This Bissell air220 is a well-made low-range air purifier, designed to give you the look and feel of an expensive classic air purifier, while cutting down some of the bits and bobs inside to keep the price well under that of top-end models. Such design is followed by the next Bissell air320, which is truly the company’s refresh from the old Bissell air400.

It is a grade-A box-ticker thanks to the high-end Smart Sensor inside, which is relatively rare in the last decade. Today, the acquisition of Smart Sensor in low-end devices less than $200 (sometimes less than $100) is quite popular. We can look for air purifiers from a lot of Chinese players with such high-end feature, making a Smart air purifier feel “common”.

But still, the Bissell air220 has all the features you might ask for when trying to see whether an air purifier’s worth its asking price, on paper at least. The starting price is $229 on Bissell website, reduced to only $194 if you’re lucky to get a deal in Breathe Quality.

However, this air purifier is one a little too expensive given the competition at the price. You can get a similarly impressive air purifier with better specs for much lower price, like the Winix 5500-2 or Levoit LV-H133. There’s a reason why not every retailer under the sun is grabbing for this air purifier, though you can still find Bissell air220 win over lots of air purifiers like AeraMax Baby DB55, Medify MA-18 and Oreck Air Response Large.

If you have a soft spot for the brand, though, this is a perfectly solid air purifier. It just lacks the aggressive pricing edge that has made me recommend an air purifier for such competitive market segment.

Bissell air220 2609A Design and Size

The Bissell air220 is a premium black air purifier and it feels dense and hard, two properties that make a device feel like it is made of solid metal rather than a cheap air purifier with a metallic finish. This is also the design concept for the next Bissell air320.

It’s not all metal though, as there are plastic inserts everywhere, just like any air purifiers less than $600. But like I’ve said earlier, the combination of its color tone, the light indicator, and its rough black bezel tell you this is a premium air purifier, something you won’t notice any difference with high-end models when simply using Bissell air220.

For the dimension, Bissell air220 is big with the height of 24 inches, together with the width of 14.5 inches. It is solid, too, thanks to four mid-century modern accent legs. The rectangular shape of Bissell air220 and these legs provide stability for the air purifier, and elevate platform.

Bissell air220 runs the simple bottom-to-top air flow system concept, and it uses the perforated holes for both air intake and air outlet. The front air grill is big, allowing for the air purifier to be placed against the wall. There is a logo below the air intake, and you can check the model name from the side. Also, the side is where you can find the air sensor of this product.

Bissell air220 uses only one soft-touch dial for the control panel, which is above the digital and light indicators.

Well, the Bissell air220 is heavy with its size, being 18.7 lbs. You really need the convenient handle to help you move the air purifier. Thankfully, the 6-ft power cord stores discreetly behind the air purifier, as you can wrap the cord length.

Bissell produces only the air purifiers with 100% ozone-free, using their own in-house air filter. In this Bissell air220 2609A, there is a 3-stage air cleaning system.

1. Pre-filter – A pre-filter is used to capture the large objects of pollutants, like pet hair, fur and large dust.
2. HEPA filter – With the High Efficiency filter, the Bissell air220 can trap 99.7% of 0.3 microns particles or larger.
3. Activated Carbon Filter – This Activated Carbon filter captures common household odors and pet odors.

The Bissell air220 runs a simple air filtration system with a HEPA filter at the core, which performs well in our test in a space of 200 square feet. After 1 hour of continuous run, the Bissell air220 seems to be a lot better than the TruSens Z-2000, Alen T500 and Envion Ionic Pro Platinum, with high efficiency of trapping 99.5% of any particles down to 0.3 microns. However, the result is far below the Oreck Air Response Large, Vornado AC550 and Vornado PCO300.

But don’t worry, it costs way much less for the Bissell air220’s annual filter replacement than these aforementioned air purifiers. You only need to pay $22 for the HEPA filter, and it can last for 6 month.

Bissell air220 2609A Room Coverage

The Bissell air220 is recommend for a room of 220 square feet by the manufacturer, which is written right in its name. Almost all good air purifiers above $150 mark make for decent room coverage today.

The ACH of Bissell air220 is 1X to 3X. If the air purifier is running in the standard room size of 220 square feet, it can clean the room every 20 minutes. But if you put the Bissell air220 in a room of 800 square feet, it will clean only one time per hour.

The CADR of Bissell air220 is 178 Dust/ 172 Smoke/ 160 Pollen (cfm). This air purifier has enough fan stamina to run in the required room coverage, but if you really plan to use it in 800-sq-ft room, think again.

Despite having a lot better fan power than the Bissell MyAir, the Bissell air220 performs silently within 4 different fan speeds. On lowest fan speed, the noise level is just 34 decibels (db), and our today reviewed Bissell air220 is more silent than even the library mode.

The highest noise level of this Bissell air220 is only 51 decibels, and you can hear sound from this operation, but it is far from being annoying. For an air purifier with such big size of fan, the noise level of Bissell air220 is truly impressive.

Our verdict

The Bissell air220 is a low-range air purifier that flirts with the high-end in a few areas, including its high-quality classic build. It doesn’t have a particularly striking performance of True HEPA filter, which is now a common term thanks to the Coway AP-1512HH and Honeywell HPA300, but in terms of pure quality and whisper-quiet operation it’s close to the top dogs.

Where it gets difficult is when you start looking at the price against some of the specs. And though you can breathe easy with the annual filter cost replacement, the high power consumption is still the reason to avoid the device.
