NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

The NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 is one of the more practical entries I’ve seen in the large-room class, bringing (practically) permanent filter into high-range segment. It starts a new line among Nuwave, with the technology very similar to Airdog, but with better performance. So, let’s check our newest NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 review.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 ranks C+ in our air purifier ranking list. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 review
PROS

  • High-quality HEPA filter
  • Very good annual cost
  • Good performance, high fan power
CONS

  • No feature, even basic features

Nuwave is an American home appliance brand founded in 1993 as IBC-Hearthware, Inc. The company starts with kitchen appliances, but quickly expands to the air purifier field. The OxyPure Zero is the line that uses only the Bio-Guard filter, which is advertised as not needing replacement. Okay, let’s read our first Nuwave OxyPure Zero E500 review.

Other NuWave’s Air Purifier Reviews:

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 Price

Welcome to the dawn of the washable-filter air purifier. While past purifiers have had reusable pre-filters, the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 has it everywhere. You don’t need to look for a replacement filter aisle for the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500, it does away with disposable cartridges entirely, and it will ask you to simply rinse it off instead.

It is the beginning of a new technology for NuWave, and it continues with the NuWave OxyPure Zero E1000 and NuWave OxyPure Zero E2000. NuWave also uses this technology for the pre-filter in its high-end models, like the NuWave OxyPure 47001 or NuWave Forever 47265.

For the price, the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 isn’t cheap. It starts at $419 and if you want the version with casters for easy mobility, you should look for the E1000 instead. Luckily, we found a good deal for you, shipped directly by Amazon, and you can get your NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 for only $349. We believe that you should buy from Breathe Quality because the names of NuWave air purifiers are super confusing, and you won’t know whether you’re getting the right air purifier or not.

At its current price point, the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 asks too much for its forever filter. You may argue that when buying an air purifier at this price point, the annual filter cost racks up quickly, and soon you need to pay for a second air purifier at the same price. But how about the performance? You’re compromising by not choosing the AeraMax SE, Blue Signature Large, Coway Airmega 450 or Levoit EverestAir instead.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 Design and Size

The NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 comes across as clean and functional, even more so than some of the boxier units in Nuwave’s older OxyPure HEPA line, like the NuWave OxyPure 47001. There will be differences between the base model 47351 and later units like the NuWave OxyPure Zero E1000, most notably the bigger size and the inclusion of casters.

The new design pops the touch panel up from the top, but offers smooth lines and a satisfying contrast between matte plastic and glossy glass. The control panel is finished with a green texture, just like the housing, offering a contrast against the air-quality light. Overall the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 is a big console air purifier, with its dimensions 9.5″ (D) x 11.88″ (W) x 18.13″ (H).

You will have two handles to move the unit around, but remember that the console NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 is big at 17.5 lbs. That’s why we need the NuWave OxyPure Zero E2000 and E1000, which is slightly more expensive than our today Zero E500.

Other than that, it’s a simple bottom-to-top airflow system concept from the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500. It isn’t really an air purifier that you will be impressed immediately.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 Filters

The NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 has a dual 3-stage air filtration as below.

  1. Pre-filter – The stainless steel pre-filter can capture larger contaminates like dust, hair and lint.
  2. Hi-tech Bio-Guard filter – The exclusive Bio-Guard filter that is rated to capture pollutants as small as 0.01 microns.
  3. Bio-Guard 360 filter – Deals with pollutants as small as 0.1 microns.

The technology behind the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 is its Bio-Guard filters. By combining electrostatic charges between the plates, the Bio-Guard can (theoretically) capture even ultra-fine particles. However, the performance isn’t that good, and the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 needs two Bio-Guard filters combined with a large cylindrical Bio-Guard 360 to guarantee efficiency.

However, the performance of the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 is really bizarre, as it is very similar to the Airdog X5 that we have reviewed a long time ago. The NuWave OxyPure Zero E1000 seems to do a better job, at just $100 higher.

Blue Signature SP4i leads at 99.980% with no degradation applied. OxyPure Zero E1000 follows at 96.505% after a 0.67 degradation factor. Airdog X5 and OxyPure Zero E500 trail closely at 76.572% and 76.117% — despite the X5’s higher rated CADR (200 vs 114 cfm), its steeper 0.387 ionizer degradation nearly equalizes their effective performance.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 review

Luckily, the main reason we buy a NuWave OxyPure Zero air purifier is because it doesn’t need air filter replacement. In case you want a spare filter replacement, you can buy one below. Otherwise, there is no need to get this filter.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 Room Coverage

It seems NuWave wants to advertise the filtration technology behind the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500, sometimes the company forgot to tell its customers the suggested room size. If you read from the manufacturer’s website, the suggested room size is about 900 square feet, so it is just slightly larger than the budget NuWave OxyPure 47501.

The ACH of the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 is 5X. If you’re going to use the air purifier in the manufacturer’s suggested room size, the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 only exchanges 1 time per hour.

The CADR of the OxyPure Zero E500 is 102 Dust/ 114 Smoke/ 170 Pollen (cfm). It’s too low for a $400 air purifier, so don’t be surprised to see the E500’s low performance.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 Sound

There is one disadvantage of an ionizer like the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 – its high noise level. Even for an air purifier with such low fan power, the noise can reach 62 decibels (dB) at its highest speed, making the air purifier one of the noisiest on the market.

If you use the Sleep mode of the NuWave OxyPure E500, the noise level is acceptable at 32 decibels. Not the best, but it is decent.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 Power Consumption

As one of the most criteria when deciding to buy an air purifier, one of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?”. In fact, an air purifier needs to run for a long time (usually more than 8 hours) to be efficient.

The NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 was once listed in Energy Star listing, with its power consumption of only 48 watts. It is okay for its performance.

If you’re going to run the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 at least 8 hours per day, the annual cost will be $21.

NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 Additional Features

NuWave always chooses to make smart air purifiers, and the company has a dedicated smart app to work with its high-end line. Some of these features are available and useful right away. Some require nothing more than pairing with the free NuWave Connect app.

Whenever the NuWave OxyPure Zero E500’s sensors detect a spike in particulates or odor, Auto mode is genuinely useful. The dual-sensor Auto mode is a highlight of the whole lineup. Ultimate Clean mode can jump straight to the highest fan speed the moment poor air quality is detected.

Is it worth pairing the app at all? Largely yes – I’d use it for the filter-life tracking, not just the air quality graphs. The Wi-Fi pairing process is not a total dud. It offers straightforward setup if you just want basic monitoring, but if you’re looking for anything more advanced, the feature set is fairly limited.

Our verdict

The NuWave OxyPure Zero E500 is mostly saved by its well-implemented smart features, as well as a good and economical annual cost. However, we think you should at least look for the NuWave OxyPure Zero E1000, or even up the game with the NuWave OxyPure Zero E2000 for a better air purifier.
