After the forgettable release of the old Envion Therapure TPP540, Envion decided to make significant upgrade on the latest Envion Therapure TPP640, with a first-time Smart Sensor, a brand new design concept and finally, the best air filtration system in the whole series.

But even though it has many wonderful upgrades like that, the value it brings for the actual money seems small, comparing with all the top dogs in the low-range market. The flagship of Envion still gives some better value so long as you’re fine forgoing the newer air purifier brands and you would rather stick with the Envion name.

First, you should know the official price of Envion Therapure TPP640 will be $249, which is $100 higher than the previous flagship models – for example Envion Four Season FS200, Therapure TPP440 and Therapure TPP240. Raising the bar is right, but Envion didn’t prepare for the massive improvements in air purifier market.

Then, you can look for a better alternative of Envion Therapure TPP640, especially when the air purifier is often unavailable online. Best options should be the Honeywell HPA300, Winix HR900 or AeraMax 300. With high-quality air sensor and great True HEPA filter, these air purifiers are deserved to be your next air purifier.

Envion Therapure TPP640 Design and Size

I have to hand it to Envion for nailing the overall build quality and finish of the Envion Therapure TPP640. This air purifier looks and feels a lot more premium than the Therapure TPP540 and Therapure TPP440 in my opinion, which is a good start. It is also the same design as the Envion Therapure TPP630 in the past, and bigger than the Therapure TPP620.

The front of this air purifier is now made of straight vertical grills, instead of perforated holes like the previous models. As a result, you can enjoy the fresh air seamlessly. From the back, we still have a locking latch to hold the back air inlet with the air purifier.

Envion Therapure TPP640 is big with the height of 25 inches, following by a 8.8-inch width. Without the base, this air purifier still can stand on ground firmly, but the manufacturer still suggest to place Envion Therapure TPP640 away from the sources of wind, like window or fan.

This Envion Therapure TPP640 is a common tower air purifier, with the back-to-front air flow system concept. Both the inlet and outlet share the same size, so the air purifier can maximize the efficiency easily.

Highlight is the top control panel in a crescent moon shape, with 5 basic functional buttons just like the predecessor flagship. The LED display screen is smaller, but I feel like the new shape in overall. Most importantly, the placement of control panel is now on top of the Envion Therapure TPP640, which is much more pleasing to use than on front like the old Therapure TPP540.

Our today unit weighs only 9.5 lbs, and thanks to the convenient top handle, you can move the Envion Therapure TPP640 anywhere in your home.

Envion Therapure TPP640 Filters

When things come to the performance of one air purifier, normally we will check the quality and quantity of air filters inside this device, as well as the air filter types. As the best flagship of the whole Therapure series, Envion Therapure TPP640 is the first and only to use a 5-stage air cleaning system.

The Envion Therapure TPP640 doesn’t use only one physical air filter like the rest of the big family, it adds a cleanable pre-filter to help maintain the lifetime of the HEPA-type filter, which is said to be permanent, too. Doubling the physical filtration means the air purifier can have higher efficiency in trapping pollutants, especially when the Envion Therapure TPP640 brings back the ionizer from the old Therapure TPP240 back to the system. And don’t worry about the ionizer or UV lamp, because the Envion Therapure TPP640 is tested strictly and certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to meet an ozone emission concentration limit of 0.050 parts per million, and it won’t trigger any asthma or respiratory issues for you.

I also made a test for the Envion flagship, just like any other air purifiers in the same family. The test is conducted in a room of 150 square feet, and I let this air purifier run for 1 hour. The result, this is the best air purifier of the whole Therapure series, with high efficiency of 97% for trapping any particles down to 0.3 microns. It is still behind the efficiency of the Envion Allergy Pro AP200, as the device has True HEPA filter, though. However, we can believe in one day, Envion will make a True HEPA filter for Therapure series.

Envion Therapure TPP640 Sound

As far as I’ve tested, the Envion Therapure TPP640 is still unable to keep the noise level at a much more pleasing range. It is, again, another Envion air purifier with high noise level, and I don’t recommend to use it in quiet places, like bedroom or office.

Lab tests confirmed that the noise level of this air purifier is around 60 decibels (db), the threshold of noise level from restaurants or other public places. If you are sensitive to the sound, I advise you to keep this air purifier on lowest setting, especially while you’re sleeping.

Envion Therapure TPP640 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” because we need to run an air purifier for a constant long time, and power consumption is really a thing to consider.

Nothing change for the fifth-generation flagship of Envion, as the Envion Therapure TPP640 also uses a rated power of 54 watts, with additional 5 watts for the UV lamp. It is again an Energy Star air purifier from Envion.

Envion Therapure TPP640 Additional Features

With the Envion Therapure TPP640, Envion isn’t making the same mistake they made with the old Therapure TPP540, which is a copycat flagship from the before Therapure TPP440. If a company is going to launch a flagship, it needs the necessary Smart Sensor on its device. With the Smart Sensor, you can turn on the Auto Mode, so it can both feedback the current air quality index via a LED indicator, and adjust the fan speed automatically to match the environment’s need.

Other than the smart control itself, the Envion Therapure can be controlled via a convenient remote control. It is nice to have this feature, and from Envion family, the Therapure TPP640 is also the only one.

We still have common additional features from an Envion flagship, like a basic Timer programming up to 24 hours, or a Dim mode setting to turn off the UV light bar and the LED display, so you can enjoy the night time. Finally, you still have one LED indicator for cleaning purpose. To reset the indicator, press the ion and UV lamp buttons together for 3 seconds.

Our verdict

Despite of the unrealistic price and usual unavailability, the Envion Therapure TPP640 is truly the flagship of the whole series from Envion. It has good additional features, but the core of air filtration system is just only a HEPA-type filter. Perhaps, we should wait for Envion to update the system, but I don’t know when.
