. Remember the below link is for a renewed product.

Shark HP102 review

Again, we must remind you that the Shark HP102 is very compact, at only 14.56 inches in height and 8.66 inches in diameter. However, it is a bit heavier than other air purifiers of the same size, weighing 5.85 lbs.

The Shark HP102 uses a bottom-to-top airflow system, like literally every cylindrical air purifier you can buy on the market. It focuses on displaying the AQI, which is a nice feature that we want more cylindrical air purifiers to learn from. The top control panel has quite a few options, which is not to my liking, but it isn’t crowded enough for a guide to be a must-have.

Shark HP102 Filters

We check the performance of one air purifiers based on its air filters’ quality and material, as well as the number of air filter types in the testing device. The Shark HP102 uses a simple all-in-one air filter, with 2-stage as below:

  1. Pre-filter – The mesh pre-filter is able to capture larger contaminates like dust, hair and lint. It combines with the Activated Carbon filter to protect against household odors from cooking, cleaning products and more.
  2. True HEPA filter – The True HEPA filter can capture all ultra-fine particles down to 0.3 microns, with efficiency up to 99.97%.

The Shark HP102 isn’t a good air purifier in terms of performance for the price. Normally, you can find an air purifier with similar performance for $100 or less, like the Levoit Vital 100. If you’re looking for the best performers at around $200, as you can see, the Winix T830 and Levoit Vital Pet Pro are better options.

Still, with the current Breathe Quality deal, the Shark HP102 is only tested for up to 150 square feet, and you can expect the Shark HP102 to have a better score (though sadly, not a better ranking).

For the filter replacement, you only need to replace the filter of the Shark HP102 after 1 year. The filter cost is quite high at $69, and many vendors will ask you to replace even after 6 months.

Shark HP102 Room Coverage

The Shark HP102 is suggested for rooms up to 500 square feet by the manufacturer. Remember, this is based on 1X ACH, and we recommend keeping it at 5X ACH at least. As a result, the Shark HP102 is best used in rooms of 100 square feet.

The ACH of the Shark HP102 is 5X. If you’re going to use the air purifier in the manufacturer’s suggested room size, the Shark HP102 only exchanges 1 time per hour.

The CADR of the Shark HP102 is 91 Dust/ 80 Smoke/ 94 Pollen (cfm). It is even lower than a $100 Levoit Core 300 that we consider as the best air purifier many years ago.

Shark HP102 Sound

Building on the fan technology the company first introduced with its larger HP200-series units, the Shark HP102 has a quite higher noise level, especially on its lowest speed. We recorded the lowest noise level of the Shark HP102 to be 37.8 decibels (dB), which is as high as the medium fan speed of its competitor air purifiers.

On its highest speed, the noise level is stable at 54.5 dB, which is decent for a compact air purifier like the Shark HP102.

Shark HP102 Power Consumption

As one of the most criteria when deciding to buy an air purifier, one of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?”. In fact, an air purifier needs to run for a long time (usually more than 8 hours) to be efficient.

The Shark HP102 has a rated power of 24 watts, which is quite good if you count performance per watt. However, its performance is still too poor for the price point, sadly.

If you’re going to run the Shark HP102 at least 8 hours per day, the annual cost will be $10.52.

Shark HP102 Additional Features

The Shark HP102 is based on the “Clean Sense IQ” feature, which is just another term for the common Smart Sensor you can find in most modern air purifiers. In the past, we could find air purifier brands that didn’t care about the Smart Sensor, which was a bad thing because the air purifier needed to work automatically. However, it’s 2026, and an air purifier must have its own Smart Sensor.

Other than that, the Shark HP102 has a Child lock setting, a dimmer and LED indicator for filter replacement. The basic setting is quite good for a $200 air purifier, but remember that top-tier products will have Wi-Fi capability as well.

There is also the Shark HP102PET, which is basically the same as the Shark HP102 but comes with the newer Pet filter. You can check it below, but one warning: the HP102PET isn’t any different from the base Shark HP102.

Our verdict

The Shark HP102 isn’t a good air purifier at this price point because there are simply too many good options out there, and we can no longer accept a B- air purifier.
