Airpura V400 Price

Like the Airpura V600 and Airpura V700 I reviewed previously, the Airpura V400 is built for VOCs removal, wildfire smoke neutralization, and fine particle filtration is all well within its scope. With only the Airpura V400 and Airpura R400 as the “junior” system of the Airpura lineup (ahem, Austin Air HealthMate Jr reference), the air purifier from Airpura is certainly the more expensive one.

You can buy the Airpura V400 at $629, which is slightly cheaper than the Austin Air HealthMate Plus Jr, and this is certainly the main selling point of the Canadian commercial air purifier. It acts as a cheaper option, and delivers the same performance as the American machine.

The price is so high that the Airpura V400 is more expensive than the AeraMax SV that we reviewed recently, even when both are purchased for office environments. It is as expensive as the Rabbit Air A3, Alen BreatheSmart 75i and Blueair Classic Pro. Perhaps the Airpura V400 doesn’t have the same fan power as others, it compensates with the high-quality Airpura filters.

Airpura V400 Design and Size

There’s no getting away from the fact that the Airpura V400 is a compact air purifier – but that’s okay as it is, after all, the whole point of this unit. If you’re looking to downsize from an 18-lb carbon purifier – or, heaven forbid, a full 45-lb floor unit – there’s a good chance the Airpura V400 will fit comfortably into spaces the Airpura V600 and Airpura V700 simply cannot.

Even those who are accustomed to mid-size air purifiers will note the considerably reduced footprint and height of Airpura V400. The Airpura V400 measures 15.5 inches tall and 12 inches wide, and tips the scales at 23 lbs. To put that into some perspective, the V400 is shorter, narrower and half the weight of the V600 and V700.

It’s a very clean-looking unit; line it up alongside the competition and the Airpura V400 is easily one of the more understated compact air purifiers available, rivaled only by the Austin Air HealthMate Plus Jr. It isn’t a bedroom tabletop air purifier by any means, but people can’t get a serious industrial unit at smaller size.

The smooth, perforated steel exterior of the Airpura V400 offers a 360° air intake across the full cabinet surface, and while it sports a surprisingly compact profile, the fact it has no casters means it doesn’t roll between rooms as effortlessly as the V600 or V700. At 23 lbs, bringing the unit around isn’t easy, however.

At the moment, the Airpura V400 only comes in two color options, black and white, and there is a more potent version called the Airpura V414 that you can choose instead. More on it later.

The Airpura V700 weighs 45 lbs, so we really need its casters to help moving the unit around your room.

Airpura V400 Filters

When we evaluate an air purifier’s performance, the number of filters and the air filter types it uses can tell us a lot. The Airpura V400 uses the same 3-stage air cleaning system as its big brother.

1. Pre-filter – To protect the main filter, Airpura V400 uses a poly pre-filter, which can trap large particles such as pet hair, human hair and large dust. It can be vacuumed clean and should be changed after 1 year.
2. Activated Carbon filter – Airpura V400 uses a powerful Activated Carbon filter, which is 8 lbs in weight, containing potassium iodide coconut shell carbon.
3. True HEPA filter – Airpura V400 packs with a True HEPA filter, and can deal with 99.97% of any contaminant particles as small as 0.3 microns in size.

As a compact air purifier, the Airpura V400 doesn’t skim on its air filter. The heart of the machine is still the True HEPA filter at the same size as Airpura V700. If you’re buying the Airpura V414, you will get the H14 Super HEPA filter.

However, the Airpura V400 can only contain a smaller carbon filter, with only 8 lbs instead of 18 lbs. The size of the carbon filter reduces by half, but it is still the high-quality KI coconut-shell carbon, and it is super effective in adsorbing most common VOC’s and harmful, airborne chemicals and pollutants.

The Airpura V400 gains a significant boost in performance, in comparison with the Austin Air HealthMate Plus Jr. However, in one of the most difficult tests in Breathe Quality, the Airpura V400’s performance is slightly behind the Blueair Classic Pro, Airmega 400S and Medify MA-112.

The Airpura V400 is perhaps a lot cheaper than its big brother – the Airpura V700, but the filter replacement cost is still high at more than $400. Fortunately, you only need to replace the HEPA filter after 5 years, and the carbon filter after 2 years, reducing the total annual cost by a lot.

Airpura V400 Room Coverage

The Airpura V400 is recommended for rooms up to 1000 square feet by its manufacturer, and we still don’t have AHAM tests for any Airpura air purifiers. Even on Airpura blog, they actively argued against CADR.

The ACH of Airpura V400 is 2X. Meaning it will clean the manufacturer’s suggested room size two times per hour, or every 30 minutes.

The CADR of Airpura V400 is 395 cfm in general. This is the free-flow fan power. Real-world tests show lower fan power, but it is still higher than most competitors.

Airpura V400 Sound

Airpura doesn’t market the Airpura V400 as the “quietest unit on the market,” the same as the Airpura V700. The brand has its own reason, because the lowest noise level of the Airpura V400 is slightly higher at 32 decibels (dB). It is still whisper-quiet, but it isn’t the quietest.

At the highest fan speed, the Airpura V400 operates much quieter than its high-CFM sibling, at only 54 decibels. This is suitable for smaller spaces, as the noise level is similar to a normal conversation and won’t be annoying.

Airpura V400 Power Consumption

In Breathe Quality, one of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?”. In fact, an air purifier needs to run for a long time (usually more than 8 hours) to be efficient, and therefore, power consumption is an important criteria to decide which air purifier to buy.

The Airpura V400 is drawing 70 watts for its power, so it is basically a weaker but more energy-saving device than the Airpura V600 and Airpura V700.

To run the Airpura V400 8 hours per day, you need to pay $30 annually.

Airpura V400 Additional Features

Both the Airpura and Austin Air families are saying no to any kinds of additional features. It seems that the high-end air purifiers are mostly for air purification, not for some flashy features to show off. You shouldn’t be surprise if your Airpura V400 doesn’t have any additional features.

There won’t be even the filter replacement indicator or the Timer. There is only one manual switch to change the fan speed of this machine.

Our verdict

At 2/3 the price of the Airpura V600, the Airpura V400 has nearly half the performance, half the size and no caster. It also lacks the necessary performance against most residential units, and competes with only the high quality of the air filters. Only buy the air purifier if you’re serious about dealing with VOCs or other chemicals.
