Our today Bionaire BAP535UV-U is a proof that budget air purifiers need not be lacking in style or features. This flagship model of Bionaire, the upgraded version of the successful Bionaire BAP536UV-U is once the symbol of the low-cost lineup with feature-heavy slider. In 2021, this air purifier is not good enough for the performance, but the Bionaire BAP535UV-U still has the core features to get a ticket in a today’s budget-conscious marketplace. Okay, it’s time for our Bionaire BAP535UV-U Review.
In Breathe Quality, we have reviewed all air purifiers under these sections. Also, we guarantee that:
- We do give honest reviews (both pros and cons) so anyone will guarantee to have the wisest choices.
- We do not (and never) exaggerate one product just to let you click the links and buy that product blindly.
- Better performance with UV-C light filter
- Sleek tower design
- More additional features
- Good customer service
- No True HEPA filter
- Quite noisy
As a subsidiary of The Holmes Group, Bionaire is now a brand mainly for Canada. Their products mostly resemble the Holmes air purifiers, but they still have two good tower air purifiers of their own. The Bionaire BAP535UV-U comes with a tempting design with a sophisticated exterior of the predecessor, and adds some necessary features to win the price tag. But given that there are many new True HEPA air purifiers in this price range, we need the Bionaire BAP535UV-U Review to see if it’s worth to fight back with just only the HEPA-type filter.
Other Bionaire’s Air Purifier Reviews:
Bionaire BAP535UV-U Price
After the release of the Bionaire BAP536UV-U, Bionaire has a solid position in the air purifier market, and finally has gone out of the shadow of the brand Holmes. It has nothing like the old classic style of Holmes appearance, and the Bionaire BAP535UV-U even digs with features that is unavailable in the parent brand, too.
Although the build quality does feel a little fragile in places, the end result is a device with greater performance and capable of assuming all the airs and graces of its Holmes counterparts at a fraction of the cost. Our today unit, the Bionaire BAP535UV-U price is $139, $40 higher than the previous model. You pay to get the missing Nightlight function from Bionaire BAP600-U, and gain the unique oscillation function.
However, $139 pushes the Bionaire BAP535UV-U to face against the top air purifiers, most notably the GermGuardian AC5350B and Winix 5300-2. Together with the AeraMax 200 and Honeywell HPA030B, they are all the True HEPA air purifiers of big and trusted air purifier brands.
So to say, the Bionaire BAP535UV-U is quite… expensive for its only HEPA-type air filter. To know why the HEPA-type is inferior, you should head to other air purifier reviews.

Bionaire BAP535UV-U Design and Size
From the outside, the Bionaire BAP535UV-U is identical to the previous Bionaire BAP536UV-U. It is the same height of 29 inches, same diagonal top control panel and even the same back-to-front air flow system concept. We can see the large air outlet grill, which is made to enable the oscillation function. The back of this air purifier is sealed with a plate, and in my opinion, tower air purifier is the easiest device to install and uninstall air filters.
There are differences, of course, so you can tell the Bionaire BAP535UV-U apart from the previous model. It has silver bezel around the top control panel, and combines with the premium black body, our Bionaire BAP535UV-U looks really, really good. We will have more functional buttons, because of new features like Nightlight or oscillation function.
Other than the clear different, the Bionaire BAP535UV-U remains the same weight of 14 lbs, and the same convenient handle from the back.

Bionaire BAP535UV-U Filters
To decide the performance of one air purifier, you will need to know about the quantity and quality of its air filters, as well as the air filter types are used. The Bionaire BAP535UV-U uses the same 3-stage air cleaning system from the predecessor.
- HEPA-type filter – It is not a True HEPA filter, and the quality is much inferior. But the air filter from Bionaire BAP535UV-U is said to clean 99% of any particles down to 2 microns in size.
- Ionizer – Emits negative ions bind with airborne smoke, dust and pollen to form larger particles that are more easily captured, which complies the standard safety of CARB completely.
- UV-C Light – With an UV-C light bulb, Bionaire BAP535UV-U can reduce germs, viruses, bacteria, mold and fungi.
If we compare the internals of this air purifier with the older Bionaire air purifiers, there’s not much difference. The HEPA-type air filter from Holmes is used again and again, through generations of both Holmes and Bionaire air purifiers. At least, Bionaire BAP535UV-U features the new UV-C light filter, coming from the previous Bionaire BAP536UV-U. However, because of the same internals, we can easily conclude that the performance of this air purifier is just the same as the BAP536UV-U. As you can see from the below chart, the result of the test for our today Bionaire BAP535UV-U in a room of 150 square feet and under 1 hour, was still 93% for trapping any particles down to 0.3 microns.
You can use the air filter HAPF30AT HEPA-type filter in this Bionaire BAP535UV-U, which costs you $17 for 6 months of use. I believe that the True HEPA HAPF300APD is also suitable for this air purifier, but it will cost you $44 for a pack of two air filters. However, everything has its own price, and the True HEPA filter is necessary for anyone who need a real deal for their allergies or asthma.

