Airpura R400 Price

Just like the Airpura V400, the Airpura R400 is cheaper than both the Airpura R600 and Airpura R700. It is the second air purifier that gets a “junior” more compact and cheaper version. Key things the Airpura R400 will get for being a compact unit are: no caster, smaller and lighter, and only has less Activated carbon.

All of these come at a cheaper price, as the Airpura R400 is only $569 for the regular version. Airpura calls the “R” line as the “everyday air purifier” – an air purifier with no specialized carbon filter. Using the genuine Airpura HEPA filter, the Airpura R400 doesn’t need to regular replace filter, in the same way as the Austin Air HealthMate Jr and Austin Air HealthMate Plus Jr from the American manufacturer.

But still, the Airpura R400 costs even higher than many flagships from other popular air purifier brands, like the AeraMax SV, Rabbit Air MinusA2, or Levoit EverestAir. This makes the compact Airpura line in a very difficult spot to compete.

Airpura R400 Design and Size

Putting side-by-side, you can never tell an air purifier in “400” series apart. So, the Airpura R400 is the same as the Airpura V400.

However, people who get used to the common Airpura R600 and Airpura R700 will find the Airpura R400 a bit smaller at 15 inches in height and 12 inches in width. That means the Airpura R400 is just about 2/3 the size of the regular Airpura machine.

The air purifier reminds us of the pure Airpura bigger machines, with a smooth, perforated steel exterior and 360° airflow system concept. Being the smaller unit, the Airpura R400 doesn’t have casters, but at its half weight at 23 lbs, we can take it off the ground much easier. It is the same idea as the Austin Air HealthMate Plus Jr from Austin Air, which is the more compact form of the Austin Air HealthMate Plus.

Airpura R400 Filters

When we evaluate an air purifier’s performance, the number of filters and the air filter types it uses can tell us a lot. The Airpura R400 uses the same 3-stage air cleaning system as its big brother.

1. Pre-filter – To protect the main filter, Airpura R400 uses a poly pre-filter, which can trap large particles such as pet hair, human hair and large dust. It can be vacuumed clean and should be changed after 1 year.
2. Activated Carbon filter – Airpura R400 uses a powerful Activated Carbon filter, which is 8 lbs in weight, containing coconut shell carbon.
3. True HEPA filter – Airpura R400 packs with a True HEPA filter, and can deal with 99.97% of any contaminant particles as small as 0.3 microns in size.

The “400” series of Airpura has a consistent trait – reduces the Activated carbon filter size in order to save the cost. For the Airpura R400, being a “regular” model, the air purifier only has the normal carbon filter. Despite of that, the Airpura R400 is great at dealing with common household smoke and odors.

The True HEPA filter of the Airpura R400 is very much likely the same one you get on the Airpura R700. If you’re buying the Airpura R414, you will get the H14 Super HEPA filter.

The Airpura R400 has the same performance as the Airpura V400, in the same test. But it is far from good in comparison with the flagships from other air purifier brands, like the Blueair Classic Pro, Airmega 400S and Medify MA-112.

The Airpura R400’s filter cost is not cheap, as it is the same one you find on a $1000 air purifier. Fortunately, you only need to replace the HEPA filter after 5 years, and the carbon filter after 2 years, reducing the total annual cost by a lot.

Airpura R400 Room Coverage

Airpura recommends to use the Airpura R400 for up to 1000 square feet, if you count only 2 air changes per hour.

The ACH of Airpura R400 is 2X. Meaning it will clean the manufacturer’s suggested room size two times per hour, or every 30 minutes.

The CADR of Airpura R400 is 395 cfm in general. This is the free-flow fan power. Real-world tests show lower fan power, but it is still higher than most competitors.

Airpura R400 Sound

The Airpura R400 operates with the noise level at 54 decibels (dB) on highest fan speed. It is decently good for such an air purifier, making the Airpura R400 a good option for smaller spaces.

On lowest speed, the Airpura R400 is a bit higher than Airpura R700, as the noise level capped at 32 dB. It is whisper-quiet level, but it is far from the best.

Airpura R400 Power Consumption

In Breathe Quality, one of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?”. In fact, an air purifier needs to run for a long time (usually more than 8 hours) to be efficient, and therefore, power consumption is an important criteria to decide which air purifier to buy.

The Airpura R400 runs at 70 watts, far better than most common air purifier models in low-range segment, despite sharing the same fan power.

To run the Airpura R400 8 hours per day, you need to pay $30 annually.

Airpura R400 Additional Features

Both the Airpura and Austin Air families are saying no to any kinds of additional features. It seems that the high-end air purifiers are mostly for air purification, not for some flashy features to show off. You shouldn’t be surprise if your Airpura R400 doesn’t have any additional features.

There won’t be even the filter replacement indicator or the Timer. There is only one manual switch to change the fan speed of this machine.
