Oreck AirInstinct 200 Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

The Oreck AirInstinct 200 offers a good design and better performance in many areas, but as the flagship of Oreck family, its cost is far too high for its value. Maybe it is the end for Oreck air purifier, or not, you should read our today Oreck AirInstinct Review.

It seems the Oreck Air Response Turbo has been discontinued, as we can’t find the product in Oreck website for a long time. We recommend you to look for the Oreck Air Response Large instead. However, if you can afford the AirInstinct 200, perhaps you should check the Levoit Core 600S for a much better device.

Oreck AirInstinct ranks B in our air purifier ranking list. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

PROS

  • Has True HEPA filter
  • Sleek and beautiful design
  • Super slim
  • Air filters can last longer
CONS

  • Quite expensive for its value
  • Low fan power
  • Discontinued

Since 1963, Oreck has been one of many big air purifier brands in the U.S. However, like so many old and classic brands (for example Holmes or Envion), this brand isn’t well recommended at the moment, and even with the flagship Oreck AirInstinct, we couldn’t just suggest this one to our readers. To know why, let’s find out in this Oreck AirInstinct Review.

Other Oreck’s Air Purifier Reviews

Oreck AirInstinct Price

For an unknown reason, Oreck is quite silent to promote the new flagship Oreck AirInstinct online. In fact, they even remove the device from air purifier category in official website.

A good design can’t hide the fact that the Oreck AirInstinct is lacking in many key areas, even at the price.

Yes, it does have the True HEPA filter, just like the latest Oreck Air Tower and Oreck Airvantage, but for the fan power, there are other Oreck air purifiers that offer more for less. The Oreck AirInstinct is officially $499, $50 higher than the giant Oreck Air Response Turbo and $100 higher than a Truman Cell Oreck DualMax.

And the competition blows it out of the water, too. For an air purifier that costs the same as the great alternatives from famous brands like Austin Air HealthMate Plus Jr, Boneco P400 or Dyson DP04 on discount, you get an under-powered experience with low fan power. To aggravate deeply, the Oreck AirInstinct is often unavailable on Amazon – the biggest e-commerce website in the world.

Oreck AirInstinct Design and Size

We can’t deny, the Oreck AirInstinct distinct itself from the rest of Oreck family. It isn’t a bad looking or feeling air purifier, though we can easily know the inspiration of design is from Korean counterpart, the Coway.

It doesn’t matter, as the design is truly the highlight of Oreck AirInstinct. It is super slim with only 7.5 inches in depth. The air purifier also works as a console machine, with 25.25 inches in height. This is the comfortable size, as the Oreck AirInstinct is not too big, and not too small.

Having said that, the Oreck AirInstinct has a circular hole right on the left top. It is only for lighting purpose, as it doesn’t amplify the air flow like in some Dyson models, for example the Dyson Pure Cool Link. Oreck AirInstinct still runs the same bottom-to-top air flow system concept, with the top air outlet is behind the back, and below a handle.

This air purifier has some space between the front cover and air intake, so it can improve the fan power performance, without enlarging the air purifier. Personally, I feel good to use and run the Oreck AirInstinct in my home.

The top control panel arranges the function buttons quite well, with blue light to indicate the current mode and fan speed.

The Oreck AirInstinct weighs 18.6 lbs, being the heaviest model in the whole family. Luckily, we will have a handle to move the device from room to room.

Oreck AirInstinct Filters

To help you decide the performance of one air purifier, normally we will check the air filter types, and any details in the air cleaning system. For the Oreck AirInstinct, we will have a common 3-stage filtration system.

  1. Pre-filter – Pollutants must first enter the pre-filter, to help remove the hair, fur and large dust in the air.
  2. Activated Carbon filter – Oreck AirInstinct has an anti-odor filter to remove unwanted odors from the air.
  3. True HEPA filter – The main HEPA media filter can capture 99.97% of any particles down to 0.3 microns like pollen, dust mites, allergens, pet dander, and cooking smoke.

This air cleaning system is quite similar to the previous Oreck Air Response Turbo, but this time we will have a real True HEPA filter. It can increase the efficiency of Oreck AirInstinct’s performance.

Moreover, the Oreck AirInstinct will use the highest-value HEPA filter from this company, inheriting from the previous AirInstinct model 75, 100 and 150. The HEPA filter can last for 3 years, reducing the annual filter cost effectively.

The test of this Oreck AirInstinct is conducted in the same way as the flagship of Air Response series, in a room of 200 square feet, and duration of 1 hour. As you can see from the chart below, the Oreck AirInstinct has better result of 99.92% for trapping any particles down to 0.3 microns. However, such result is still lower than the Medify MA-440 or Oransi Max.

The genuine True HEPA filter for Oreck AirInstinct costs you around $48, which is quite low for a 3-year air filter. This is also one of the best selling point of this Oreck flagship.

Oreck AirInstinct Room Coverage

The flagship of Oreck family has a quite humble room coverage. Oreck AirInstinct is only suggested for a room of 250 square feet by the manufacturer.

The ACH of Oreck AirInstinct is 4X. Like other Oreck air purifiers, it can exchange the air every 15 minutes.

The CADR of Oreck AirInstinct is 160 cfm in general. It could be the best True HEPA air purifier of Oreck family, but its fan power is even lower than a $150 Winix 5500-2 or Winix 5300-2.

Oreck AirInstinct Sound

Oreck claimed to use the silent technology on this Oreck AirInstinct, to provide quiet operation. However, Oreck isn’t the best brand for keeping the air purifier as quiet as possible, and for a True HEPA air purifier, the Oreck AirInstinct must be louder than its Truman Cell counterparts.

I’ve measured the noise level of Oreck AirInstinct to be 60 decibels (db) at maximum, and it isn’t “silent operation”. You should keep the setting to low if you need it to be quiet.

Oreck AirInstinct Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” because we need to run an air purifier for a constant long time, and power consumption is really a thing to consider.

As an Energy Star device, the Oreck AirInstint only uses 55 watts for the power consumption. You should know that in order to earn that rating, an air purifier needs to meet the strict energy efficiency guidelines set by EPA (the United States Environmental Protection Agency).

If you run the Oreck AirInstinct for 8 hours per day, you will need to pay $20 each year.

Oreck AirInstinct Additional Features

The flagship of Oreck surely has many additional features to compete with others from big air purifier brands. The Smart Sensor and Auto Mode is the must-have feature for an air purifier in this price range, as this feature help you use your air purifier “smarter”. It can read the actual air quality index, give feedback in display, and adjust the fan automatically to clean the room most efficiently.

Other than that, we will have a basic Timer to schedule the time off of Oreck AirInstint, in 1, 4 and 8 hours. Also, there is a LED indicator for filter replacement, to help you remind when to change the air filters.

Our verdict

Oreck AirInstinct finished its job to be the flagship of Oreck air purifier manufacturer, but it is far from perfect. Perhaps, Oreck should lower the price so the device can be more appealing to users.

It seems to be discontinued, so you should steer your attention to the Levoit Core 600S instead.
