Airocide APS-200 Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

The cheaper Airocide APS-200 is Airocide’s top air purifier from 2014, marking a new era with attractive design and filter-less style. We can easily get hype by a NASA-funding device, but to spend a lot for an air purifier, we need to read our Airocide APS-200 Review first.

Airocide APS-200 ranks F in our air purifier ranking list, so we recommend you not to buy this product. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

Update: As the Airocide APS-200 appears to be fully sold out, I recommend properly checking our deal before reading this review, as the review itself is pretty lengthy.

Airocide is proud to be the only air purifier brand with a NASA lineage. The Airocide APS-200 is their most popular air purifier at the moment, but its price is still not for everyone. So why do we need an air purifier at such high cost? Let’s find out in our today Airocide APS-200 Review.

Other Airocide’s Air Purifier Reviews:

1, Airocide APS-200 PM 2.5 Review.

2, Airocide APS-300 Review.

Airocide APS-200 Price

The Airocide APS-200 – the successor of the very old Airocide GCS-100 – has gone from secondary device to firmly taking the limelight. This is the rebooted Airocide air purifier we’d been waiting for, the 2014 Edison Gold awarded for design and innovation.

But hey, it’s new era and we probably get acquainted with this design. We also have the next-gen Airocide APS-300 and the upgraded Airocide APS-200 PM 2.5 for better performance. However, don’t forget that the Airocide APS-200 is the first to praise for.

Actually, it was a huge gamble from Airocide, yet one that really paid off three months into our testing. Losing the traditional bulky design and altering the design was a dangerous move, but one that was sorely needed after years of similarity.

It’s impossible to give a perfect score to something that costs this much, as the Airocide APS-200 can be found at $799, but this is the closest to NASA air purifier perfection Airocide has ever got.

Well, you can easily choose the Molekule Air (or its bigger Molekule Air Pro for other Airocide devices) as the closest competitor to the Airocide APS-200. The Molekule’s PECO system is very similar to the traditional PCO technology from Airocide. It’s supposed to have higher fan power than our today Airocide APS-200, as well as a preliminary HEPA filter to trap large pollutants.

At this price range, the Airpura UV600 is hard to skip. It’s huge and heavy, but this is one of the most powerful commercial-grade air purifiers for your home. You can choose the AllerAir 6000, too, which adds UV-C light filter for killing biological pollutants.

For anyone who can’t live without the actual mechanical filter, you should either select the Blueair Classic 680i or Oransi EJ120. With large air filters and powerful fan motor, these air purifiers are excellent at trapping even airborne particles as small as 0.1 microns.

Airocide APS-200 Design and Size

The Airocide APS-200 was the huge leap forward that Airocide’s devices needed after seven years, and it’s even better because it won the Gold Award of Edison for Design and Innovation in 2014. It clearly has a bigger impact than the original air purifier back in 2007, and thus being the future of Airocide models’ design.

As the future of the air purifier, an embodiment of what the company has been trying to achieve for a decade, the Airocide APS-200 is all about premium parts and an all-new experience. You can place this air purifier both horizontally and vertically, and it still functions normally.

While the new parts of design are obvious, the Airocide APS-200 has also got the familiar shape, at 18.7 inches in height and 6.9 inches in width. It also weighs less than the previous GCS-100 model at only 9 lbs, so you can move it anywhere in your home.

Airocide APS-200 also features the very unique air flow direction. It draws in the polluted air from both top and bottom fans, then releases the fresh air from inside. It is more innovative than the common back-to-front air flow system concept from tower air purifier devices, and you can virtually put it anywhere in your home.

The device and its successors, the Airocide APS-200 PM 2.5 and Airocide APS-300, have a woodgrain sleeve. It blends in any decoration very easily, and you can place it on desk or wall, thanks to the attached accessories.

You can find the power button from the back, and the control panel from inside the air purifier. Certainly, the Airocide APS-200 is the most special air purifier I’ve reviewed for the last 3 years.

Airocide APS-200 Filters

Together with the Molekule Air, Airocide APS-200 is special because this air purifier is meant for eliminating the tiny particles completely. Inside the standard Airocide APS-200 is only one filter, but this is the most important part of the device.

