The Oreck ProShield Plus is a powerful air purifier based on Truman Cell filter, a necessary upgrade from the popular Oreck XL Professional. The design is also next step from the previous machine, which you will find out right in this Oreck ProShield Plus Review.
It seems the Oreck ProShield Plus has been discontinued, as we can’t find the product in Oreck website for a long time. We recommend you to look for the Oreck Air Response Large instead. If you like the concept of permanent air filter, the Honeywell AirGenius 6 is also a good option.
Updated: The Oreck ProShield Plus is superseded by the new Oreck DualMax.
In Breathe Quality, we have reviewed all air purifiers under these sections. Also, we guarantee that:
- We do give honest reviews (both pros and cons) so anyone will guarantee to have the wisest choices.

Founded in 1963, Oreck is a formidable force in the air purifier industry, especially with their signature Truman Cell air filter. The Oreck ProShield Plus is the well complicated for its smart design, as well as more advanced filtration method than the predecessors. Are you curious? Let’s complete the Oreck ProShield Plus Review now.
Other Oreck’s Air Purifier Reviews:
Oreck ProShield Plus Price
The previous Oreck XL Professional is a successful personal air purifier for years, and simply the American company can’t resist to release a better upgrade to follow that success. Oreck ProShield Plus is clearly hungry for market share and it’s going to fight for it.
The best part? Oreck will keep the same official price tag for this Oreck ProShield Plus, just like the previous model. It is only $299 as in Oreck website (sometimes will be $299), and you will get a much better deal in Breathe Quality, as usual.
There’s no two ways about it – this is a much better air purifier than the original, and it’s probably the better value for money. The question, is it good enough to replace the HEPA filter?
There are plenty of aggressors circling it, from the excellent personal air purifier IQAir Atem to the good-looking with strong cooling output Dyson Pure Cool Me, but the Oreck ProShield Plus has the advantage when it comes to price.

Oreck ProShield Plus Design and Size
Once again, Oreck has released an aggressive-looking air purifier, with large and parallel air grills and sharp edges, as if the Oreck ProShield Plus alone can attract any attention just by the look.
It can now lay completely on its side vertically, thanks to a removable base. The control panel is on front so you can simply stand the unit on its base, without any problem like the previous Oreck XL Professional or Oreck Tru Response.
The air purifier has a bump up in size, with 9 inches in height and 23 inches in width, and while it’s still compact in horizontal, this time you can’t place it vertically on table or desk anymore.
In addition, you can’t just slide the cover to lift it off, instead you need to press the cover release button, right below the top cover. This lock is more solid to hold the top cover, especially when you stand the Oreck ProShield Plus up.
Oreck ProShield Plus also changes the air flow direction to front-to-back system concept, mainly for the versatility in placing the air purifier. There is a cleaning brush that stores in the compartment under the cover, so you can use it to clean both front and back grills.

Oreck ProShield Plus has the weight of 15 lbs, which is a bit heavier than the predecessors.

Oreck ProShield Plus Filters
Just like the Oreck XL Professional, Oreck ProShield Plus will make use of an exclusive air filtration system from Oreck. Below is the 3-stage air cleaning system of Oreck ProShield Plus.
- Pre-filter – The pre-filter screen is able to capture the large object of pollutants like large dust, pet hair or lint. It is washable to be permanent. It is attached with a Activated Carbon filter, to remove common household odors and chemical fumes. It has rinsable screen to be permanent.
- Truman Cell filter – The patented filter of Oreck with Electrostatic Precipitator technology, which is one type of ionizer, to attract particles to the filter.
- Oxygenator – The necessary process to change the emitted ozone into oxygen. Oreck ProShield Plus combines the Helios Shield into the catalytic oxygenator, to reduce the odors from the air, too.
Oreck ProShield Plus will use a next-gen Truman Cell air filter, which works similarly like the previous version. By electrostatically charged the fine particles into the air filter, the Truman Cell technology works just like a magnet, and store the pollutants inside a collector. You can buy an optional carbon filter – the Odor Absorber Plus to reduce both odors and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as chemical fumes created by common household cleaners and synthetic materials from the air.
This air purifier is also certified by California Air Resources Board (CARB) to meet the safety ozone emission limit of releasing only 0.05 parts per million (ppm) ozone into the air, all thanks to the oxygenator. It is combined with the patented Helios Shield, which is another source of ionizer (called Air Revitalizer in previous model), so it can reduce the odors from the air filtration process. The Helios Shield feature can be switched on/off.
Again, I put the Oreck ProShield Plus in a room of 100 square feet, and let it run in 1 hour just like its siblings. It had an average score of 99.5% efficiency for trapping any particles down to 0.3 microns.
The top selling point to get a device with Truman Cell air filter is its permanent duration. As long as you give a regular and proper cleaning, the device can operate without filter replacement.

Oreck ProShield Plus Room Coverage
It seems we will have another personal air purifier with low fan power from Oreck again, as the room coverage of Oreck ProShield Plus is just only 80 square feet.
The ACH of Oreck ProShield Plus is 4X. This air purifier will exchange the air in your room every 15 minutes.
The CADR of Oreck ProShield Plus is 50 cfm in general, which is the lowest fan power in the whole Oreck family.

Oreck ProShield Plus Sound
With only 3 fan speeds, and such low CADR rating, the Oreck ProShield Plus operates quietly, even on the highest speed. Looking at the highest noise level to be only 47 decibels (db), we can conclude that Oreck ProShield Plus is a great air purifier for quiet places like bedroom or public office.
If you run the air purifier on lowest speed, you won’t notice any sound from the device. I’ve measured the lowest noise level to be only 20 decibels (db), which is exactly the noise level of rustling leaves.

Oreck ProShield Plus Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” because we need to run an air purifier for a constant long time, and power consumption is really a thing to consider.
The power consumption of Oreck ProShield Plus is only 55 watts, which is quite high for an air purifier with such low fan power. Indeed, you can get a Levoit LV-H132 with much lower power consumption.
If you run the Oreck ProShield Plus for 8 hours per day, you will need to pay $20 each year.

Oreck ProShield Plus Additional Features
Though being a direct upgrade from Oreck XL Professional, Oreck ProShield Plus still doesn’t add the Smart Sensor into its range of additional features.
However, you will get a remote control as a way to manage the settings of this air purifier from far away. It is convenient, but it is quite small so you shouldn’t get it lost.

The basic features like the Night Light function or a LED indicator for cleaning filter are staying in Oreck ProShield Plus. Moreover, you can turn the Oreck ProShield Plus into a “Dry Mode” by pressing and holding the power button, to let the air purifier check if the Truman Cell filter is truly dry or not.

Our verdict
Oreck ProShield Plus is more convenient to use than the previous Oreck XL Professional, but it doesn’t bring fragrance into your room instead.
It is discontinued, so you should look for the Honeywell AirGenius 5 if you like the concept of permanent filter.
