Can Dayton’s budget air purifier really the budget anymore? Let’s take a look at the Dayton 2HPE1, which directly competes in $150 segment. And for what you pay, you may expect more from your air purifier. So, with our Dayton 2HPE1 Review, I will again, not recommend using a Dayton air purifier.
Updated: Want to know the best Dayton air purifier? Let’s check the Dayton 2HPB2 and Dayton 2HPB1. They are expensive, though.

Dayton is a very old brands of not only air purifiers, but also other commercial and industrial motors. The Dayton 2HPE1 is one of their most affordable air purifier products, but is it enough to compete with the more and more improved air purifiers out there? Let’s find out in our Dayton 2HPE1 Review.

Dayton 2HPE1 Price
Will it be supported for long? Maybe not… and clearly the actual stock of the Dayton air purifiers is lower today. Is the Dayton 2HPE1 a decent alternative to other air purifiers like Levoit LV-PUR131, Winix 5500-2 or Honeywell HPA200? The answer is definitely no.
It’s no secret that Dayton is on the rocks, no one talks about this brand, and it is only in search because it shares the same name with the sixth-largest city in Ohio.
And this Dayton 2HPE1, with the official price of $152, it must face a lot of other competitors. Closest to this device is the upgrade of the first Dayton 2HPD4 – Dayton HPB8 and Dayton HPB9. I’m not confident to guarantee that you can find a Dayton 2HPE1 from our deal, but you can try.
Along with the top dogs from Levoit and Winix, you wouldn’t want to have a Dayton 2HPE1 over the RENPHO RP-AP001, Hathaspace, Rowenta PU4020 or Coway AP-1216L. So, I don’t think you should choose the Dayton 2HPE1.

Very compact. 5-stage air filtration system.

Dayton 2HPE1 Design and Size
Small, functional and with sharp edges the 2HPE1 model is classic tower Dayton air purifier design. Sized at 14.2 inches in height and 6.2 inches in width, it gives me a feeling just like the Dayton 2KXN9, which I was lucky to have a few days to test it.
Dayton 2HPE1 still uses the familiar gray color, and this air purifier runs a old-styled front-to-back air flow system concept. It isn’t quite suitable for any tower air purifiers at the moment, and I consider it a minus for the Dayton 2HPE1.
Nothing special to look at the design of this air purifier, and you get one simple top control panel. Also, you will find a convenient handle here, and it is easy to lift the Dayton 2HPE1 with the weight of only 6.6 lbs.

Dayton 2HPE1 Filters
You will get the most powerful air filtration system from this Dayton family, which matches even the flagship Dayton 2HPB2. Yes, let’s take a look at the 5-stage air filtration system of Dayton 2HPE1.
- Pre-filter – A layer of pre-filter to remove large particles.
- Activated Carbon filter – It attaches with a TiO2 photocatalyst filter to enhance the power of UV light. This filter can trap odors and destroy chemicals, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
- True HEPA filter – Traps 99.97% of any particles as small as 0.3 microns, like pollen, mold spores, pet dander, dust or dust mites.
- UV light filter – Kills all biological pollutants like viruses, bacteria, mold spores and germs.
- Ionizer – Anions charge the pollutants back to the mechanical air filter.
It is important to know that the Dayton 2HPE1 isn’t certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), unlike the mechanical-only Dayton 2HPC3 and Dayton 2HPD4. It can’t turn off the ionizer setting, so you shouldn’t use this air purifier, or you can suffer from asthma or other breathing issues.
The performance of Dayton 2HPE1 isn’t bad, but only in a very small space of 100 square feet. It can trap 99.5% of all particles down to 0.3 microns, within 1 hour. However, such performance is just only the same as the Blue Pure 411 or Levoit Vista 200, which costs as half as the Dayton 2HPE1.
If you want an air purifier with a good large-room performance, I recommend to look for the Winix 5300-2, Winix 5500-2 or Honeywell HPA200.
Also, the filter replacement of the Dayton 2HPE1 isn’t cheap. The HEPA filter model 2KXN8 costs you $21, and it is quite expensive for a normal True HEPA filter. This filter can only last for 6 months, so the annual filter cost of this air purifier is even higher.
Still, I will give you the deal for the filter replacement, which is helpful for any current Dayton owners.

Dayton 2HPE1 Room Coverage
Dayton 2HPE1 is suggested for a smaller room coverage than even the cheaper Dayton 2HPD4, from 193 to 270 square feet, by the manufacturer. However, I don’t think its fan power can handle such large space.
The ACH of Dayton 2HPE1 is 1X to 3X.
The CADR of Dayton 2HPE1 is just 57 cfm in general. It is the HEPA air purifier with lowest fan power in Dayton family.

Dayton 2HPE1 Sound
However, with such low fan power, it seems all Dayton air purifiers can handle the whisper-quiet operation very well. So, the Dayton 2HPE1 can go as low as 26 decibels (db), which is even quieter than the whisper.
However, since the air purifier has both ionizer and UV light filter, I recommend not to run it in bedrooms.

Dayton 2HPE1 Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” because we need to run an air purifier for a constant long time, and power consumption is really a thing to consider.
Dayton 2HPE1 has a very low power consumption, which is impressive at only 35 watts. It is reasonable for an air purifier with such low fan power, though it isn’t rated as Energy Star.
If you run the Dayton 2HPE1 for at least 8 hours per day, it would cost you only $12.5 each year.

Dayton 2HPE1 Additional Features
Dayton may be very proud of their auto shutoff Timer feature. You can find this feature in any models of Dayton, with the only exception of the cheapest Dayton 2KXN9.
But it is quite disappointing, because for $150 you can get a lot of air purifiers with Smart Sensor, like the Levoit LV-PUR131, Winix 5500-2, Airthereal APH260 or Oreck Air Response Small.

Dayton 2HPE1 Customer Service
The Dayton products are now distributed by the W. W. Grainger Inc only, so actually, you won’t get proper support if you buy from other vendors. You should contact Grainger at 800-472-4643, or live chat with them online to ask more questions.
So far, Grainger offers 1-year warranty for all products sold by them. If you get a Dayton air purifier from other source (for example our deal), you won’t be covered with this warranty.

Very compact. 5-stage air filtration system.
Our verdict
It is a necessary review to tell you to stay away from the Dayton 2HPE1. It is out of the competition for too long, and there is no reason to choose it over the top dogs of low-range segment.