  1. PCO chamber – The advanced PCO technology made by Airocide APS-200 is able to eliminate virtually 100% of harmful pathogens and other allergens like mold, viruses, bacteria and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

PCO technology was born to kill what HEPA filter can’t trap. This technology was discovered long ago by Japanese scientists, and the technology we have in this Airocide APS-200 was refined by NASA, to convert damaging molds, microorganisms, dangerous pathogens, destructive VOCs and biological gasses into harmless water vapor.

To explain further, the PCO chamber inside Airocide APS-200 contains hollow glass tubes, which are coated with a catalyst. This catalyst can make a chemical process called Photo Catalytic Oxidation (PCO), as it creates hydroxyl radicals (OH) and steals atom from the neighboring molecules (airborne pollutants), thus destroying the pollutants in the process.

Well, the byproducts of this process is normally carbon dioxide (CO2) and water molecules (H2O). Airocide APS-200 emits no ozone, certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and approved by the FDA.

Problem is, it’s really hard to make a test to check the actual performance of the Airocide APS-200. It tends to clean your home slower, but it can eliminate the ultra-fine particles like viruses and chemicals, something that can bypass the normal HEPA filter.

With the 254-nm bulbs, the Airocide APS-200 also adds dwell time to the process to ensure elimination of high volume bio-particulate. If you want to read the thorough tests for the Airocide air purifiers, I recommend to check this.

You still need to replace the reaction chamber kit after 12 months of use. Well, I guess this is exactly the filter replacement made only by Airocide.

Airocide APS-200 Room Coverage

Airocide APS-200, just like its brothers and any common PCO air purifiers, is built to run 24/7. It is suggested to run for any large rooms, up to even 4000 square feet. However, if you want a quick and stable air cleaning, I recommend to run this air purifier in rooms of only 200 square feet.

The ACH of Airocide APS-200 is 1X. It tends to exchange the air only once per hour.

The CADR of Airocide APS-200 is measured to be only 25 cfm. That’s why the air purifier needs to run 24/7 for constant performance. In short time (like in our test), the Airocide APS-200 shows a poor performance, even lower than the Molekule Air.

Airocide APS-200 Sound

Airocide APS-200 is super quiet when running on lowest fan speed. You won’t notice any sound when it’s on this fan speed, because the sound level is just only 25 decibels (db). It’s more likely the whisper.

In real-world use, the highest noise level of this Airocide APS-200 is audible, but at 53 decibels, you can even sleep with such white noise.

Airocide APS-200 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.

Airocide APS-200 isn’t an Energy Star air purifier, and it could cause trouble because we need to run it 24/7. Luckily, the power consumption is easy to handle, as it’s only from 40 to 60 watts.

If you run the Airocide APS-200 for at least 8 hours per day, it would cost you $14 to $21 each year.

Airocide APS-200 Additional Features

Airocide APS-200 is simple air purifier with ease of use in mind. However, it features a very unique Auto Mode. Thanks to the light sensor, the air purifier can adjust its fan speed automatically to accommodate your schedule. By default, the Airocide APS-200 will always be on highest speed. Whenever it senses no light, it will run on low mode.

Airocide APS-200 also has a LED indicator for chamber replacement, to remind you when you need to change the chamber kit.

Our verdict

Let’s get one thing out of the way first: the Airocide APS-200 is not an air purifier for the HEPA fans. This is the air purifier for someone who’s entrenched in the new air filtration technology, because they have become bored to tears by the same old marketing made for HEPA filter.

However, the Airocide APS-200 is built to run 24/7, and it can cost you a lot more than other air purifier devices. It doesn’t have a pre-filter to trap large dust and pet hair, and the accumulation of these impurities still causes annoyance. It fails in both performance and annual cost tests of Breathe Quality.

Is it perfect? Of course not – it’s so, so expensive. And the Airocide APS-200 is the most affordable air purifier you can get from this brand. It isn’t cheap to maintain it, however, because you still need to replace the chamber kit once a year.
