Molekule made a great flagship to help battle against the COVID-19 pandemic (still air purifiers aren’t the absolute solutions to COVID-19 viruses, or else we didn’t need lockdown). The Molekule Air Pro fixed many potential flaws from the predecessors, but its fan power is still far from complete. Okay, get ready for our today Molekule Air Pro Review.

Molekule Air Pro Price

The Molekule Air Pro is a quantum leap better than the original Molekule Air. And it needs to be at nearly $1199, which is $400 higher than the previous model, to be better. Easily you get a bigger air purifier, and the bigger the better for sure. However, it doesn’t stop you from buying the future-proofed technology that can actually destroy the airborne pollutants like many RNA and DNA viruses, or formaldehyde.

It is sleek, though it doesn’t really feel like you own an air purifier from the future (I bet the Blueair HealthProtect 7770i and LG PuriCare AS560DWR0 are winners here), but it is truly a high-end device. Jaded about air purifiers? Think you’ve seen it all? Then this Molekule Air Pro is the cure, and though the PECO filter is still not perfect, that one piece of tech has truly wowed us. If only they can blow more power into the air purifier.

As the sequel of the original Molekule Air and the portable Molekule Air Mini, it comes with nearly all of the improvements we asked for many years. It has real Smart Sensor, which is necessary for an air purifier running 24/7. Actually the fan power gets improvement, making this air purifier an ideal device for medium-sized rooms.

But of course, with the PECO filter is still no better than the traditional PCO technology, you may ask why buy this Molekule Air Pro over the big, bulky, industrial things like Austin Air Bedroom Machine, Austin Air HealthMate Plus, Airpura UV600 and AllerAir 5000. Its nature competitors like the Airocide APS-200 and Airocide APS-200 PM 2.5 are also powerful at less price.

The Molekule Air Pro isn’t the strongest, or the smartest air purifier at a very high-range segment, making it far from appeal. But if you like the concept of PECO filter, like us, you should get the item from our deal, as you can return it easily.

Molekule Air Pro Design and Size

The Molekule Air Pro feels like Molekule’s vision of the future of air purifiers fully refined. Though this echoes our thoughts on the original Molekule Air as we said “you may skip the design section entirely to check the efficiency of this Molekule Air immediately”. You still want to do it this time, and… maybe you can because it’s naturally the same design as the old devices.

It needs to be bigger, of course, because the Molekule Air Pro targets larger spaces. It looks like a fatter Molekule Air at the same 23 inches in height, but it is larger 10.9 inches diameter for both width and depth. Such size gives the Molekule Air Pro a low profile in your large room.

It keeps the refined cylindrical shape of the original one, to maximize its fan power thanks to the 360° air intake. Remaining the same is the use of anodized aluminum for the body, making the air purifier far more premium than any plastic devices you can find for less than $600. However, the device is a fingerprint magnet.

The air sensor is located discreetly into the base, to ensure the accurate result of the Smart Sensor. However, it is quite difficult to clean the air sensor if necessary. Remember that Molekule Air Pro runs the traditional bottom-to-top air flow system concept, and I must say it is far less impressed as the LG PuriCare AS560DWR0, which I deem the best air purifier you should buy for around $1000.

You still have the vegan-leather handle to lift the Molekule Air Pro, but this time you need to lift 23 lbs. Enough to make you stronger everyday.

Molekule Air Pro Filters

The air filtration system is the heart of an air purifier, which decides its performance. Normally, we will check the quantity and quality of the device’s air filters, as well as the air filter types being used. The Molekule Air Pro features the exclusive PECO air filter, reducing the pre-filter from the original Molekule Air.

  1. PECO filter – By using an UV-C light filter, the PECO air filter can utilize free radicals to break down pollutants at a molecular level, including VOCs, bacteria, mold, viruses, and allergens. It also has a layer of HEPA filter outside to capture large particles, and slow down chemicals passing through the filter.

To simplify the air filter replacement, Molekule Air Pro has only one PECO filter, which is indeed a True HEPA filter with its heart is the PECO filtration. It is a big improvement, because the True HEPA filter allows capturing any airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns. Though Molekule doesn’t announce the grade of its HEPA filter, our tests can help you check its efficiency later.

But you buy the Molekule Air Pro because you’re interested in its PECO air filtration technology, right? The patented PECO technology, in short of Photo Electrochemical Oxidation, deprives from a well-known technology in air purifier world – the PCO (Photo Catalytic Oxidation). You can see this technology from a lot of air purifiers like Vornado PCO575DC or Airpura P600.

Technically, the PECO technology uses the reaction of titanium dioxide and UV-C light to create hydroxyl radicals (OH). The hydroxyl radicals are unstable molecules, therefore they are highly reactive, an will steal atom from the neighboring molecules (airborne pollutants), thus destroying the pollutants in the process.

