Medify MA-50 Price

The Medify MA-50 makes a strong case for itself to compete in the upper mid-range. It builds up higher fan power while running the same H13 True HEPA filter plus the first-time UV-C light bulb (not anymore, the Medify MA-50 now consists of only mechanical filter, you should look for the Medify MA-40 UV for this feature). However, its Smart features still remain the Achilles heel of the device, and puts it behind the competition. Overall, it is an extremely enjoyable air purifier that is worth considering at its price.

When Medify Air announced the price of the Medify MA-50 to be $399, it raised quite a few eyebrows. What about the Medify MA-440, which is constantly out of stock? Perhaps, we will say good bye to the old product which doesn’t resemble any other Medify Air brothers.

It is, indeed, released with the new wall-mounted Medify MA-35 at nearly the same price, which this company is vying for a piece of better performance to run in mid-range segment. As unwelcome as other budget devices, this wasn’t really a surprise – In fact, this had always been its mission: to create premium devices and eventually go up the price ladder while focusing on the experience.

As a result, the Medify MA-50 v3.0 gets a new price: $299. It is a lot easier to purchase the air purifier at this price point, though it’s still higher enough to compete against the Levoit Core 600S, Blue Pure 211i Max and Winix 9800 – the top-tier products that compete directly against the Medify MA-50.

Medify MA-50 Design and Size

There is, almost, no difference from the new Medify MA-50 with the last year’s Medify MA-25 and Medify MA-15. There’s no getting around it, aside from the obviously bigger size.

That’s more likely to expect from a device that takes only 1 year to develop, as it has the same plastic build that is dated from the first Medify MA-40, to the point that the company still keeps the image of this old product in the Medify MA-50 product page. It looks like the bigger MA-25 with a screen to show you the current fan speed. That’s sad, because we expect such important information like the current PM 2.5 ratio in indoor air.

At 21 inches, this air purifier looks similar to the MA-40. It also uses the glass touch control panel to make it more premium. The control panel lies beneath the top air grill, which reminds me most of the predecessors of this Medify MA-50.

Inheriting so much from its predecessor isn’t a bad thing, and in fact, the Medify MA-50 has one thing to make its price legit: the 4-side intake design. It runs the common bottom-to-top air flow system concept which will never disappoint anyone. Actually, I love such common system than the reversed one of MA-25 or the simple one of the first MA-40. It makes the Medify MA-50 indeed the mid-range version of the flagship Medify MA-112.

At 17 lbs, the Medify MA-50 isn’t exactly a light device. It doesn’t have such convenient handle to help you carry around your home.

Medify MA-50 Filters

With the new 4-side air filter, the Medify MA-50 can maximize its fan power to thoroughly clean your rooms. The Medify MA-50 comes back to the “pure mechanical filter” code that the company keeps for several models. Now, you will have a 3-stage air cleaning system in this air purifier.

1. Pre-filter – A layer of pre-filter covers the True HEPA filter, to prolong the life time of the core filter, by trapping the large objects of pollutants like fur, hair and large dust.
2. True HEPA filter – The True HEPA filter (graded H13) captures 99.97% of as small as 0.3 microns allergens, virus particles, pollen, mold and fungi particles.
3. Activated Carbon filter – Uses substantial carbon filter with carbon pellets to remove toxic odors, smoke and formaldehyde.

Medify Air adds the UV-C air filter in their new air purifier is a way to deal with viruses in the era of COVID-19 pandemic. However, as we stated earlier, COVID-19 viruses is spread primarily via respiratory droplets – the liquid released from someone’s coughing, sneezing and talking. Air purifiers don’t completely wipe out such viruses from infecting you. As a result, in this Medify MA-50 v3.0, we won’t see the UV-C light filter anymore.

With the latest version of the Medify MA-50 around, we make a new test for the air purifier. As a result, it does quite similarly to the original Medify MA-50 at the same test, and after 1 hour.

The filter of the Medify MA-50, again, discourages anyone to buy this air purifier. It costs $69, and asks you to change it every 4 months, to comply the Lifetime Warranty of Medify Air.

Medify MA-50 Room Coverage

The Medify MA-50 comes with a little more “honest” room coverage suggestion from the company: 550 square feet. I have checked and found out that Medify Air is giving more accurate technical specifications in their website. This is a good sign to get the air purifier from this company.

And the company did it, sending all Medify air purifiers to be tested and verified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). The Medify MA-50 v3.0 is recommended for rooms of 545 square feet, which is larger than its original version.

The ACH of the Medify MA-50 is 5X. If the Medify MA-25 does only two exchanges in 1 hour, it can cover a space of 1000 square feet.

The CADR of the Medify MA-50 is 379 Dust/ 352 Smoke/ 397 Pollen (cfm). The number is very impressive, even against the best ones in its price point.

Medify MA-50 Sound

Medify Air isn’t really a brand of making quiet air purifier, but the Medify MA-50 keeps the same noise as other compact devices in the same line. Its lowest noise level is 35 decibels (dB), which is the library noise level, and it’s not really bad.

On highest speed, the noise level reaches 66 decibels, which is noisy enough to never run it on maximum speed while sleeping.

Medify MA-50 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.

The power consumption of the Medify MA-50 is 58 watts, and this air purifier is an Energy Star product. At higher fan power as the Honeywell HPA300, it has around 1/3 power consumption. To be fair, its maximum speed consumes less energy even than the great Coway AP-1512HH.

Medify MA-50 Additional Features

Sadly, a $399 air purifier like the Medify MA-50 doesn’t have any smart features. Well, the Blue Pure 121 doesn’t have either, but it has higher performance than the Medify MA-50, as well as smaller footprint. A newcomer without Smart features at the moment like this Medify MA-50 is certainly unwelcomed.

Just like other basic Medify Air products, the Medify MA-50 has a Child lock function and a 2-12 hour timer. There is also Nightlight function, but it is not really suitable for such a big device.

Our verdict

The Medify MA-50 is the ninth device of Medify Air, which is really great for a company that’s founded in 2017.
