GermGuardian AC4175W Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

We’re here with another low-cost GermGuardian air purifier that’s supposed to be the newer model of the old GermGuardian AC4100 and GermGuardian AC4150 in the past. To my surprise, the GermGuardian AC4175 with the same air filter, has better performance for its price but is not as good when it comes to features and annual cost. Let’s check it out in our GermGuardian AC4175 Review.

Update: The GermGuardian AC4200 is now available with a new design and 100% ozone-free air filtration system.

GermGuardian AC4175 ranks C- in our air purifier ranking list. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

In Breathe Quality, we have reviewed all air purifiers under these sections. Also, we guarantee that:

  • We provide honest reviews (both pros and cons) so that everyone can make the best decisions.
  • We do not (and never will) exaggerate one product just to let you click the links and buy that product blindly.

PROS

  • Filter E got better
  • Decent UV-C light filter
CONS

  • Quite noisy at highest setting
  • Lacks of Smart features
  • Annual cost is high

With the GermGuardian AC4175, Guardian Technologies did some stealth revisions to its old filter E, as we found an overall better performance than the last time we did it with the GermGuardian AC4100. That makes the GermGuardian AC4175 a promising buy for less than $100, but you should read the entire GermGuardian AC4175 Review to determine whether or not you should purchase it.

Other GermGuardian’s Air Purifier Reviews:

GermGuardian AC4175 Price

For years, Guardian Technologies made fairly conventional air purifiers that, while solid with their UV-C light and HEPA filter combination, did not rank well in our ranking list. Some GermGuardian air purifiers are still recommended, but they are not your best choice anymore.

The GermGuardian AC4100 was first recommended by us, but its performance falls far behind the competition at the moment. However, with the GermGuardian AC4175, we’re pretty sure that the filter E inside it got a stealth revision. It is now a True HEPA filter that does decent work for the price and can last for up to 8 months.

So, perhaps I will edit the reviews for both the AC4100 and AC4150 as soon as we can. But here we are with the newest GermGuardian AC4175, which costs around $69. It is a little bit more expensive than the original AC4100, so we wonder if it’s worth the extra dollars.

The GermGuardian AC4200 is still a better recommendation from Breathe Quality, and we will point you to either the Levoit LV-H128 or Airthereal ADH50B for an overall better air purifier.

GermGuardian AC4175 Design and Size

It’s quite easy to lose track of which GermGuardian air purifier you’re looking into, as the company has released a lot. Yes, a lot. The names it gives to their own air purifiers make things worse, as it’s just like a random number.

The GermGuardian AC4175 somehow shares the same design as its predecessors, the GermGuardian AC4100 and GermGuardian AC4150. It’s simple, compact, and overall a nice accessory for your desk. At 10 inches, it could be a bit smaller than the AC4100 in my memory. It would be your companion anywhere.

It features a different color option than any original GermGuardian air purifier with the classic black color. It seems like Guardian Technologies is featuring the white color for all of its products at the moment.

This GermGuardian AC4175 has its own airflow philosophy with the same back-to-front airflow system concept as its larger brothers. This could be a good way to direct the clean airflow to its users, but it’s quite difficult to place it properly.

It is still one of the most compact air purifiers on the market, at only 5 lbs.

GermGuardian AC4175 Filters

The GermGuardian AC4175 uses the same 3-in-1 air cleaning system as its predecessors. However, with the improvement of a TiO2 treatment in the UV-C light bulb, it is called 4-in-1 at the moment.

  1. Activated Carbon Filter – The normal carbon filter attacks smoke, cooking, and pet odors along with harmful VOCs emitted by common household products. A pack of four carbon filters can last for one year.
  2. True HEPA filter – The GermGuardian AC4175 can handle 99.97% of dust and allergens as small as.3 microns thanks to the new filter E.
  3. UV-C Light – The unique 2W bulb with UV-C light to fight germs, kills airborne bacteria, viruses and mold spores. Works with titanium dioxide to reduce VOCs.

The filter E is now a new True HEPA filter with much better performance, as you can see in the below test. It does much, much better than the old GermGuardian AC4100 did at 100 square feet in 1 hour. However, the air purifier is still behind the performance of the TCL Breeva A1, Envion Therapure EA150 or Honeywell HPA020.

The filter E is here for the whole 4100 series of GermGuardian, and it is suggested to be replaced after 6 to 8 months.

GermGuardian AC4175 Room Coverage

Another GermGuardian air purifier is verified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) and gains one point in our performance ranking. The GermGuardian AC4175 is expected to cover 66 square feet.

The ACH of GermGuardian AC4175 is 5X. That is the common air changes per hour for an AHAM-certified air purifier.

The CADR of GermGuardian AC4175 is 50 Dust/ 42 Smoke/ 50 pollen (cfm). So to say, I really expect the GermGuardian AC4100 and GermGuardian AC4150 to perform much better in our next possible tests, as they both have a slightly more powerful fan than the GermGuardian AC4175.

GermGuardian AC4175 Sound

The GermGuardian AC4175 is supposed to run as quietly as possible, but it is still a GermGuardian air purifier with a bit higher noise level than normal. The lowest noise level is measured at 42 decibels (dB), which is just like the normal library noise level, but it is still far from the best.

On the highest speed, the noise level is 50 decibels, which is still okay for an air purifier with such weak fan power.

GermGuardian AC4175 Power Consumption

To be one of the best air purifiers, a device must strictly pass our Breathe Quality test after long-term use. Also, one of the most frequently asked questions in Breathe Quality is: “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” We can all agree that power consumption is one important criterion to review to determine if this air purifier is worth your money or not.

Using a 2-watt UV-C bulb, the GermGuardian AC4175 reaches a power consumption of 40 watts. This air purifier, unlike most of its brothers, isn’t an Energy Star air purifier.

For using a GermGuardian AC4175 for 8 hours per day, it would cost you up to $15 per year.

GermGuardian AC4175 Additional Features

Being the newer model of the AC4100 doesn’t mean the GermGuardian AC4175 should have more features. It is also the weakest link of the GermGuardian AC4175, as it only has a LED indicator for filter replacement.

In comparison, it loses to almost any other air purifier you can find in this price range.

And don’t worry about the warranty policy of Guardian Technologies, as it warrants its products to be free of defects in materials or workmanship. You can register for a warranty for up to five years.

However, for the GermGuardian AC4175, you will only have a 1-year warranty.

Our verdict

Guess that the Fitler E is revamped completely, and it improves the performance of the GermGuardian AC4175 drastically. However, the air purifier still has many of GermGuardian’s problems, most notably the high noise level on the lowest setting, the high energy cost of its fan power, and its lack of additional features.
