AllerAir AirMed 3 Price

It’s clear to see what AllerAir’s approach is. Just like the Austin Air and Airpura, this air purifier company wants to give little effort in changing the design. Instead, they provide a wide range of air filtration to match specific needs.

Our previous AllerAir AirMed is meant for the everyday air cleaning in a small room, but what if you need a special treatment that even the Supreme version is unable to give? So we have the AllerAir AirMed 3, a compact air purifier with double the filtration capacity of carbon filter. The result, this is a great personal air purifier with more heavy-duty filtration.

So the solution is pretty obvious for anyone, and you can call and speak with AllerAir specialist to be sure if the AllerAir AirMed 3 is right for you. This air purifier starts at $449, for the non-UV Exec version, and can go as high as $729 for the AllerAir AirMed 3 Supreme Vocarb, with UV germicidal light add-on. You can look below for all the variations of the AllerAir AirMed 3 series, to see which air purifier is suitable for your need.

Well, with at least $100 more expensive than the predecessor, AllerAir AirMed 3 is a strong competitor with the Austin Air Allergy Machine Jr or Austin Air HealthMate Plus Jr. If you buy the ultimate AllerAir AirMed 3 Supreme version, you will have a compact air purifier with the price tag of high-end things like Austin Air HealthMate Plus, Alen BreatheSmart 75i, Medify MA-112 or AIRMEGA 400, so you should check the information carefully.

We also notice the presence of the Dyson Pure Cool Tower and Dyson Pure Cool Link in the same price range. These air purifiers, besides the True HEPA filter, are having an amazing cooling fan power to help you survive the summer time. The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool, with a little bit higher cost, will come with the heating power as well.

AllerAir AirMed 3 Design and Size

If you come here from the previous review of AllerAir AirMed, you can skip this section entirely because the AllerAir AirMed 3 is built based on the design concept of the first model. For the Supreme version, there is no difference at all.

Making air purifiers with the same housing and finishing is probably the most classic way in air purifier industry. Air purifier differs from others by air filters, not fan power.

Okay, so we are having a full-metal air purifier, with powder-coated paint to prevent any off gassing. This air purifier is also recyclable due to the materials, and finally, the life of the True HEPA filter extends greatly.

Again, we have a 360° air distribution system for this AllerAir AirMed 3, using perforated holes to increase the efficiency of trapping small contaminants. This is also the most powerful air flow system concept available, because you can put the air purifier anywhere and the efficiency remains the same.

To control the air purifier, we will have a simple knob. It is shared in even high-end models like AllerAir 4000, AllerAir 5000 or AllerAir 6000.

AllerAir AirMed 3 has the same dimensions as the first model, with 16 inches in height for the standard version, and 19 inches for the AllerAir AirMed 3 Supreme. However, the weight of this air purifier increases due to larger Activated Carbon filter, thus the compact AirMed 3 weighs 20 lbs, while the Supreme version weighs 25 lbs.

AllerAir AirMed 3 Filters

One of the many main reasons to buy an air purifier from AllerAir, Austin Air or Airpura is the top-notch quality of their air filtration systems. In this AllerAir AirMed 3, we still have this perfect system, with the core of a True HEPA filter and customized Activated Carbon filter.

  1. Pre-filter – First, we will have a poly pre-filter to capture large particles and prevent the main filters from clogging with pollutants. The pre-filter is necessary to extend the life of the main filters, and you need to change it every 3 months.
  2. True HEPA filter – The AllerAir AirMed 3 uses a Super HEPA filter to remove fine airborne particulates, with high efficiency of 99.99% for any particles down to 0.1 microns.
  3. Activated Carbon Filter – The high-quality Activated Carbon filter, either of virgin coconut (Exec) or virgin bituminous coal (Vocarb) to deal with chemicals, gases and odors.
  4. UV-C light filter – You can optionally choose the UV-C light bulb, to neutralize biological contaminates with ease.

In the AllerAir AirMed 3 and AllerAir AirMed 3 Supreme, we won’t have the basic True HEPA filter like the previous AllerAir AirMed. Instead, this air purifiers uses Super HEPA filter, which is claimed to be the highest-quality HEPA filter available. But why? The AllerAir’s Super HEPA is made of self-contained, strong mesh of fibers that does not require any chemical binders or casings. As a result, the Super HEPA will clean the air while not adding any further chemicals to the air.

Back to the main selling point of this air purifier, we will have larger Activated Carbon filter with granular carbon to do some better filtration of chemicals and odors. AllerAir AirMed 3 provides a carbon filter with 3-inch bed depth, which is required to do advanced filtration against above average levels of chemicals, gases and odors.

