Rather than being something as common as the True HEPA filter, Hamilton Beach tries a different path, to question the users for how much they need to maintain the air purifier annually. The Hamilton Beach air purifiers, however, use the Permanent HEPA filter and never need replacement. Though it is only the marketing tactic, it is truly unique.

The Hamilton Beach 04384 is more of a refined sequel to the normal Hamilton Beach 04386, and isn’t to be confused with the Hamilton Beach 04383 (the white version of 04386 model), which was only launched.

With more than 10000 reviews on Amazon, this air purifier could be your best budget pick. The Hamilton Beach 04384 comes with a great price as only $59, which was great, but no longer a good pick at the moment.

Hamilton Beach 04384 Design and Size

At first glance the total body of the Hamilton Beach 04384 looks extremely similar to the Hamilton Beach 04383, and only change the color option from the Hamilton Beach 04386.

This air purifier resembles the exact same size and shape, with 13.54 inches in height and 6 inches in width. The dimensions are stated different between the original website and Amazon. The weight of this air purifier is also 6 lbs, making it one of the most compact air purifiers in the world.

You can place this air purifier tabletop, vertically or horizontally. To place horizontally, remember to remove the base out of the device first, then add four adhesive feet as provided in the case to keep the air purifier balance. I think the versatility in placing the air purifier is really a great selling point of this product.

Hamilton Beach 04384, again, is running a front-to-back air flow system concept, which reverses from the common tower air purifiers. You can remove the front plate to easily clean or change the air filters. Look for an opening tab on top to put in/out the front plate.

The Hamilton Beach’s unique selling point is the Permanent HEPA filter, and they describe it to not break your budget. Well, let’s see how the Hamilton Beach 04384 performs in real life, especially when it has an upgraded 3-stage air cleaning system.

1. Pre-filter – A basic pre-filter to help capture pet hair and large particles.
2. Activated Carbon filter – With 2 zeolite filters, the Hamilton Beach 04384 mainly targets pet odors.
3. Permanent HEPA filter – This is actually a HEPA filter that can be cleaned or vacuumed for minimal upkeep. The air filter is said to remove 99% of any airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, mainly the dust mite debris, animal dander, mold and dust.

Again, I must emphasize that the real-world structure of HEPA filter doesn’t allow it to be permanent. The accumulation of pollutants on the surface will gradually destroy the HEPA filter, and you are advised to change it often. Most importantly, you can clean or vacuum the air filter, but do not wash it.

To be the pet air purifier, Hamilton Beach 04384 needs to capture the pet hair and pet odors. For the hair and fur problems, this air purifier uses a basic pre-filter which does a good job of trapping large objects of pollutants. Behind the pre-filter is the layer of two zeolite carbon filters.

Thanks to the Permanent HEPA filter, this American company claims that Hamilton Beach 04384 can remove 99% of any particles down to 0.3 microns. However, in our test, the Hamilton Beach 04384 failed miserably in performance test.

Well, if you like to change the air filter, you need to pay for $16, or you can completely believe in the name of “Permanent filter”. Hamilton Beach also sells the carbon filter, which costs for another $16, and it works with both the Hamilton Beach 04386 and Hamilton Beach 04384.

Hamilton Beach 04384 Room Coverage

The Hamilton Beach 04384 has the same price tag as the Hamilton Beach 04386, but with a better air cleaning system. As a trade-off, the fan power of this device seems to be weaker than its brother. So to say, Hamilton Beach 04384 can only cover a room of 140 square feet.

The ACH of Hamilton Beach 04384 is still 2X. The air changes per hour rating means this air purifier can exchange the air every 30 minutes in your room.

The CADR of Hamilton Beach 04384 is 35 cfm in general.

Hamilton Beach 04384 Sound

There is no difference between the Hamilton Beach 04384 and other models in the company later on. That being said, this air purifier is not really ultra quiet like the advertisement, especially when you use it at the highest setting. I measured a noise level of around 60 decibels (db), such noise level in public restaurants or offices.

If you want the air purifier to run quietly, you need to keep the fan power on lowest speed. I found some reviews telling that even on that setting, the Hamilton Beach 04384 is still loud, however, I didn’t hear anything from the air purifier unless sit very near it.

Hamilton Beach 04384 Power Consumption

An air purifier is designed to run for a long time to be more efficient, making the high-priority question in Breathe Quality is: “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?” To know the answer, we will need to check the power consumption of this air purifier.

For a device with same 3 fan power as its brother, the power consumption of Hamilton Beach 04384 remains the same, to be around 100 watts. Yes, the fan power could be lower, but the power consumption isn’t.

If you run the Hamilton Beach 04384 for about 8 hours each day, you need to pay $36 each year.

Between the Hamilton Beach 04384 and Hamilton Beach 04386, personally I will always use the former because I have pets in my home. In real-world use, both these air purifiers are quite enough for people who only need better air quality in small space, and don’t want much for maintaining the device to work. However, once you have serious problems with allergies and asthma, you should consider buying the real deal.
