Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 Price

Last year’s Rowenta PU3030 was a decent air purifier. It married striking console air purifier design and an even more stable power consumption. However, while it was undeniably good there was still some room for improvement, as being a flagship air purifier many hoped for the NanoCaptur technology – an exclusive filter developed with years of researching in a French laboratory shared by the CNRS (the French National Center for Scientific Research).

And yes, Rowenta PU3040 returns what Rowenta is famous for. If you think it’s only seen a small number boost in its name, and if you assumed that meant that not much had changed, well, you are half wrong half right.

But before we discuss more about what changes and what remains in this Rowenta Pure Air PU3040, let’s take a look at its price. Rowenta doesn’t officially announce the price for any of their air purifiers (they don’t even sell online), so the price of Rowenta PU3040 varies from different websites. You can check our deal, which can sometimes go as low as just $229.

For some unknown reasons, you can only find this air purifier on official Rowenta website for the U.S region. If you are readers from Europe or Asia, you may unable to find a deal for this air purifier.

This used to be a problem when the is quite expensive with its low fan power, and the Rowenta PU3040 needs to compete against the Trusens Z-3000, Alen BreatheSmart FLEX, Bissell air400, Oreck Air Response Large and Medify MA-40. These air purifiers are all from native American manufacturers, so they are backed up with a more convenient customer service than the Rowenta PU3040.

Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 Design and Size

At first sight you might almost not separate the Rowenta PU3040 with its brother – the Rowenta PU3030. They both use the same console air purifier design style, which make me think of the Honeywell HPA300 and Inofia PM1320. In fact, for the rest of this section, if you finished reading the review of Rowenta PU3030, you can skip it completely.

However, I didn’t say that the design of Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 isn’t good. In fact, it is much easier to match any decors than any of its previous brothers, like the Rowenta PU4020 or Rowenta PU6020. The size of this air purifier is also common, with the height of 22.6 inches and the width of 17 inches.

Despite incorporating only plastic for the air purifier, the Rowenta PU3040 is actually design-wise, with small perforated holes for the air intake, to act as one more pre-filter. The air sensors are located right beside the air intake, to give you accurate information about the air quality index.

Rowenta PU3040 sports the bottom-to-top air flow system concept, like any normal console air purifiers. The top air outlet has wavy grills, which are really stylish and unique. Unfortunately, Rowenta hasn’t gone the grill adjustment like in its tower models, so technically, the Rowenta PU3040 is one step behind the previous well-known Rowenta air purifiers.

On top, we have the same control panel like the PU3030 model. Again, I don’t feel the new Rowenta PU3040’s control panel as simple and clear as the tower models of Rowenta.

Coming in at 17.5 lbs, the Rowenta PU3040 is not so light, and it is the heaviest air purifier in the whole Rowenta family.

Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 Filters

Arguably Rowenta didn’t need to go all out and change so many things for the Rowenta Pure Air PU3040, because their signature NanoCaptur technology is still one of the best ways to deal with formaldehyde. Though it seems like a missed opportunity to better German air filtration systems, we all agree that the 4-stage air cleaning system of Rowenta PU3040 is very powerful.

1. Pre-filter – A washable pre-filter traps the larger objects of pollutants like fur, hair and large dust.
2. Activated Carbon filter – The honeycombed carbon filter catches odors, gases and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
3. True HEPA filter – With the True HEPA filter, this air purifier can capture 99.95% of as small as 0.3 microns allergens, virus particles, pollen, mold and fungi particles.
4. NanoCaptur filter – This exclusive patented filter can permanently destroy formaldehyde, at rate of 99.99%.

First, you should know about the NanoCaptur technology. As the unique filter made with 10 years of researching by Rowenta, this technology is a mechanical type, consisting of minuscule granules that made of nanoporous materials. Normally, other air purifiers brands will coat the surface of these pores with the granule carbon, but Rowenta uses probe molecules, which can chemically react with formaldehyde. As a result, formaldehyde will be destroyed.