The AllerAir AirMed 3 contains 12 lbs of granular carbon, which is exactly the level of a $1299 IQAir GC MultiGas, while the Supreme version is even better, with 15 lbs of granular carbon. You will have two options: either the Exec version, with virgin coconut carbon to deal with normal odors from pets, cooking or smoke. Or you can upgrade to the Vocarb version, which is the high-quality virgin bituminous coal that can adsorb any gasses, odors and chemicals (including of VOCs and formaldehyde, etc).

Finally, we still have an optional UV-C air filter to buy with the AllerAir AirMed 3. This additional lamp is good at neutralizing the live contaminants that pass through the rays, including bacteria and viruses. However, if you have MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities), you should avoid this filter because it can emit ozone. The AllerAir AirMed family is the only one without certified of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to comply the safe ozone emission.

Our testing unit is just the AllerAir AirMed 3 Exec, and I did a same test with it as the previous model, in a room of 100 square feet and for 1 hour. Again, I run the Austin Air HealthMate Jr and Oransi Max to compare the performance of this air purifier. As you can see from the chart below, the Super HEPA works actually in capturing fine particulates, and the efficiency of the test is 99.98%.

allerair airmed 3 review

The AllerAir AirMed 3 is a mid-range air purifier, not to mention the ultimate version of the AllerAir AirMed 3 Supreme is even among high-range devices, so the cost of the air filter is higher than normal. The Super HEPA will cost you $53 for the Standard version, and $71 for Supreme version. Also for the Activated Carbon filter, the Exec filter costs you $114/$142 and the Vocarb costs $175/$219. But you shouldn’t worry about the high upfront cost, because the HEPA filter can last for 2 years, and the carbon filter can last for up to 5 years, making the annual replacement cost is actually smaller.

AllerAir AirMed 3 Room Coverage

From this section to the end, the AllerAir AirMed 3 is just like the previous model. That being said, you can use this air purifier in a room of 375 square feet, based on the ceiling of 8 ft as usual.

The ACH of AllerAir AirMed 3 is 2X to 4X. The highest air changes per hour rating is applied for the AllerAir AirMed 3 Supreme, to exchange the air every 15 minutes.

The CADR of AllerAir AirMed 3 is 100 cfm in general. This CADR rating is really, really low, so you should only use this device as a personal air purifier.

AllerAir AirMed 3 Sound

Using the same fan motor from the predecessor, AllerAir AirMed 3 can’t escape the reality of high noise level. The best advice is to use this device on lowest speed as much as possible, because the noise level is quite reasonable as 40 decibels (db). This is such noise level of library, and you should be okay with its operation.

However, if you run the device at the highest setting, the noise level can reach 60 decibels, which is also the noise level of the public restaurant, or the office. Many people will consider this sound too loud, and may find it annoying.

AllerAir AirMed 3 Power Consumption

In Breathe Quality, one of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?”. In fact, an air purifier needs to run for a long time (usually more than 8 hours) to be efficient, and therefore, power consumption is an important criteria to decide which air purifier to buy.

As a compact air purifier, the AllerAir AirMed 3 has a power consumption of only 34 watts. If you want to save your energy bill, this air purifier is right for you.

For running an AllerAir AirMed 3 8 hours per day, you need to pay only $12 annually.

AllerAir AirMed 3 Additional Features

This section is similar in all air purifiers of AllerAir family. As the leading company in high-end air purifiers, the AllerAir said no to any kinds of fancy features, be it the Smart Sensor or anything else. We all know that the AllerAir AirMed 3 is not the first one to do that, and probably not the last one.

There won’t be even the filter replacement indicator or the Timer. There is only one manual knob to change the fan speed of this machine.

As the leading air purifier company in the North America, AllerAir strongly focuses on the customer service. They ensure to give you not only the finest product in the world, but also the most comprehensive support policy as possible.

Their main selling point is the deepest carbon beds on the market, with up to 40 different proprietary carbon blends. To back up the high-quality air filters, they dare to give you difference back PLUS one air purifier for free, for any competitor’s unit with more relevant carbon + HEPA filtration at a lower price. So to say, AllerAir is really confident about their pricing policy.

All air purifiers in the AirMed 1 and AirMed 3 only receive an 1-year warranty on both parts and labor.

Our verdict

With better performance than the first AllerAir AirMed, AllerAir AirMed 3 is a great option for anyone who need more heavy-duty filtration in a portable format. Other than that, it is nowhere near the same performance of the AllerAir 5000 – the successful series that can delete the old AllerAir 4000 Series completely in the original website. The high price over the power is a main drawback for anyone who want to try the AllerAir AirMed 3, and I believe this air purifier is just another bait to hook customers into the powerful AllerAir AirMedic 5.