The result of this process is carbon dioxide (CO2), water molecules (H2O) and any harmless trace elements from the biological particulates, such as bacteria, germs, viruses, mold spores, dust mites and even VOCs. If you read our article of HEPA filter, you will know that the sizes of these particles are smaller than 0.3 microns, in which the HEPA filter has less efficiency. Moreover, the process of PECO filter can destroy the contaminants, so it can’t get back to air by any means.

Yes. This is exactly what we wrote in the previous Molekule air purifier reviews. I really believe its concept of completely destroy the pollutants (transforming it into harmless particles) is the best way to end the air pollution. Even our best air purifier selections like the Blueair HealthProtect 7770i and IQAir HealthPro Plus that can easily leave 0% (yes 0%) of airborne contaminants in the air, the real pollutants are still lurking inside the air filter, degrading the air filter more and more.

That doesn’t mean you don’t need to replace the PECO filter, as the large dust still stack up from time to time. But you can be sure that you are free of chemicals and viruses. Common air purifiers use Activated Carbon filter to adsorb these contaminants, but it’s less effective than destroying them.

The improvement in choosing the air filter makes the Molekule Air Pro finally a decent air purifier, but it is still nowhere near the performance of even the low-end devices, not mentioning the top-notch flagships like Amaircare 4000, IQAir GC MultiGas or LG PuriCare AS560DWR0. However, it matches the performance of the industrial AeraMax Professional AM 2.

This time, Molekule doesn’t even mention the effectiveness of removing dust, smoke and pollen particles of the Molekule Air Pro, though I find the result indeed decent. Its formaldehyde’s removal performance is nearly similar to the original Molekule Air, and I must say it is because of its nature of PECO filter, not due to low fan power.

But it seems the PECO filtration system is super effective for killing viruses, bacteria, germs and mold spores. The original Molekule Air can kill 99.99% of these biological contaminants, after just one pass of air flow, so I can expect the Molekule Air Pro. Now I’m not defending the air purifier, but any company that showed enough evidence for their air purifiers is a lot trustworthy.

The air filter looks really like the Molekule Air Mini, which matches Molekule Air‘s performance with less fan power. You need to pay $150 for this filter and it can last for just 6 months. So the annual filter replacement is quite high, and its life time hints that the grade of HEPA filter is quite low.

Molekule Air Pro Room Coverage

This time Molekule Air Pro is recommended for rooms up to 1000 square feet. Though the large room coverage is quite a gimmick, because the air purifier only needs more time to clean larger space, this time the Molekule Air Pro is quite decent with its fan power.

The ACH of Molekule Air Pro is 3X to 4X.

The CADR of Molekule Air Pro isn’t clarified, as Molekule doesn’t send its units to the AHAM for testing. This time, the Molekule Air Pro is measured simply to achieve between 180 to 240 cfm in general.

Molekule Air Pro Sound

Higher fan power means noisier. The Molekule Air Pro is no exception. Its fan technology is improving from the original Molekule Air. Yes, it is different to the point it’s a lot more powerful, and the result is higher noise level. Even the lowest noise level is 33 decibels (db), which is still quiet but a lot higher than common air purifiers.

On highest speed, the noise level of this Molekule Air Pro reaches 64 decibels (db). Though it is white noise like any other fan-based power, but it is audible and you can’t sleep on it. Luckily, the Smart Sensor will keep the noise level as low as possible for you.

Molekule Air Pro Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.

Molekule Air Pro will increase the lowest power consumption at 26 watts and the highest at 123 watts. It is about 50% higher than the original Molekule Air‘s power consumption but that’s how you need for better system.

If you run the Molekule Air Pro for 8 hours per day, it would cost you $10 to $44 each year, depending on the most used fan speed.

Molekule Air Pro Additional Features

Molekule Air Pro shines above any of its predecessors, and really live up to its name “Pro” (sound like the iPhones of Apple) with its high-end additional features. The Smart Sensor is finally here, to help you keep check with the indoor air quality right on board, and it doesn’t do that just for showing. It will auto adjust the fan power to give you the best airflow for particle protection at noise levels.

It also has the quality of an air purifier with smartphone app, available for both iOS and Android. You can check device info, filter status and air particle levels even on the go.

Our verdict

While the Molekule Air Pro falls off behind the competition of things like the Blueair HealthProtect 7770i and LG PuriCare AS560DWR0 both in terms of performance and smart features, the PECO air filtration system truly has an upgrade. I guess that the technology is still two or three levels behind its perfect form.

However, I have faith in the Molekule company, and I look forward to using a top-notch Molekule Air in the near future, something not as terrible as the original Molekule Air.
