The Bissell air400 24791 has a premium design and costs less than what you’d expect. It’s great at beautifying your home with a modern design, something that Bissell really want to focus on. It is still the strongest air purifier of this family in everything, even when the Bissell air220 and Bissell air320 have been released not long ago. So, let’s check the current flagship model of this company, in our today Bissell air400 Review.

Bissell is currently the number one manufacturer for floor care products in the North America market, spreading to more than 30 countries all over the world. However, in the air purifier field, the company isn’t truly the expert, but we all believe in their HEPA filter and fan motor – the core of one air purifier. It’s time for the Bissell air400 Review.

Bissell air400 24791 Price
With no “A” in the model name, the Bissell air400 24791 is quite different to others. In fact, this is the first air purifier that Bissell introduced to the difficult market of the United States. It packs everything that you would need from a mid-range air purifier: high fan power, decent room coverage and a very, very good air filtration system.
When the Bissell MyAir is targeting pricing strategy, other models from Bissell, including of Bissell air400, ask you for the money of mid-range budget. Even though the Bissell air400 is an old model, if you look at the specs sheet, you can know it is still the most powerful air purifier of Bissell family.
The official price of Bissell air400 is $349, the same as the Bissell air320. You can also check our deal, for the price going as low as $279. Unlike the new air purifiers, the Bissell air400 packs with even 6 fan speeds (instead of 5 like its brothers) and an unique Timer setting.
Still, at the same price, the Bissell air400 doesn’t have the same performance level as the likes of Medify MA-40, Airthereal AGH550, Coway AP-1512HHS, Hathaspace Air Purifier 2.0 and TruSens Z-3000. So, just like the newer brother, we only count on the budget to decide which one to get.

Bissell air400 24791 Design and Size
While the Bissell air400 has an elegant design, it won’t necessarily turn heads. It’s definitely more premium than what is expected out of an air purifier in it’s price range, but it’s an air purifier that will disappear among all other air purifiers that look like it.
At 27.2 inches in height and 18.9 inches in width, this Bissell air400 is huge, certainly containing a big fan inside. It has a rectangular shape with a titanium color. Honestly, I quite like the matte black color in this air purifier, as it gives a premium feeling of a all-metal device. But the overall body, Bissell gives their most popular air purifier a look of something much cheaper.
The focal point in this popular design could be air quality display on front of Bissell air400, both in digital and color-coded readings. Moving to the sides, you can see its air intake, for the common bottom-to-top air flow system concept. There is an air sensor beside the air intake, to help you monitor the air quality index.
On top of this air purifier, we have a simple control panel, located above the top air outlet.
The Bissell air400 weighs 26.5 lbs, which is truly heavy. You need double the carry handles to lift this air purifier to other room.

Bissell air400 24791 Filters
The Bissell air400 is reliable, as it is certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for safe ozone emission, thanks to its use of only mechanical filters. Running the simple 3-stage air filtration system, the Bissell air400 is still the most powerful air purifier of the family.
- Pre-filter – A pre-filter is used to capture the large objects of pollutants, like pet hair, fur and large dust. It is washable and permanent to use.
- HEPA filter – With the pleated High Efficiency filter, the Bissell air400 can trap 99.7% of 0.3 microns particles or larger.
- Activated Carbon Filter – Engineered with actual pieces of carbon, the honeycombed Activated Carbon filter can capture odor causing gases and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Bissell air400 performs a lot better than both the new Bissell air220 and Bissell air320 in the same conditions, a room of 200 square feet and a duration of 1 hour. As you can see, the air purifier scored 99.9% for trapping any particles down to 0.3 microns, in just 1 hour. Such efficiency was even higher than the Vornado PCO300 and Oreck Air Response Large, not to mention the cheaper TruSens Z-2000. It’s the same performance as the Vornado AC550, however, which has a much cheaper price tag.
With bigger size than its brothers, the Bissell air400 requires a different set of air filters, but you still need to replace the filter once every 6 months. The new HEPA filter costs you just $25, which is not much expensive from the smaller air filters of air220 and air320 models.

