For years, Bionaire has sold only classic air purifiers without a Smart Sensor. The company still doesn’t seem to care much about the modern air purifier market, choosing instead to sell personal air purifiers priced under $100. It’s a good strategy to stay competitive in today’s market, where fewer brands are choosing to sell budget-friendly air purifiers.
And the iconic Bionaire BAP9417, also known as the Bionaire AER1 mini tower air purifier, is what we’re going to review today. It’s a compact tower air purifier that you can easily place on a nightstand or the floor, with a True HEPA filter as its main filtration system. It doesn’t offer any fancy features, but the Bionaire BAP9417 costs only $79.
For many people, that’s the limit of how much they can spend on an air purifier. For less than $100, you’ll get an air purifier from a brand with a U.S. heritage and perhaps the best customer service you can expect from a budget air purifier. You can’t find such support from other brands, even the GermGuardian AC3000 and Honeywell HPA125 cost more than our today Bionaire BAP9417.

Bionaire BAP9417 AER1 Design and Size
We can all agree that Bionaire will never make an air purifier with a bland design or one that mimics the popular Levoit Core 300. The brand has its own design philosophy, and although newer models like the Bionaire BAP9260 and BAP9921 have designs that are quite similar to those of modern air purifiers, today’s Bionaire BAP9417 keeps the classic air purifier design alive.
The Bionaire BAP9417 has perforated holes for its air inlets, a design feature that Bionaire introduced with the Bionaire BAP1412-U. We don’t see this design in modern air purifiers anymore because it tends to accumulate dust, making the inlets very difficult to clean. There is a window in front of the air purifier, mostly to advertise it as an AER1 mini tower air purifier, rather than doing anything.
In terms of size, the Bionaire BAP9417 is compact. It measures only 15.2 inches tall and 7.32 inches wide, so you can easily place it on the floor or a nightstand. All controls are located on the top control panel, and the Bionaire BAP9417 uses a knob to adjust the fan speed, which is very convenient.
The Bionaire BAP9417 AER1 is a mini tower design, so we have the classic back-to-front airflow system concept. It’s a classic air purifier design from the past, and we don’t see many new models using this design anymore.

Bionaire BAP9417 AER1 Filters
To decide the performance of one air purifier, you will need to know about the quantity and quality of its air filters, as well as the air filter types are used. The Bionaire BAP9417 features the new 3-stage air cleaning system as below.

In our Breathe Quality test, the Bionaire BAP9417 easily captures 99.61% of all particles as small as 0.3 microns, after 1 hour. It isn’t as good as the Levoit Core 300, but it is cheaper, by the way.

We still use the Bionaire AER1 filter for the Bionaire AER1 mini tower, model BAP9417. This is also the classic filter that we used in the Bionaire BAP1412-U or many Holmes models like the Holmes HAP424-NU or Holmes HAP9240-NWU. You only need to replace filter after 1 year, and this pack can easily last for 2 years.

Bionaire BAP9417 AER1 Room Coverage
The Bionaire BAP9417 is verified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) to work best in 115 square feet. This is a bit different from what’s advertised on its product page, which lists a larger room coverage of 164 square feet.
The ACH of the Bionaire BAP9417 AER1 is 5X. Any air purifier verified by the AHAM is doing its job 4.8 times per hour.
The CADR of the Bionaire BAP9417 AER1 is 74 Dust/ 75 Smoke/ 65 Pollen (cfm). It is slightly better than the Bionaire BAP9206, but you can get the latter at around $50.

Bionaire BAP9417 AER1 Sound
Bionaire air purifiers are never the best quiet ones in the market, and the classic AER1 mini tower isn’t an exception. Its highest noise level can reach 57 decibels (dB), which is a bit higher for a compact model like the Bionaire BAP9417.
Perhaps the problem is because of its crackling noise from the ionizer. Turning the air purifier to the lowest speed can dampen the noise, but you still hear that annoying noise.

Bionaire BAP9417 AER1 Power Consumption
One of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” In fact, air purifier must be used for a long time to be efficient. And power consumption is one important criteria to review how much energy this air purifier will consume.
The Bionaire BAP9417 has a rated power of 38 watts, which is decent for its performance. Running it on its lowest speed can reduce the power consumption.
The cost you need to pay for running the Bionaire BAP9417 annually, 8 hours per day is about $16.66.

Bionaire is never where you find air purifiers with smart features. The classic Bionaire BAP9417 is the finest example of this statement, and you have only one manual filter indicator that you need to dial and reset by yourself.

The Bionaire is one major subsidiary under the name of The Holmes Group, but the customer service is not as good as the main brand. Now, the Bionaire is owned by Sunbeam Products Inc, which was itself acquired by Jarden Corporation.
So, for most parts, the way to contact customer service of Bionaire is similar to Holmes, either by filling in the information at their Contact page, or calling them via phone at 800-253-2764.
They have good delivery option, with standard shipping rate to be from $6 to $40, depending on the order amount. At the time of writing, they also provide a Free Shipping for any orders over $50. There is a return policy for the Bionaire air purifiers, just like Holmes air purifiers, as you can return your item within 30 days of receipt for an exchange or refund of the purchase price, for any reason.
