The AirDoctor AD5500 launched as the successor to the old AirDoctor AD5000 that we didn’t have a chance to review, priced at $999 for the standard Classic unit. This is an expensive air purifier, as you only see such price on a full-metal air purifier like the Austin Air HealthMate Plus, Austin Air Bedroom Machine, or Airpura R700.
When an air purifier can’t advertise huge, high-quality in-house air filters like Austin Air and IQAir to justify a price of over one grand, the company must advertise smart features and technologies, as in the case of the Coway Airmega ProX, IQAir HealthPro Plus or LG PuriCare AS560DWR0.
The AirDoctor AD5500 obviously follows the second route, but there is one difference: its performance is high enough to handle extra-large rooms or even a whole house. It’s enough to beat almost all other air purifiers in this price range, thanks to its strong fan power.

AirDoctor AD5500 Design and Size
The AirDoctor AD5500 adopts the same general design language of the previous AD5000, something that you can guess from the AirDoctor AD3500, which is unmistakably the same as the AirDoctor AD3000. It’s a squared-off column with vents on both sides. And while it means this air purifier doesn’t exactly scream “new,” it’s good for old AirDoctor users to tell that this is from the brand.
So to speak, we can see the same AirDoctor design from its previous air purifiers in the new AirDoctor AD5500. It skips a numeric PM2.5 readout in favor of a color-coded AQM, displayed in the iconic halo ring below the “AirDoctor” logo. The top control panel has the same arrangement, which many people don’t like because of the number of buttons, but I like how straightforward AirDoctor makes it for users to control the AD5500.
I find this design makes the AirDoctor AD5500 a little chunky, relative to their actual specs. This air purifier is 28.75 inches in height, and 16 inches in width, very similar to the IQAir HealthPro Plus. The AirDoctor AD5500 is 33 lbs, but you have casters so it’s an easy task to move the air purifier around your house.
The AirDoctor AD5500 will have the common bottom-to-top airflow system concept, despite of using a new air intake. It is necessary because the AirDoctor AD5500 will have much better fan power than the previous AD5000. The dual air intake resembles the Coway Airmega ProX, improving the overall performance of the AirDoctor AD5500.

AirDoctor AD5500 Filters
The AirDoctor AD5500 still uses the signature AirDoctor 4-stage air cleaning process as below.
- Pre-filter – The pre-filter is designed to remove larger contaminates like dust and animal hair.
- UltraHEPA filter – The True HEPA filter of AirDoctor, which is designed to capture ultra-fine PM 2.5 particles from the air. It is “independently tested” to remove 100% of airborne particles at 0.003 microns in size, 100 times smaller than the HEPA standard.
- Activated Carbon filter – AirDoctor calls this filter a dual-action Carbon and VOC filter, as it can removes toxic ozone, gas, odors and VOCs from your indoor air. It can last for 6 months.
- Ionizer – It can remove the smells and odors, and helps the air fresh. Can be switched on/off.
Nothing has change since the previous AirDoctor AD4000, because the AirDoctor AD5500 will run the same setup to dealing with indoor airborne pollutants. However, the AirDoctor AD5500 must face a more difficult test for its performance, thanks to its higher price, at 700 square feet.
As you can see, the AirDoctor AD5500 is nearly the same as the top performers at this price point like the TruSens Z-6000 or Coway Airmega ProX.