Bissell air400 24791 Room Coverage
The Bissell air400 is recommended for medium to large rooms between 300 and 400 square feet, suggested by the manufacturer. However, it seems Bissell recently made some bold claims about the room coverage of their mid-range air purifiers, as the room coverage of Bissell air400 can reach 1200 square feet.
The ACH of Bissell air400 is 1X to 3X. If the air purifier is running in the standard room size of 400 square feet, it can clean the room every 20 minutes. But if you put the Bissell air400 in a room of 1200 square feet, it will clean only one time per hour.
The CADR of Bissell air400 is 307 Dust/ 279 Smoke/ 206 Pollen (cfm). The Pollen-free CADR rating of this Bissell air400 is surprisingly low, when compared with other CADR specs. However, you shouldn’t worry about the performance of this Bissell air400, as it certainly cover the suggested room size with no problem.

Bissell air400 24791 Sound
Bissell has a dedicated Sleep Mode for all their air purifiers, so they can keep the high fan power as silent as possible. The company truly cares about such feature, as they advertise the whisper-quiet operation in all air purifier products.
It seems the Bissell air400 has the best Sleep Mode of all three console air purifiers made by the American company. Its lowest noise level is just only 30 decibels (db), which is exactly like the whisper. You won’t notice the air purifier running for sure.
However, the Bissell air400 has 5 different fan speeds, and it can go as high as 65 decibels – the threshold of common noise. This could be the Max Mode of Bissell air400, to quickly clean your home, and you shouldn’t run this setting when sleeping.

Bissell air400 24791 Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review if this air purifier is good or not.
One of the key aspects of Bissell air400 is its energy saving feature. Using a DC motor, the Bissell air400 keeps the power consumption to be 108 watts, which is a bit better than the Bissell air320. Still, the power consumption is too high for an air purifier with such average fan power in the market.
Actually, the Bissell air400 is licensed as an Energy Star air purifier, but for some reason, you can’t find the Bissell air400 in Energy Star official listing.
If you use the Bissell air400 for 8 hours per day, you need to pay $39 annually.

Bissell air400 24791 Additional Features
Needless to say, the Bissell air400 features everything this company could provide you up until now. The main selling point is the Automated CirQulate System, which is the iconic Smart Sensor of Bissell. It gives you the air quality readings both in digital and color-coded feedback, then adjusts the right fan speed automatically for you. No more wondering if your air purifier is working.
You should remember to check the sensor screen, and if it’s dirty, you need to clean it with a cotton swab for more accurate readings of the product.
The Bissell air400 has up to 5 different fan speed, with one Max Mode to quick clean your room, and one Silent Mode to deliver the Library Quiet operation. Also, just like the Bissell air320, this Bissell air400 has a Night Mode, which is activated by a light sensor. As less light saturates a room, both the white lights on the control panel and the air quality display will turn off.
The Bissell air400 offers a basic Timer, to schedule the time off after 1, 4 or 8 hours. Finally, there are still LED indicators for filter replacement, to remind you when to change the air filters.
Bissell air400 24791 Customer Service
Bissell is really strong at customer service, as the company doesn’t sell product in only the U.S, but also 31 different countries in the world. They also have an active community – the Bissell Pet Foundation, with a mission to help save homeless pets. The company has actually saved more than 215,000 shelter pets.
For every order over $40, you will get a Free Shipping, and no coupon code is required. Also, you are free to order a refund within 30 days from the delivery date of your original purchase. If you want to arrange an at-home pick-up of your return, you need to pay $4.95.
Any questions for Bissell can be done by contacting them via phone at 800-237-7691, or via email at their Contact Us page. You can ask the Bissell experts whenever possible from Bissell Service Center near you.
The warranty for Bissell air purifier is varied from product to product. At the moment, it is limited to 1 year for the Bissell MyAir, 2 years for the Bissell air400, 3 years for the Bissell air220 and 5 years for the Bissell air320. Remember to activate the warranty, and get a $10 OFF for your next accessories purchase.
We’re seeing a trend where you’re getting pretty good air purifiers for much lesser than you’d expect and the Bissell air400 24791 pushes down that road. Priced at $279, it offers a decent buck for your bang. It has a reliable holistic, yet premium design, a very good fan power and a great Sleep Mode experience.
Where the air purifier feels underwhelming is with its HEPA filter’s performance as well as high power consumption. The general consumer would believe in the efficiency test, and they should buy the other air purifiers like Sharp FP-A80UW or Winix HR900 over this air purifier.

Deserve the flagship title of Bissell, but it needs more for the competition.
