The Alen BreatheSmart 25i is eye-catchingly affordable for an Alen product, but that comes at a cost: a CADR of 107 cfm that can barely keep up with medium-sized rooms, a downgraded warranty that only stays valid if you keep buying filters on subscription, and a price-per-performance ratio that stronger rivals undercut with ease. Get ready with our latest Alen BreatheSmart 25i review.

Founded in 2004, Alen is an Austin-based brand built around one core promise: whisper-quiet HEPA filtration. The BreatheSmart family – spanning the 25i, 35i, 45i, and 75i – carries the same True HEPA H13 filtration, airID smart sensor, and QuietMark-certified fans across the range.

Alen BreatheSmart 25i Price
The Alen BreatheSmart 25i is available now and its price is $179. For an Alen, that’s cheap – but it’s expensive for what the spec sheet actually delivers against the competition.
And you will have to think carefully about where you buy it, because Alen’s Forever Guarantee warranty only stays active if you purchase genuine Alen replacement filters on an ongoing subscription. If you stop, the coverage lapses. Not to mention that it is only 3-year warranty at the moment, though for an air purifier like the Alen BreatheSmart 25i, it should be a strength.
Shop around and you’ll find the same CADR territory covered by the Levoit Core 400S, Winix T810 and Blue Pure 311i Max. The Alen BreatheSmart 25i has the Wi-Fi capability, but it still needs to work hard to justify the gap, and it doesn’t always manage it.

Alen BreatheSmart 25i Design and Size
From one angle, the Alen BreatheSmart 25i is an air purifier for the buyer who can’t afford the Alen BreatheSmart 45i or Alen BreatheSmart 75i but still wants the Alen name. You could imagine Alen’s team getting together, frustrated by the amount of money the brand’s flagship models demand, and deciding to see how low they could go.
And this happened, an air purifier that is even more affordable than the old price of the Alen T500. It looks crazily similar to the Alen flagships, while keeping small, compact form at only 16.8 inches in height and 11 inches in width. It is the type of air purifier that sits tidily on a desk or floor.
Alen has never been shy about recycling its design language. The BreatheSmart family shares the same tall rectangular cabinet, front-panel filter access, and top-mounted controls across every model – and has done so for years. Perhaps Alen learns from another Austin-based air purifier brand – Austin Air in delivering air purifier design.
So to say, it’s the same front-to-top airflow system concept for the Alen BreatheSmart 25i, and the same top control panel design. There is only one minor difference from the newer Alen BreatheSmart 25i and Alen BreatheSmart 35i: they stand on two narrow raised legs – a noticeably more lightweight arrangement that suits its portable brief but does make the unit feel less planted than the larger models. Together with the weight of only 8 lbs, the Alen BreatheSmart 25i isn’t a solid air purifier. You should keep it away from your pets.

Alen BreatheSmart 25i Filters
As the decisive criteria for the performance of one air purifier, by default we look at the quantity and the quality of its air filters, and what the air filter types are using. The Alen BreatheSmart 25i cuts cost by only using 1 filter for its air filtration system.
- H13 True HEPA filter – The Alen BreatheSmart 25i captures 99.9% of particles as small as 0.1 microns, including bacteria, aerosolized viruses, allergens, dust, pollen, and mold spores. Choose from four specialized configurations:
- Essential – The standard True HEPA filter for everyday allergens, dust, and mold.
- Advanced – Adds an Activated Carbon filter for households sensitive to VOCs, cooking odors, and chemicals.
- Ultimate – Uses Alen’s patented Molecular Conversion Powder instead of standard carbon to destroy heavy pet odors at a molecular level, rather than simply absorbing them.
Starting with the Alen BreatheSmart 25i, it seems Alen has adopted a new naming convention for its air filters. The Advanced filter is essentially the old Fresh filter, while the Ultimate filter is simply the renamed Heavy Odor filter. The new names make it easier for Alen to distinguish between its three filter options, but for longtime Alen users, the change may be a bit confusing.
Forget the naming convention, back to the usual performance test for the Alen BreatheSmart 25i. It runs in the usual test of 200 square feet, for 1 hour, and the Alen BreatheSmart 25i captures only 97.36% of all particles down to 0.3 microns. It isn’t a good result for an air purifier, you should look for the Winix 5530 or Winix AM90 for better performance.