Bionaire BAP535UV-U Room Coverage
There is not much to talk about the fan power, because the Bionaire BAP535UV-U has the same fan, as well as the same room coverage of 236 square feet.
The ACH of Bionaire BAP535UV-U is 4X. Another air purifier to clean your room every 15 minutes.
The CADR of Bionaire BAP535UV-U is still 153 Dust/ 152 Smoke/ 174 Pollen (cfm).

Bionaire BAP535UV-U Sound
Again, there is one downside for the air purifier with so much fan power, especially the old classic air purifier. One of the top disadvantages is the noise level. This Bionaire BAP535UV-U is really, really noisy when running at the highest setting, and the noise level can reach 60 decibels (db). If you can’t imagine how noisy it is, you can think of the noise level of public restaurant or office, which is something you can’t enjoy when sleeping with.
Moreover, like many Holmes and Bionaire devices, the Bionaire BAP535UV-U will have a crackling noise for the ionizer. This problem is inevitable even on lowest speed, and I suggest you to turn off the ionizer function when you don’t really need it.

Bionaire BAP535UV-U Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review how much energy this air purifier will consume.
Luckily, the Bionaire BAP535UV-U doesn’t consume too much energy, and for an air purifier with the highest fan power, it is truly a selling point. Just like the previous model, the Bionaire BAP535UV-U has the power consumption of only 60 watts.
For running the Bionaire BAP535UV-U 8 hours per day, you need to pay for $22 each year.

Bionaire BAP535UV-U Additional Features
The main reason you upgrade to this air purifier from the Bionaire BAP536UV-U is because of its rich additional features. First, you will have the precious oscillation function, to move the wind back and forth at any fan speed. This feature is available in the Honeywell HFD-120-Q and later, the flagship Honeywell AirGenius 6, too. For an only $139 air purifier, this feature is truly worth to be mentioned.
Like the unique egg air purifier – Bionaire BAP600-U, our Bionaire BAP535UV-U will feature the Night Mode, to make this device a perfect nightlight for the bedroom.
Finally, we will have a basic timer and a LED indicator for filter cleaning on this Bionaire BAP535UV-U. Only one pity, there is still no air sensor like in the old Bionaire BAP1700-U. Maybe the bad quality of the old air sensor makes this company decide to remove it completely, and I think it is a good decision.
Bionaire BAP535UV-U Customer Service
The Bionaire is one major subsidiary under the name of The Holmes Group, but the customer service is not as good as the main brand. Now, the Bionaire is owned by Sunbeam Products Inc, which was itself acquired by Jarden Corporation.
So, for most parts, the way to contact customer service of Bionaire is similar to Holmes, either by filling in the information at their Contact page, or calling them via phone at 800-253-2764.
They have good delivery option, with standard shipping rate to be from $6 to $40, depending on the order amount. At the time of writing, they also provide a Free Shipping for any orders over $50. There is a return policy for the Bionaire air purifiers, just like Holmes air purifiers, as you can return your item within 30 days of receipt for an exchange or refund of the purchase price, for any reason.
Most importantly, all Bionaire air purifiers are warranted with 5-year warranty, which is the best offer for a low-range lineup.
Here we are the flagship of Bionaire air purifier brand, one thing that keeps them apart from the shadow of the parent company – Holmes. Though there are many problems with the tower air purifier, thanks to the additional purchase of new True HEPA filter, this device can rival those from big brands. The features of Bionaire BAP535UV-U is also good and simple too use, and we can’t deny the fact that more features are always better.
A potential air purifier, but it still depends on the Holmes True HEPA filter.
