Holmes hasn’t been around for long compared with rivals like Honeywell, but this American air purifier maker has bold aspirations. It wants to shake up the budget sector by offering the kind of design and functionality that is the most essential.

The Holmes HAP9425B is all about the price, and it does it beautifully at a cheap price of $59. It doesn’t need to go lower, because finding a tower air purifier at this price point is impossible. Remember that even Guardian Technologies asks for $89 to buy their compact air purifier or tower air purifier, like the newer GermGuardian AC3000 or GermGuardian AC4880.

So, we have a cheap tower as it is. Certainly, the Holmes HAP9425B has its own problems to be that cheap, but it’s for the next parts of this review.

Holmes HAP9425B Design and Size

While some budget purifiers boast a basic plastic design which reinforces their status as economy air purifiers, the Holmes HAP9425B is a tower air purifier made of sleek ABS plastic. Even the materials needed to make the air purifier is far better from other cheap options.

The use of quality materials predictably gives the Holnes HAP9425B a premium feel as well as some welcome lightness in the hand; in terms of build quality, there’s more positive news – this is as solid feeling as you’re likely to get from a low-cost air purifier, with no movement or creakiness under pressure.

In terms of ergonomics, Holmes has scored another win here. The Holmes HAP9425B has a slim tower profile which allows the device to fit effortlessly into any corner, while the 27.9-inch height is sized perfectly to maximize room coverage.

The front of the Holmes HAP9425B has lots of visual features, but no digital buttons or inputs – instead, all interaction is handled via the manual dial control and the traditional ionizer switch. Where you’d expect to find a digital display there’s the rather fetching Visipure filter viewing window, while the air intake is housed in mesh grilles around the tower. Alongside this you’ll find the filter life indicator dial.

The Holmes HAP9425B runs a simple back-to-front airflow system concept, very similar to all other Guardian Technologies tower air purifiers. On the top surface, there’s the rotary speed dial with three settings and the ionizer on/off switch.

At 9 lbs, the Holmes HAP9425B is on the light team. But the lack of a proper handle makes it significantly difficult to position the air purifier around your room.

The Holmes HAP9425B is much decent when recommending its room coverage, and you should expect such tower air purifier for small and medium rooms. The manufacturer recommends to use the air purifier in a room of 200 square feet.

The noise character is relatively neutral – a consistent airflow sound without high-pitched whines or mechanical rattles. The simplicity of the design (no complex sensors or auto-adjustment motors) contributes to this straightforward acoustic profile. It seems Holmes has fixed the problem of ionizer’s noise on the Holmes HAP9425B – or at least our testing unit.

So the Holmes HAP9425B operates around 55 decibels (dB) on the highest setting. Not really good, but not bad, either.

Holmes HAP9425B Power Consumption