Assumptions: smoke CADR used for all models; all seven models AHAM verified with True HEPA filtration; Winix 9800 smoke CADR of 323 cfm from Breathe Quality — same CADR as Winix C909; Winix 5530, AM90, C535 and C545 AHAM-certified smoke CADRs; Winix C535 and C545 share identical 232 cfm smoke CADR — the C545 adds Wi-Fi and app control; Winix AM90 (233 cfm) and C535/C545 (232 cfm) are effectively tied; Levoit Vital Pet Pro smoke CADR of 148 cfm directly from AHAM; Alen BreatheSmart 25i smoke CADR of 97 cfm from AHAM — rated for 151 sq ft at 4.8 ACH, making 200 sq ft 32% above its optimal room size; Alen 25i (3.638 ACH) falls below the AHAM-recommended 4.8× minimum for 200 sq ft; all five Winix models and Levoit Vital Pet Pro exceed the 4.8× minimum; 8 ft ceiling assumed; perfect room mixing assumed.

The Essential filter of the Alen BreatheSmart 25i starts at $44, which is decent for this price range because it can last 1 year without voiding your warranty.

Alen BreatheSmart 25i Room Coverage
The manufacturer recommends the Alen BreatheSmart 25i for rooms up to 400 square feet. However, as with most Alen air purifiers, it’s best to keep your expectations realistic when it comes to the advertised room coverage. You should use the Alen BreatheSmart 25i in room of 150 square feet for the best performance.
The ACH of the Alen BreatheSmart 25i is 5X. However, if you’re using this air purifier as suggested by Alen, the air purifier only exchanges air 2 times per hour.
The CADR of the Alen BreatheSmart 25i is 106 Dust/ 97 Smoke/ 105 Pollen (cfm). This is quite bad for the price range, and the Alen BreatheSmart 25i suffered from Breathe Quality’s usual test.

Alen BreatheSmart 25i Sound
Technology has advanced to the point where Alen no longer needs to sacrifice a True HEPA filter to achieve quiet operation. Instead, the company has chosen to build air purifiers with lower fan speeds, as seen with the Alen BreatheSmart 25i. It’ll run next to a sleeping child or under a desk without registering, of course – and at 20 dB on the lowest setting, the sound doesn’t intrude at any speed. The Alen BreatheSmart 25i is among the quietest HEPA units available at any price point, with QuietMark certification to back the claim.
Noise quality at max turbo is nothing disruptive either. While the fan is audible at 40 decibels, the Alen BreatheSmart 25i is very restrained for a turbo setting and the tone can charitably be described as a steady, soothing hum. Consistent and unobtrusive.

Alen BreatheSmart 25i Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” An air purifier is meant to run for a long time to be efficient, that’s why many air purifier brands consider the energy-saving standard, mostly in the rate of Energy Star, is one important selling point.
Using a compact low-wattage motor might make you hope for excellent efficiency in the Alen BreatheSmart 25i, and this is one of its genuine strengths. The Alen BreatheSmart 25i is an Energy Star air purifier, and its power consumption is only 15 watts. Its performance per watt is incredible.
If you’re going to use the Alen BreatheSmart 25i at least 8 hours per day, the annual energy cost is just $6.57.

Alen BreatheSmart 25i Additional Features
The Alen BreatheSmart 25i runs Alen’s airID sensor platform. This is a well-regarded optical detection system, and is more capable than the passive infrared sensors many budget air purifiers rely on for their Auto mode. Practically, it’s an optical AI sensor that can identify what kind of particles they are (dander vs. smoke vs. pollen vs. smog). It’s also the upgrades that the company puts in the version 2.0 of the Alen BreatheSmart 45i and Alen BreatheSmart 75i.
Then we have the Wi-Fi capability, from the Alen Air app. It records the history of air quality data, and sends custom alert to your smartphone. It is also one kind of remote control, which is pretty common for an air purifier app.
From the app and the manual control, the Alen BreatheSmart 25i has Child lock setting, a LED indicator for filter replacement. Finally, the air purifier has a light sensor, to dim the display when you turn off the ambient light.

Our verdict
The Alen BreatheSmart 25i has a significant weakness in filtration performance, but its excellent feature set and outstanding Energy Star-rated energy efficiency still make it a worthwhile recommendation.
