Honeywell is the top-of-mind air purifier brand in the whole of North America, and we have tested no less than 30 different air purifying devices from this brand. The new line of the company comes with a strange device that’s Honeywell HPA830, which stands out from its brothers with new design. In this Honeywell HPA830 Review, we hope to share our thoughts on its strengths and weaknesses.

Other Honeywell’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Honeywell HPA830 Price

If you’re reading this Honeywell HPA830 review, I’m under the assumption that it’s because you’re looking for a brand new, different Honeywell air purifier. If you’re not looking for such a device, then I advise you to look for the Honeywell HPA5200 or Honeywell HPA5300, both of which offer serious performance for their respective room sizes as well as the same great VOC sensor.

This is because the Honeywell HPA830, like the Honeywell HPA030B, wants to deliver a new taste of design. Sometimes these changes work, but not always, as the Honeywell HHT290WHD is one example of a new design left to die. The Honeywell HPA830 is a very different Honeywell air purifier, and because of this, it may lose the majority of its loyal fans.

The Honeywell HPA830 has an official price of $199, and people are skeptical about trying it, based on reviews on Amazon. Given that the new Honeywell HPA180 can be found for just $149, I can’t help but feel that’s a better deal since it has all the most important specs of its pricier sibling.

For context, the Honeywell HPA080 started at $99, which is a lot cheaper, and it does have the same VOC sensor as our current unit. Competitors like the Winix AM90, Levoit Vital 200S, and GermGuardian AC5109W all give double the fan power of the Honeywell HPA830 at the same price.

Honeywell HPA830 Design and Size

Honeywell demonstrates that the company not only offers a wide range of air purifier designs, but also creates a one-of-a-kind design for a single air purifier. The Honeywell HPA830 is a different air purifier from the rest of its line; it looks and feels nothing like an usual Honeywell air purifier.

In fact, the new design does bring Honeywell back to the common design and concept of modern air purifiers. Yes, this is the typical 360-degree air inlet you would find on nearly all compact air purifiers at the moment. The Honeywell HPA830, in this regard, is easier to accept than traditional things like the Honeywell HPA175 and Honeywell HPA180.

The air purifier is quite compact at only 22 inches in height and 14.7 inches in diameter. Such height is supported by three legs, which are necessary to show off its illuminating light for the air quality indicator. With these assembled legs, the Honeywell HPA830 reminds me of the Bissell air220 or Bissell air320.

However, it isn’t just for aesthetic reasons, as the Honeywell HPA830 supports a fully bottom-to-top airflow system concept. The 360° air inlet is the way to go for many current air purifiers, and I think it is the wise choice for a tower air purifier. It helps the Honeywell HPA830 to clean better at a lower fan speed, thus reducing the noise level. That’s why the Honeywell HPA830 is the first device in its family to tout “ultra-quiet operation.”

Honeywell HPA830 includes a simple top control panel with mechanical buttons, and I prefer it to the touch control panel of the new Honeywell HPA5200 or Honeywell HPA5100. As an air purifier meant for bedrooms, the Honeywell HPA830 has an essential oil tray at the air outlet.

The Honeywell HPA830 weighs 12.6 lbs, which is heavier than old compact Honeywell air purifiers like the Honeywell HPA060, but it feels more sturdy and solid.

Honeywell HPA830 Filters

It would be the first time you see Honeywell builds an alone air filter, as well as a brand new air filter. Still, it’s the same 2-stage air cleaning system from the original Honeywell model.

  1. Pre-filter – The pre-filter combines Activated Carbon filter in it. This will both help adsorb VOCs, gases, odors and trap larger particles. You will need to replace this filter after 3 months of usage.
  2. True HEPA filter – The Honeywell HPA830 uses a True HEPA filter to capture up to 99.97% of down to 0.3 microns contaminant particles like pet dander, mold, viruses, bacteria and pollen.

Honeywell HPA830 comes back to its roots and doesn’t include the optional Activated Carbon filter, which is formulated with customizable carbons and chemicals, like its next-generation brothers. It can help reduce the cost of the air filter and make the air purifier more compact.

Honeywell rarely produced a unique air filter for a single air purifier, but the Honeywell HPA830 appears to be a new beginning. So it doesn’t share its filter with anything at the moment, but we can hope to see more models with the all-in-one air filter, of course, if the sales go well.

