Dayton isn’t a good air purifier brands at the moment, but if you are fan of their industrial whole-home air cleaners, you can look for their personal air purifiers as well. The Dayton 2HPB8 is a very unique air purifier in the world, and today I want to give you a honest Dayton 2HPB8 Review.

Dayton 2HPB8 Price

The Dayton 2HPB8 and its brother, 2HPB9 look like fresh new flagships, which is far better than the old Dayton 2HPD4, but its budget leanings come through on first touch.

At first glance, I like the concept of Dayton 2HPB8. But as an air purifier, its performance doesn’t justify its price. So, it isn’t your everyday low-range device.

Well, the official price tag of the Dayton 2HPB8 is even more expensive than the Dayton 2HPE1, thanks to its higher fan power and an extra way to control the machine. It costs $215, while has an additional ionizer that even the next-gen Dayton 2HPC3 doesn’t have.

Dayton has always try to diverse the price range with many air purifier models, but it seems none of their candidates has the right weapon to compete. Let’s talk about the Dayton 2HPB8, it is too weak. And with its performance, I don’t think it can compete against the top dogs like Levoit LV-PUR131, Winix 5500-2 or Honeywell HPA200.

It’s time to say goodbye for a good portable air purifier, but only with an overpriced value to appeal the customers.

Dayton 2HPB8 Design and Size

If there is anything you should love the Dayton 2HPB8 and buy it, I bet it’s for its unique design. Developed from the interesting approach of the Dayton 2HPD4, the Dayton 2HPB8 is much more alike with a radio speaker. Its new silver color option bode well with the plastic body.

Moreover, it is really a portable air purifier to use. The size is compact at only 12.5 inches in height, and 17.75 inches in width. It is suitable to be on tabletop, and you don’t need to worry about the short cord length. It is 6 feet, just like any big air purifiers today.

Dayton 2HPB8 runs a bottom-to-top air flow system concept, and it enlarges the air intake grill, to maximize its fan power. It is a good move for the Dayton 2HPB8, as despite of its size, it is one of the most powerful air purifiers in Dayton family.

However, the Dayton 2HPB8 is a bit heavy, with a weight of 15 lbs.

Dayton 2HPB8 Filters

Dayton is well-known for their all-round air purifiers, and the Dayton 2HPB8 introduces a 4-stage air cleaning system inside its small body.

1. Pre-filter – A layer of pre-filter to remove large particles.
2. HEPA Carbon filter – A combination of both True HEPA filter and Activated Carbon filter, to trap 99.97% of any particles as small as 0.3 microns, like pollen, mold spores, pet dander, dust or dust mites. It can also adsorb odors and chemicals.
3. Ionizer – Anions charge the pollutants back to the mechanical air filter. Can be switched on/off.

The only difference between the Dayton model 2HPB8 and 2HPB9 is the additional ionizer in the model 2HPB8. However, Dayton 2HPB8 is sent to the CARB, and it is completely certified to under the ozone emission limit’s standard.

This air purifier works well in 100 square feet, as it can trap 99.9% of all airborne particles down to 0.3 microns, just like the more expensive Dayton 2HPC3. However, such performance is just only the same as the Blue Pure 411 or Levoit Vista 200, which costs as half as the Dayton 2HPB8.

If you want an air purifier with a good large-room performance, I recommend to look for the Winix 5300-2, Winix 5500-2 or Honeywell HPA200.

Dayton 2HPB8 will use a new filter, model 2HPC2, which combines both HEPA and carbon filters. It costs $35, and because it can last for only 1 year, it isn’t cheap.

Dayton 2HPB8 Room Coverage

Despite the size, the Dayton 2HPB8 is suggested for a room size from 322 to 430 square feet by the manufacturer. Again, I decline its recommendation, and I believe you should only use this air purifier in a room of 100 square feet.

The ACH of Dayton 2HPB8 is 1X to 3X.

The CADR of Dayton 2HPB8 is just 78 cfm in general. It is much better than the Dayton 2HPE1, but it is still too weak to compete with other air purifiers in this price range. Any air purifiers like Hathaspace, Airthereal APH260 and RENPHO RP-AP002 can clean much faster than this Dayton 2HPB8 in the same room size.

Dayton 2HPB8 Sound

There is one more thing that I can consider having a Dayton 2HPB8 – its excellent quiet operation. With such low fan power, the Dayton 2HPB8 can go as low as 26 decibels (db), which is actually quieter than the whisper.

So what should you value more: the silent operation or the actual performance. Honestly, the noise level of the Dayton 2HPB8 is great, but it doesn’t mean other air purifiers can’t compete with our today unit. Today air purifiers can even go as low as under 20 decibels easily, and they allow to use Quick Clean mode, something that you can’t expect from such weak air purifier.

Dayton 2HPB8 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” because we need to run an air purifier for a constant long time, and power consumption is really a thing to consider.

Dayton 2HPB8 is one of the most energy-saving air purifiers from this family, as its power consumption is only 39 watts.

If you run the Dayton 2HPB8 for at least 8 hours per day, it would cost you only $14 each year.

Dayton 2HPB8 Additional Features

The highly-regarded feature of the Dayton 2HPB8 is its remote control, so you don’t need to leave your favorite bed or armchair. There is only one conflict, the Dayton 2HPB8 can’t cover such large room and it should always be in your range.

Again, you get a basic Timer setting, which is very staple in a Dayton air purifier unit.

And don’t expect the Smart Sensor in this air purifier. If you need this additional feature, I recommend to look for the Winix AM90, Levoit LV-H133 or Oreck Air Response Small.

The Dayton products are now distributed by the W. W. Grainger Inc only, so actually, you won’t get proper support if you buy from other vendors. You should contact Grainger at 800-472-4643, or live chat with them online to ask more questions.

So far, Grainger offers 1-year warranty for all products sold by them. If you get a Dayton air purifier from other source (for example our deal), you won’t be covered with this warranty.

Our verdict

Sorry, but even for its unique and special design, I can’t recommend the Dayton 2HPB8 to any Breathe Quality readers. This air purifier is too weak to justify its price, and it misses a lot of valuable features to compete in the top low-range segment.
