AeraMax SV review
PROS

  • Superb performance
  • AHAM verified large room coverage
  • Energy saving
CONS

  • A bit noisy
  • Lacks additional features

AeraMax is the air purifier line from Fellowes, an American family business with over 100 years of workspace innovation. Launching the AeraMax range to bring that same reliability to indoor air quality, Fellowes earned AHAM Verifide CADR ratings and Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) certification across the lineup – from compact home-office models all the way up to the large-room SV. Time for the AeraMax SV review.

Other AeraMax’s Air Purifier Reviews:

AeraMax SV Price

High-end air purifiers have always been about devices with super high performance for large or extra-large rooms, denying the necessity of the additional features. Thanks to Blueair, Coway and later, Levoit, more and more air purifiers at around $499-$599 get better additional features, while boasting far better room coverage than old competitors, like the Rabbit Air MinusA2. Some old air purifiers have been outpaced, and discontinued, like the Alen BreatheSmart or Oransi EJ120.

The Fellowes AeraMax SV (9794501) is the air purifier that Fellowes aims to replace the old commercial products, like the Pro line series with the AeraMax Professional AM 2, AeraMax Professional 3 or AeraMax Professional 4. Incremental improvements on its predecessor make it a superior choice that make the purifier appealing to homeowners as well, from its powerful filtration to whisper-quiet fan to unseen internal refinements that let its four-speed motor cycle 1,500 square feet of air three times per hour. Still, the AeraMax SV is the office air purifier, and if you look for a residential product, perhaps the AeraMax 300 or even the new AeraMax SE is more suitable.

At $599, the AeraMax SV competes directly against the Levoit EverestAir and Blueair Classic Pro. Even the top dogs of the past stay strong with things like the Rabbit Air A3 or Airmega 400S. It’s high-range game, and they all are certified by the most trustworthy organizations. Can the AeraMax SV win, justified by its price? We shall see.

AeraMax SV Design and Size

Fellowes has also hit a nice balance in the physical design of the purifier, which has dialed back the boxy commercial bulk of the earlier AeraMax Pro models to more modest lines running across the side panels of the AeraMax SV.

The Fellowes AeraMax SV has a largely similar silhouette to its sibling, the AeraMax SE: a white-and-black tower with the controls and filter panels in the same general positions. There are several improvements, of course – for instance, the dual side intake panels now replace the SE’s single 360-degree air intake, and the control layout has been reorganized – but most are less immediately noticeable.

As you can guess, the AeraMax SV comes back to the traditional bottom-to-top airflow system concept, and dual air intake concept just like the famous Airmega 400S. It is highly efficient for utilizing the high fan power – something that the AeraMax SV can be proud of.

While a 31-inch tower with commercial proportions certainly commands floor presence, it’s a far cry from the early AeraMax Professional 4 which had such institutional bulk and ceiling-mount brackets they looked like medical-grade HVAC equipment. These proportions were refined over the AeraMax generations, and the clean, upright tower seen today is the result of a more home-office-friendly aesthetic.

One thing you must remember, due to the dual air intake nature of the AeraMax SV, we don’t recommend to put its sides to the wall. Other than that, the air purifier is easy to use with a top control panel.

AeraMax SV Filters

To decide the performance of one air purifier, the air filtration system is the most important factor. For the flagship air purifier, Fellowes decides to come back to traditional filtration system, so the AeraMax SV only has a 3-stage air filtration process.

  1. Pre-filter – The AeraMax SV uses the very same pre-filter from Sharp, which is highly effective against large particles of dust or pet hair.
  2. Activated Carbon filter – Removes smoke, odors and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
  3. True HEPA filter – The H13 HEPA filter of the AeraMax SV can trap 99.97% of any particles as small as 0.1 microns. It also includes the AeraSafe Antimicrobial Treatment – to prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria, mildew, and fungi.

Unlike the AeraMax SE, the AeraMax SV declines the signature PlasmaTrue technology of AeraMax, to return to traditional physical air filtration with only the 3-stage air filtration process. Not sure why the company decides to skip a signature feature, but the H13 HEPA filter is more than enough to do the job. It’s the common high-end grade of True HEPA filter to capture any particles down to 0.3 microns, as you can see from the chart below.

We put the AeraMax SV into the hardest test of Breathe Quality, yet the air purifier can go toe-to-toe with every flagship of famous air purifier brands we can access, from the Rabbit Air A3, Blueair Classic Pro and Medify MA-112 (v3.0). In 1 hour, the AeraMax SV can clean 99.95% of all particles down to 0.3 microns, nearly perfect.

Moreover, the AeraMax SV filter (9787902) lasts longer, up to 2 years to comply with the manufacturer’s suggestion. A pack costs a bit higher, however, for up to 2 years, it is quite acceptable.

AeraMax SV Room Coverage

The AeraMax SV is certified by AHAM tests to ensure the specs we see on promotion videos are correct. AHAM suggests the room coverage of the AeraMax SV up to 800 square feet, which is far better than most of its competitors. Fellowes tries to buff the number, and recommends us to run in 1500 square feet. Remember the AeraMax SV is described as an office air purifier – and this number isn’t lying.

The ACH of the AeraMax SV is 5X. If you are running the air purifier in the AHAM recommendation’s room coverage, the air purifier will clean air every 12 minutes.

The CADR of the AeraMax SV is 486 Dust/ 517 Smoke/ 514 Pollen (cfm). It is safe to say the AeraMax SV is among the large room air purifiers with best performance.

AeraMax SV Sound

By and large, the AeraMax SV runs at a much higher fan speed than the AeraMax SE and design-wise, both units share the same tower aesthetic. You can guess the AeraMax SV to make noise a bit worse than its smaller brother.

Hard truth is, even the SE isn’t the quietest air purifier on the market, and the AeraMax SV with noise level specs from 38.5 to 70 dB is far from good. On highest power, the AeraMax SV is very noisy, so make sure you don’t use it on your office’s reunions.

AeraMax SV Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifiers must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criterion to review in order to determine if this air purifier is good or not.

The AeraMax SV is an Energy Star air purifier, meaning it balances between power and energy consumption. We measure the power wattage of the AeraMax SV at maximum 85 watts, so it is top-tier in energy saving.

If you’re running the AeraMax SV at least 8 hours per day, you only need to pay $37 annually, not so much higher than the AeraMax SE.

AeraMax SV Additional Features

The AeraMax SV shows off the most smart features of Fellowes – the signature Smart Sensor named AeraSmart. However, it’s just a dust sensor, not as good as something in the Blueair Classic Pro. We still love the Smart Sensor of the AeraMax SV, because it manages to automate fan adjustments effectively.

We have the Child lock feature, which is not really fit the mantle of an office air purifier, but hey, sometimes your big boss need to give their children a tour.

The Timer function comes back to the flagship of AeraMax, and it is a much more convenient feature for professional workspaces. No need to remember who to turn off the air purifier after leaving the office, right?

Our verdict

This one’s easy: we feel the Fellowes AeraMax SV is one of if not the best large room air purifier given its coverage, filtration standard, and dual-panel airflow design. If you have a large space and need serious purification, there aren’t many better choices. However, it doesn’t have the top-tier additional features like the Blueair Classic Pro, so it’s one thing to bear in mind.