The Honeywell HPA830 is hindered by its low fan power, and as a result, it will take more time to clean the standard test at its price range. As you can see, the Honeywell HPA830 had the lowest performance when compared with the Hunter HP600, Bissell air220 and Levoit Core 400S.

Honeywell makes a new filter for the Honeywell HPA830, the Filter J (HRFJ830). You should notice that the air filter doesn’t include carbon inside, so its thickness is purely made of HEPA fibers. You should change the filter once every year, and its price is very good at only $38.

Honeywell HPA830 Room Coverage

Honeywell HPA830 is sent to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) for a certified test of its fan power and room coverage. You can use the Honeywell HPA830 confidently in a room of 190 square feet, or if you can enjoy less frequent air changes, the room size suggestion is up to 300 square feet.

The ACH of Honeywell HPA830 is 5x. New certifications made by the AHAM test products to clean air for up to 5 times per hour.

The CADR of Honeywell HPA5300 is 123 Dust/ 120 Smoke/ 132 Pollen (cfm). It is nowhere near the fan power of the Honeywell HPA5200 which costs less, and for many people, this is a big downside.

Honeywell HPA830 Sound

The Honeywell HPA830 is the first air purifier with the title of “ultra-quiet” from this American company. Perhaps this is a start for a new line of bedroom air purifiers, and the Honeywell HPA830 does decently at keeping the noise down. I measured a noise level of only 24 decibels (dB) on the lowest speed of this Honeywell HPA830.

Even when running the Honeywell HPA830 on its highest speed, the noise level reaches only 53 decibels. The Honeywell HPA830 is really a quiet air purifier, thanks to its new design concept.

Honeywell HPA830 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” because we need to run an air purifier for a long time, and power consumption is really something to consider. There is even a label named “Energy Star” for the most energy-efficient air purifiers, which we consider a point in our performance ranking.

The Honeywell HPA830 is a new Energy Star-rated air purifier from Honeywell, and it does much better than its brothers in terms of saving energy. Indeed, the rated power of the Honeywell HPA830 is only 27 watts, meaning the CADR per watt ratio of this air purifier is 4.4. It needs only half the power consumption for the same fan power as the Honeywell HPA180.

If you plan to run the Honeywell HPA830 for at least 8 hours per day, you need to pay up to $9.6 annually.

Honeywell HPA830 Additional Features

Honeywell is mass-adding Smart Sensors into its air purifiers, and the Honeywell HPA830 isn’t an exception. If the console line displays the air quality indicator on its panel, the Honeywell HPA830 will illuminate the floor with color-coded readings, and I must say the idea is quite interesting.

Still, it is the same VOC sensor that can detect the tiniest airborne particles. Then the Auto Mode can automatically adjust to the optimal cleaning level for cleaner air. The Smart Sensor is necessary for running the air purifier automatically and keeps both noise level and power consumption as low as possible.

There is a Sleep Mode in this air purifier, which sets the unit to the lowest cleaning level for ultra-quiet operation. It also dims the control panel and turns off the air quality indicator light. For a bedroom setting, you can add essential oils to the tray for aromatherapy.

Finally, there is a LED indicator for filter replacement, which is a basic feature for any air purifier.

Honeywell HPA830 Customer Service

Honeywell is a market leader in air purifiers, but its customer service is not as friendly as that of competitors. You can reach customer service via the mailbox at the Honeywell Store at 407 N. Quentin Road, Palatine, Illinois. But I suggest you call 847-701-3038 for any support questions. Or you can email sales@honeywellstore.com for any problems you experience while on the site or after buying a product. Honeywell is available from Monday to Friday.

It doesn’t have free shipping like Rabbit Air or Alen, and you must notify customer service within one business day of any problems with a third-party shipping service like USPS or FedEx. Otherwise, it will not accept liability for any merchandise damage during transit. Also, the shipment can take up to 10 business days from the date that the order is shipped.

The hardest part is when you want to return one Honeywell air purifier, as you only have 30 days from the date you receive your item to process your return. If there is no transit damage or workmanship defects, you won’t receive the shipping charge (on both the original shipping charge and the return shipping charge) and will have to pay a 10–30% re-stocking fee.

Honeywell’s warranty policy is also among the longest in the industry, with up to 5 years of coverage.

Our verdict

The Honeywell HPA830 is a suitable air purifier for Honeywell fans who need a bedroom air purifier, and it does a decent job. However, if you’re looking for the most feature-rich and powerful air purifier, you should look elsewhere.
