Austin Air it Air Purifier: Trusted Review & Specs

Austin Air is making an even smaller and more affordable air purifier in the name of Austin Air it. It might not cover the largest rooms, but the Austin Air “it” offers ‘decent but not top-end’ performance: a capable HEPA filter, enough carbon wrap for everyday VOC adsorption, a trusted pedigree to rely on, and a lighter footprint than most full-size models. But is “it” worth the money? Time for a proper Austin Air it review.

Austin Air it ranks C in our air purifier ranking list. We give the biggest and most thorough database of air purifier reviews in the world.

Austin Air has been manufacturing medical-grade HEPA air purifiers in Buffalo, New York since 1990, making it one of the longest-established names in the American air purification industry. The brand is best known for its all-steel construction, long-life filters rated for up to five years, and a deliberate focus on filtration performance over smart features. With the Austin Air it review, let’s take a look at what this top-tier air purifier brand has been doing recently.

Other Austin Air’s Air Purifier Reviews:

Austin Air it Price

When Austin Air first released their Austin Air HealthMate HM400, it was the flagship and most recognized purifier the brand had ever made – the slow forward march of time has meant that the lineup has since expanded considerably, though. The Austin Air “it” brings a significantly different approach, including a compact tabletop form factor, to the range.

The Austin Air “it” was built around one goal: to deliver medical-grade HEPA purification in a far smaller package than before, and it achieves that well. For around $349 you can have a brand-new air purifier from Austin Air – it’s one of the most portable machines the brand has ever produced, and you can pick one up for significantly less than the full-size HealthMate HM400.

After the price adjustment from Austin Air, the only “junior” models that we can buy is only the Austin Air HealthMate Jr and Austin Air HealthMate Plus Jr, which are now at least $200 more expensive than what we wrote back in 2019. The Austin Air it should be the best affordable option we can buy for less than $300. Price inflation, it’s so bad, right?

Although some retailers describe this as a ‘personal’ air purifier, Austin Air positions it for single rooms up to 750 square feet – that is their manufacturer’s claim. For the price, the air purifier isn’t as powerful as many AHAM options out there: AeraMax SE, Levoit Core 600S, or Blue Signature. For that only, we don’t really recommend the Austin Air “it”, unless you’re a die-hard fan of solid steel, welded Austin Air air purifier.

Austin Air it Design and Size

The design is going to be familiar to anyone that’s followed Austin Air recently – unless you haven’t seen a machine from the brand since the early 1990s, you’ll recognize the cylindrical steel aesthetic, complete with perforated intake panels and a simple manual speed knob.

To be the most affordable air purifier in Austin Air lineup, the Austin Air “it” cuts the size of the “junior” system Austin Air HealthMate Jr by roughly half. It is enough to put the fan motor inside and keep the nearly identical fan power of the Austin Air it, but “it” needs a different HEPA filter in its 8.5-inch height.

Austin Air might have retained the same design language as their full-size machines, but the form factor is meaningfully rethought – notably the compact tabletop footprint, which is suitable for a bedroom air purifier. The Austin Air “it” is only 12 lbs, so it doesn’t need casters like the original Austin Air HealthMate.

The lighter weight is due not only to its smaller size but also to the thinner steel used in the Austin Air “it.” Austin Air used to specify 23-gauge steel for their standard units, but they no longer provide this information for the Austin Air “it.” Although the finish is quite similar to its larger brothers, we expect the material durability to be reduced.

Other than that, it is an Austin Air purifier, so we have the same 360° airflow system concept in the Austin Air “it”. While the manual-only control might feel like an archaic choice for a new air purifier, it makes a lot of sense in the Austin Air “it” – and for those who don’t particularly care for app dashboards and auto-adjustment algorithms, this more familiar approach will be a lot more desirable.

Austin Air it Filters

When evaluating an air purifier’s performance, we typically look at the number of filters and the types of filters it uses. The Austin Air it features an only 2-stage air cleaning system, less than its brothers:

  1. Pre-filter – It is a thin VOC Carbon wrap, which acts like a pre-filter with Activated Carbon filter, though it isn’t honeycombed Carbon filter from bigger air purifiers.
  2. True HEPA filter – The Medical-grade True HEPA filter of the Austin Air “it” can remove 99.97% of all particles larger than 0.3 microns, and even 95% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns.

Reducing the size leaves no room for a large, high-mass activated carbon filter. That’s why Austin Air uses a carbon wrap similar to those found in cheaper units inside the Austin Air “it.” It can help with gases, VOCs, and odors, but you shouldn’t expect strong performance. That’s quite sad for a >$300 air purifier like the Austin Air “it” to only have this type of carbon filter.

Still, the core of the Austin Air “it” is a medical-grade True HEPA filter. This level of filtration is more common in 2026 than it was eight years ago, but Austin Air’s quality is enough to ensure you’re getting clean air.

Austin Air “it” is tested in the same formula as its bigger version – the Austin Air HealthMate Jr, and despite of having same fan motor, the “it” has a slightly lower performance. If you move the test to a larger space from 300 square feet or more, the performance of the Austin Air “it” is just only 99.7%.

By using a smaller HM100 filter, the Austin Air “it” has a lower annual filter cost than the Junior. Both filters are from $130, and the HEPA filter is recommended to replace after 5 years. Yes, the Austin Air HEPA quality is still good.

Austin Air it Room Coverage

The Austin Air “it” is suggested for rooms up to 750 square feet by the manufacturer, the same as the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. However, we believe you should only use this air purifier for rooms around 200 square feet for the best results.

The ACH of Austin Air “it” is 2X. If you use the air purifier for the suggested room size of Austin Air, it will only exchange air one time per hour.

The CADR of Austin Air “it” is 200 cfm in general. It is the free flow CFM of the Austin Air “it”, actual CFM is usually lower.

Austin Air it Sound

The average noise level of the Austin Air “it” is around 50 decibels (dB), with the lowest fan speed at around 40 dB. It is similar to the library mode of other air purifiers, though I must confess to test and use a lot of quieter air purifier.

So the Austin Air “it” is probably the quietest Austin Air purifier, but it is nothing special.

Austin Air it Power Consumption

In Breathe Quality, one of our most FAQs is “Do air purifiers use a lot of energy?”. In fact, an air purifier needs to run for a long time (usually more than 8 hours) to be efficient, and therefore, power consumption is an important criteria to consider when deciding which air purifier to buy.

The Austin Air it, again, features the Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC) motor from the Austin Air HealthMate Jr. It is good in marketing term, but the performance is not that great at 80 watts.

Running the Austin Air “it” for 8 hours per day will cost about $20 to $30 per year.

Austin Air it Additional Features

The Austin Air family is the first and foundation of the air purifier industry in North America. The company chose to constantly improve the high quality of the air filter over adding any kinds of additional features. It is also the trend of any high-end air purifier that aims at high-quality purification, not flashy features.

There won’t be even the filter replacement indicator or the timer. There is only one manual knob to change the fan speed of this machine.

Our verdict

If you don’t feel like buying the Austin Air HealthMate Jr, now you still need to pay the same amount for a lesser version – the Austin Air “it”. This tabletop air purifier is stylish and compact, with a solid True HEPA filter, but keep in mind you’re paying more for the brand and design than for performance.