This NanoCaptur technology has a clear advantage than the normal Activated Carbon filter, as it destroy the formaldehyde permanently, while the latter only traps the formaldehyde. Well, you should prefer the process to destroy, so the formaldehyde can’t be released back to your indoor air.

In the same test with other Rowenta brothers – 150 square feet room coverage, the Rowenta PU3040 had high efficiency of trapping 99.92% of any particles down to 0.3 microns, in just 1 hour. Well, it was better than other American air purifiers like the Bissell air320 and Oransi OV200.

Just like the Rowenta PU3030, our today reviewed Rowenta PU3040 will use the same HEPA and carbon filters. The Rowenta XD6231 costs $49, and is recommended for 1 year.

Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 Room Coverage

The Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 is a strong air purifier, which is strictly tested and certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). Through the test, we could know that this air purifier is designed for only 243 square feet, which is a bit lower than the Rowenta PU3030.

The ACH of Rowenta PU3040 is 10X. This is the highest air changes per hour rating in the whole Rowenta family, as the Rowenta PU3040 can clean your room every 6 minutes.

The CADR of Rowenta PU3040 is 161 Dust/ 157 Smoke/ 167 Pollen (cfm). Actually, the fan power is just decent, and I have checked a lot of better air purifiers for fan power, with much cheaper price. You should look for Coway AP-1512HH, Winix 5500-2 or Airthereal AGH550 instead.

Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 Sound

The Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 makes a fairly quiet air purifier, with a noise level on lowest speed to be just 24 decibels (db). This is the noise level recorded for the whisper, and I believe you can easily sleep with Rowenta PU3040 on this mode.

Even on highest speed, the Rowenta PU3040 isn’t the biggest problem for you. It has much lower noise level than the giant Rowenta PU6020, with only 50 decibels. To help you imagine better, this is just like the noise of normal conversation between two people. Some people are even acquainted with the highest fan power, as this is just the white noise, and can sleep easily with this mode.

Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 Power Consumption

One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.

All Rowenta air purifiers are certified as the Energy Star devices, so the flagship Rowenta PU3040 doesn’t want to be out of group. Its power consumption is only 68 watts, and it is much better than the rated power of 80 watts from Rowenta PU6020.

For quick math, if you run the Rowenta PU3040 8 hours per day, you need to pay $24 each year.

Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 Additional Features

There is no need to check this section if you are familiar with the Rowenta PU3030, because apart from the NanoCaptur technology, these air purifiers are basically one model.

In general, I am quite fond of the Smart Sensor made by Rowenta. With both dust and gas sensors, the Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 can give accurate result of air quality index in your room. If you activate the Auto Mode, this air purifier can automatically adjust the fan speed to match the environment.

The best part? Rowenta PU3040 allows you to change the Auto Mode setting, to help you monitor the air quality much better. There are 2 different auto modes in this air purifier: Daytime mode with medium and high fan power, while nighttime mode with low or medium fan power.

To help you run the Rowenta PU3040 in bedroom, there is one manual Dimmer button to reduce the light intensity of this air purifier. You can also schedule the time off with its Timer function, to turn the device off after 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours.

Finally, you have the LED indicators, to remind you when to change the air filters.

Our verdict

The Rowenta Pure Air PU3040 is something of an oddity. For an air purifier that is presumably meant to be Rowenta’s flagship for the masses – as the name would suggest – it’s been approached rather conservatively.

The designs and additional features are for the most part identical to last year’s model and are really starting to feel a bit dated. Perhaps it’s difficult for Rowenta to create new design. In fact, both sections are okay, but the users need more to choose it instead of the previous Rowenta PU3030.

Well, perhaps the good news is you get back the NanoCaptur technology. However, Rowenta PU3040 still has the same weak fan power, which we hope to see a better boost in future devices.
